Wrath 101: Heirloom items and how to get them
Wrath of the Lich King introduced not only new content, but an entirely new type of item. These items are called Heirloom items, or Bind to Account (BoA) items. They aren't tied to any one character and can be freely passed from alt to alt, but they're all tied to one account, the account that bought the item. No handing them over to your friends, no mailing them to other players, no mailing them to your second account. So far none of these items are drops, but rewards for more veteran players of the Wrath content. There are two different ways of earning these items, but they dovetail nicely.Quite simply, you need to participate in Wrath's content. Items suited to PvE are acquired via Emblems of Heroism, and items suited for PvP are acquired via Stone Keeper's Shards.
Emblems of Heroism
Emblems of Heroism are one of the Badge of Justice equivalents in Wrath of the Lich King. They're acquired through beating Heroic bosses and 10-man raids. 25-man raids award Emblems of Valor, which are not used for any Heirloom items currently.
Unless you're a chronic altaholic, you may want to hold off on buying these Heirloom items, because there's also a wide variety of epic gear you can buy with it that's Bind on Pickup, not only the Heirloom items. Again, these are the Badge of Justice equivalents. Think of the Heirloom items like the epic gems or Nether Vortices from The Burning Crusade. If you want to gear up your main, these items are going to be things you buy after you have nothing else left to buy. If you spend most of your time leveling up alts, these items may be very good for you to buy right away.
These items are purchased from various vendors around Dalaran, and the items you can buy are the following:
- Champion Herod's Shoulder
- Tattered Dreadmist Mantle
- Stained Shadowcraft Spaulders
- Preened Ironfeather Shoulders
- Polished Spaulders of Valor
- Mystical Pauldrons of Elements
- Venerable Dal'Rend's Sacred Charge
- Dignified Headmaster's Charge
- Devout Aurastone Hammer
- Charmed Ancient Bone Bow
- Bloodied Arcanite Reaper
- Balanced Heartseeker
- Inherited Insignia of the Horde / Alliance
- Discerning Eye of the Beast
- Swift Hand of Justice
The PvP focused heirloom items technically don't require you to PvP at all, but it speeds up the process. When your faction has just won Lake Wintergrasp, your entire faction gains the Essence of Wintergrasp buff. If you're familiar with Spirit Shards from The Burning Crusade, it's more or less the same thing. You loot the Stone Keeper's Shards from bosses in dungeons while you have the faction-wide buff. You'll typically get 2-3 shards per boss, in both normal and heroic versions of the dungeon.
If PvP is more your style, or you just want to speed up the rate at which you're earning these shards, there are daily quests in Lake Wintergrasp that you can do while you're fighting to get your faction the Essence of Wintergrasp buff. Wowhead has a full listing of those quests for both factions if you want to hunt them down.
These items look like they cost a lot of shards, but considering how many of them bosses drop at a time and you can get the Shards from quests, it's not all that bad. When you have enough Shards to buy what you want, head over to Lake Wintergrasp, pray the appropriate vendor is up, and make your purchases. The following Heirloom items are available through Stone Keeper's Shards:
- Battleworn Thrash Blade
- Grand Staff of Jordan
- Upgraded Dwarven Hand Cannon
- The Blessed Hammer of Grace
- Sharpened Scarlet Kris
- Reforged Truesilver Champion
- Strengthened Stockade Pauldrons
- Prized Beastmaster's Mantle
- Pristine Lightforge Spaulders
- Lasting Feralheart Spaulders
- Exquisite Sunderseer Mantle
- Exceptional Stormshroud Shoulders
- Aged Pauldrons of The Five Thunders
- Inherited Insignia of the Alliance / Horde
- Wintergrasp Commendation
So that's how you get Heirloom items! You may want to pay special attention to the Shoulder armor, because that's probably one of the first Bind to Account pieces you'll want to buy. A passive +10% XP bonus for your alts? Yeah, that's friggin' sweet.

does the 10% xp stack with RaF?
Liitz Nov 24th 2008 3:12PM
Anyone know if you can transfer them to characters on other servers?...I'm guessing no. How about Alliance to Horde?
Sven Van Herck Nov 24th 2008 3:17PM
As you cant sell these over the auction house, I see no way of trading them between horde and alliance toons.
Snake Doc Nov 25th 2008 10:51AM
Assuming that because you cannot email Horde to Alliance or vice versa, I would imagine it is also faction specific.
aw232 Nov 24th 2008 3:27PM
Are these like BOP or BOE items where once one of your characters equip the item it's soulbound to that character? or can you buy a single shoulder item and then pass it around all your alts?
rogue Nov 24th 2008 3:34PM
No, it's not bound to the character, it's bound to the account. So you can mail it to any character on your account (on that server, same faction).
holyground Nov 24th 2008 3:26PM
Here's a question or two for you:
Does xfering a toon to a seperate account take work? I have 2 accounts and sometimes I switch characters to help leveling. If I xfered a character with a heirloom, would the 'loom go with it?
Also, you can't mail things cross server, right?
thehorn Nov 24th 2008 3:28PM
Is there a way to see what the stats are for a particular level besides equipping the item?
roguedubb Nov 24th 2008 4:38PM
The only way I have found to view the stats for different levels is to link them to a character at that level range. Hopefully someone will put up some data on wowhead...

Does the level requirement still apply for plate and mail items?
For example can I equip the plate shoulders on my lvl 30 Paladin or must I wait until lvl 40 when he is allowed to wear plate?
If the level requirement still applies does this not severely hinder Paladins, Warriors, Shamans and Hunters who will only be able to choose to buy armor heirloom items for the first or second half of the leveling experience?
SaintStryfe Nov 24th 2008 3:41PM
Items like that are leather (for hunters and shaman) or mail (for warriors and pallies) before level 40, and 40 and after become mail or plate.
Brady Nov 24th 2008 3:42PM
If the item is plate when you buy it, it will change to mail on a character that is less than 40.
oldwisemonk Nov 24th 2008 3:43PM
Was wondering this very thing.
Hua Nov 24th 2008 3:42PM
When I mail a Binds to account item to an alt, does the character who bought it lose it?
oldwisemonk Nov 24th 2008 3:46PM
Yes, until you mail it back to them. Only one of your characters can have it at a time, but you can mail it back and forth indefinitely. Even if one of your toons has already equipped it, he/she will be able to remove it and mail it to one of your other toons and they will be able to equip it when they get it (provided it is the right TYPE of armor - cloth, leather, etc).
Phil Nov 24th 2008 3:48PM
... Yes. You are mailing it, not copying it.
Izodius Nov 24th 2008 3:46PM
In response to Holyground's question... I can vouch at least for Bind on Account pets / etc (such as the CE pets), characters can be Xfered from one account to another with a BoA item, and it will bind to the new account. As such I now have 2 CE accounts even though one is 'unoffical.' I would assume the mechanic would be the same here, as there is no reason to think otherwise.
Fen Nov 25th 2008 10:00AM
what do you mean by "unofficial?"
hold up Nov 24th 2008 3:49PM
I couldnt see why the armor restriction wouldnt apply to your class like normal. You'll probably have to either wear mail longer or buy the plate and wait till 40.
Personally, I'm buying a cloth one that I can transfer to all my alts. Gear isnt really that important till endgame or when you want to twink. I'd just be using it for the +10% xp.
Izodius Nov 24th 2008 3:50PM
RE: wiseoldmonk
Yes when you mail the item the character who bought it "loses" it, think of it as mailing a BoE item that remains BoE (for your toons) even after equip.
RE: ctmackenn
It is unlikely that the XP bonus stacks with RAF as nothing stacks with RAF, not rested, not group bonuses, not zone-wide buff bonuses. Blizzard seems to have made it clear that 3x XP is quiet enough.
