Tanks are also generally the leaders because they need the ability to set marks to determine which mobs will be CCed, which order they will be killed in and such, and that is something only a group leader can do according to the coding.

Actually this seems to be some behavior that cropped up around mid to late BC. Usually in vanilla WoW or early BC I was group lead and marked on my Rogue. One of the advantages was I had good stealth, and in dungeons we hadn't been in I could see if there were mobs/pulls we couldn't see around corners, and if there were long-range pats. I ran Sethekk halls so many times for my Assassination shoulders I had the pulls down to a science... and every so often people would ask to pull with no marks just to make things interesting.
