The Queue: Finding treasure where there's no treasure to be found

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft.
Another day, another Queue. Forgive the awful quality of the screenshot above, I tried to show off Malygos' righteous beard but the guy doesn't sit still, even if you ask him nicely. He's a crabby son of a lich sometimes. Well, let's forget about him and dig into today's questions. As always, if you have a question for The Queue, leave it in the comments section below and we'll get to it in a future edition.

As a mage, my main weapon is almost always a Staff with some good stats to it. Since Wrath of the Lich King has come out I have read several places that there are now some really well speced staffs that are "Bind to Account", such as the Dignified Headmaster's Charge and the Grand Staff of Jordan. I understand that their stats scale with level, but how does one go about aquiering these new "BtA" items?

There are a couple of different ways to acquire Bind to Account (or 'Heirloom') items. The Grand Staff of Jordan is a slightly PvP-tilted staff you get via Stone Keeper's Shards. The Dignified Headmaster's Charge is pure PvE and is acquired via Emblems of Heroism. Keep an eye on the site today or tomorrow, and we'll have many more details on how, exactly, you get these items.

A quick question for you all. What has happened to the random chests that always used to randomly pop up? I have been in 5 different zones now and have not seen one treasure chest. I used to think that my dwarven racial talent was profitable but not anymore. Am I just missing them?
Yeah, as some other readers mentioned, chests are largely extinct. They were too easy to cheese, so they couldn't put awesome, worthwhile stuff in them. Without cool stuff in them, they were sort of pointless. I think other old school players will agree with me when I say the chests in the Plaguelands were the dumbest crap in the world. You would clear 6-7 undead to get at one and you'd get four silver, some heavy leather, and level 30 mana potions.
In places where chests were worthwhile, players would just set up a circuit to farm them specifically. Way back, my home server had a gold farmer with the name Magicbox. He would run laps around Winterspring just to loot chests, and vendor/auction the contents. It was... bizarre. As another interesting anecdote, Magicbox's player was actually kind of nice. I don't like saying it because he was a freaking gold farmer, they're supposed to be a blight and all, but he'd actually stop, ni hao it up, and help you out with a quest or two as long as you let him have the nearby chest(s). It was interesting, seeing a friendly gold farmer and not some supreme cutthroat you-or-me kind of guy, though that' wholly irrelevant to your question.
They've taken the emphasis off of chests, and more on rare spawns. You can get some seriously cool stuff off of rare mobs these days, including mounts. As for your racial, one of my guildies was yapping the other day about it showing quest items on your minimap. If it shows quest items, it should still be useful for that. I'm not sure if it does or not though, I don't play Dwarves, they smell. Maybe some of our readers can confirm or deny that? What's the word, guys?
Stave asked...
What helm is that that's being worn in the picture?
The picture I used for yesterday's edition of The Queue is actually an NPC in Storm Peaks. To keep the explanation short, it's an icy lookin' version of the vrykul. You'll learn about them as a quest. You can find similar items in the game (most of the blue helms have horns of some sort) but that particular helm is baked onto the NPC.
nisticus asked...
What do you guys feel about the level 80 DK population issue?
I haven't noticed an abnormal number level 80 Death Knights compared to other classes. They're just new, so you might notice them more. I could be wrong too, I haven't looked at any recent population numbers, but I honestly haven't noticed a massive influx of them. There are a ton of low level ones, but most of them don't go all the way to 80. I don't really see it as a problem either way. If people are having fun playing them, that's fantastic. Especially if they know how to tank when needed and aren't a bunch of brainless, one-armed marmosets when you put them in the lead.
Llothtank asked...
Are you guys going to do any more "well fed buff" columns? I'm sure I'm not the only one who plays WoW who loves to cook, and those recipes were always easy and tasty. Would love to see more specially with all the new recipes in Wrath.
We don't do them as a weekly thing anymore, but I'm sure you'll see it if something comes to us. Their frequency is dependant on a member of our staff feeling both hungry and creative at the same time, and generally the former overpowers the latter. I could take a picture of my ramen that's on the stove right now and label it Northern Stew, but that's not very interesting. I'm pretty hungry, though. I wonder if it's done yet...

I've tried Find Treasure a couple of times for various quests; no luck.
I know it used to work in BC, for things such as Zepplin Parts and Ravager Eggs, but I haven't found anything in WotLK that shows up.
Isabella Nov 24th 2008 11:53AM
Likewise. There are a few I tried to Track Treasure on which could be trackable with something else (eg, crystalsong carrots for the cooking daily with herbalism?) but I have yet to find a quest in northrend which tracks with the dwarven racial. Not even the chest containing crystals for the Oracles daily shows up. Granted, I blazed my way to 80 so it may be lost in a sleep-deprived haze.
havitech Nov 24th 2008 12:50PM
This is slightly related: Track herbs doesn't work for every quest with items that are definitely flowers or herbs. It seems completely random which ones it works for and which ones it doesn't. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an oversight on Blizzard's part.

They were not in the Burning Crusade expansion for quite some time either. After a patch, they randomly started appearing again. What I think is happening is that they are waiting for an appropriate amount of folks to get to the level cap so that they won't be constantly farmed for case.
Runic Healing Pots = $$$ on my server at the moment.
When the prices start to drop, then they can implement them again so that they don't throw the economy out of whack prematurely.
Goorguy Nov 24th 2008 5:27PM
Why is it that tanks are always the group leaders? Why are we always expected to mark mobs? Every time I get in a group to tank for it I will always get thrown the leader. I don't really mind, but at least once I want to get in a group where someone else was willing to mark for me, instead of the other way around.
saxamaphone Nov 25th 2008 7:47AM
Usually tanks like to choose their targets, I know I do.
patiencerose7 Nov 24th 2008 11:11AM
When was it that group buffs dropped as soon as the group? I rather liked doing some morning dailies with an extra buff or two. Or even in the case of a dungeon, if we get adds that kill me (the priest), prayer of fortitude fades from the rest of the group. Is the a bug or a nasty change?
Gnosh Nov 24th 2008 11:35AM
Not that I've noticed. I walked out of the Nexus the other day and quests for half an hour with GotW (I'm a hunter).

If you mean when did group buffs disappear when you're no longer grouped, I think it depends on the buff. Fortitude, the spirit buff, and certain other buffs remain intact... At some point during BC, since I play one, I know they changed the Paladin greater blessing buffs so as soon as you disband, the buff goes away. Not sure what other buffs were affected. Seems to be the buffs that you can only cast on someone when grouped with them.
Mister K Nov 24th 2008 12:44PM
Regular buffs will last but if you get the improved buff in a group you will lose blessings, Fortitude, and Gift of the wild, Divine spirit stays but I'm not sure if thats intended or a bug.
Brad Nov 24th 2008 1:40PM
The group buffs have been fading for a while, but I've noticed it happening a little differently. When you ungroup, if the buff has a duration that is shorter than the single buffs, it will stay with you. I.e. if you have arcane brilliance, but the buff duration has dropped to below 30 mins, then you keep the buff when you ungroup because a single buff can last its duration. This also happens with pally buffs, but people are less aware of it because of the reduced duration to begin with. If you have a greater blessing on, but it has less than 10 mins when you upgroup, then you'll be able to keep it.

What's with the cooking daily quest? It seems to give out cooking currency, but I can't spend the currency in a useful way until I hit 400 cooking.
Should I level my cooking to 400 on [Feast]?
Greg Nov 24th 2008 11:22AM
You can level to 400 on the green recipes, I believe.
VSUReaper Nov 24th 2008 11:24AM
I'm attempting to hit 400 on feasts. I tried the greens first and it was taking a ridiculous amount of meat to lvl off of the green recipes.
Arcaria Nov 24th 2008 12:35PM
There are a ton of things to level cooking to 400 on but you'll need to make quite a few of them as they do turn green. Keep running the cooking dailies though. The Northern Spices may actually be more important than the actual currency. All the best recipes use them and other than paying 30g each(on my server) at the AH for them, the only way to get them is through the cooking dailies.
nbcaffeine Nov 24th 2008 11:26AM
Feast and many (many!) of the green recipes got me to 400 last night. After that, the purchased recipes give you decent skill ups.
Michael Nov 24th 2008 11:36AM
Fishing. I was 414 cooking by the time I hit 385 fishing in the fjord.
Kara Nov 24th 2008 7:00PM
Okay i have to know. What is with the 4 turtles around rat in the underbelly of dalaron?
VSUReaper Nov 24th 2008 11:37AM
Has anyone been able to compile a list of basic minimums in order to start raiding? I'm looking specifically at tanks and healers.
In TBC, tanks needed a minimum of 12k AC/HP to do lower kara. Healers needed to have a min mana and HP pool (the numbers escape me, but it was around 8k w/fort and 9k mana) and a certain amount of mana regen (depending on class)
Dose anyone know what these new minimums are?
