You kill the guy behind the blight only after a massive struggle, which presumably beats up you and many of your allies, and then the instant you hear an orc (I doubt humans are that adept at telling orc voices apart, honestly) yelling in the ruins, you go storming off in presumption that it's Thrall and you'll be able to kill him.
People are making the argument for the fourth wall, here, but it has to carry both ways. Sure, Varian doesn't know Thrall's end of the story, but how did he know it was Thrall yelling and not just Random Orc NPC? And why on earth would a king lead his forces to an unnecessary battle when they hadn't even recovered from the one they'd just fought?
Besides being shortsighted and stubborn, and valuing his own goals over those of his people, I mean.
