Elemental Shaman changes in patch 3.0.4

We are making some upcoming changes to the Elemental shaman tree. Our goal was to streamline a few of the utility-based talents while giving shamans a little more damage scaling in later tiers of gear.
1) Unrelenting Storm – reduced from 5 points to 3 points. Bonus is 4/8/12% of your Intellect returned as mana.
Can't complain here: three points gets you more than five used to, up from 10%.
2) Elemental Warding – now reduces all damage (not just Nature, Fire and Frost) taken by 2/4/6%
3) Elemental Shields – this talent has been removed, since its effects were combined with Elemental Warding.
This is a buff. While 3 points used to get you 10% damage reduction from those three schools, it now gives you 6% against everything, be it holy, physical or what have you. While I expect some shamans will miss that 4% damage reduction from, say, fire AoE splash damage, not many will complain about getting some more reduction against daggers. Folding Elemental Shields into Elemental Warding means we save three points, even if you're not thrilled with the reduction in how much damage it reduces.
4) Storm, Earth and Fire – reduced from 5 points to 3 points, but keeps around the same net benefit. In addition to current effects, also increases Wind Shock range. The damage bonus to Flame Shock has increased to 60% at 3 ranks. Storm, Earth and Fire has been moved up the tree as well.
Entirely positive. A buff and nothing but a buff.
5) Shamanism – this is a new 5 point talent in the old Storm, Earth and Fire position. Your Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst gain an additional percentage of your bonus damage. We have not finalized the numbers, but it will probably be something like 10% for Lightning Bolt and 20% for Lava Burst at max ranks.
Once they finalize the numbers we'll know if this is a large buff or a small buff, but it's definitely a buff.
These changes will be available in the next minor content patch, and are in addition to the AE changes mentioned previously.
I'm still not entirely thrilled with having to lose Totem of Wrath in order to do any significant AoE, but these changes are almost indisputably nothing but buffs to the spec. I'm a little surprised to be honest. Here's looking forward to patch 3.0.4 and what it brings to elemental shamans.

woot! I'm not a shaman, but I'm glad they are doing this, because I was thinking shammies needed some love.
Jeff Nov 26th 2008 3:11PM
Speaking as a Shammy, we've been getting so much love since 3.0, that it almost makes me nervous. I'm running around Northrend constantly on the lookout for the shadow of the Other Shoe dropping.
But damn if I'm not loving every second of it in the meantime.
Kildon Nov 26th 2008 3:22PM
Jeff.. dude.. i couldn't agree more. I'm enhancement and absolutely LOVING the changes since 3.0 and now that I'm 80 it feels way to good to be true. I keep waiting for that day I check the forums and all the trolls are talking about OP Shaman and how we need the nerf boot.......
GOD I HOPE NOT
Malkeior Nov 26th 2008 3:58PM
As a Ret Paladin, I hope that never happens to my shaman brethren.
Robert Nov 26th 2008 3:31PM
For months in LK beta the shaman forum was full of posts on shaman needing AOE and scaling DPS talents. This should of been implemented at launch.

wowinsider, where do you get all your TCG art?
Saikano Nov 26th 2008 3:50PM
Im anxious to see how this change works in raiding with my ele shammy... I have followed lots of topics in regards to their scaling so I hope this helps level the playing field some.
ps.. the AoE changes are a joke.. im looking forward to seeing the #s on how much the totems are buffed. I seriously doubt it will outweigh the use of ToW in a 10/25 man raiding enviornment.
anyhow.. ill keep lookin for more changes!
Verit Nov 26th 2008 3:59PM
Well the agro change is sure welcome - usually when I drop those totems on aoe pulls the mobs eat the totem so I've never put any points into it.
Robert M Nov 26th 2008 3:52PM
Great new!
Rossi, are the shamans (and druids *hinh hint the rest of wowinsider*) going to get a gear breakdown of early quest rewards on where to get some gear. It seems so much of the mail is intended for enhancement or hunters and the leather leans much more to rogues and ferals. It would be nice to get an idea where to gear up your caster hybrids if you didnt happen to enter Northrend in all epics.

"I'm still not entirely thrilled with having to lose Totem of Wrath in order to do any significant AoE, but these changes are almost indisputably nothing but buffs to the spec."
How do you figure that you'll lose ToW? Seems to me that it should fit just fine.
Vahnya Nov 26th 2008 4:33PM
Magma Totem and Totem of Wrath are both fire totems. If we are forced to drop Magma Totem to AoE, we can not also drop ToW, which is our 41 point talented totem, as you can only have 1 totem of each element down at one time. Therefore they don't "fit just fine". Negating a totem we have to spec into just to have an AoE that effectively lowers our everyone in the raid's overall damage, and our damage more because of travel time, is not a buff. It is a buff to enhance and resto shaman, however, those aren't the specs they were trying to help with this AoE as they have previously mentioned they wanted to give *elemental* an AoE. As it stands now this will be rarely used by elemental shaman, and likely only in a 5 man dungeon environment.
Anyhow, hooray for the good changes that are a little late in coming but still very much appreciated. Perhaps elemental shaman wont be sandwiched between the tanks in DPS anymore.

WTB PVP SURVIVABILITY TALENTS.
But this is still very nice. :D
Rasman Nov 26th 2008 6:31PM
I feel you on that one, I have so many issues with not doing well in PvP as Enhancement and I really don't want to turn Elemental or Resto just so I can get at an enemy at range...I haven't gotten to play around with Hex yet though, not at 80 so far. But it can't really help that much, can it? Maybe it's because my Feral Spirit's aren't scaling like they should. Pre-Wrath, I used to be able to make Rogues cry because they couldn't touch me Solo because of Feral Spirit, but now, they just eat though me and it's like my two favorite pets don't matter.
Cremean Nov 26th 2008 4:25PM
Oh sure, the buff the hell out of Shamans AFTER I promise not to play until the new year rolls around. *Grumble* *Grumble*
Khirzask Nov 26th 2008 4:27PM
Hell... it's about time.
Here's to hoping this will solve our scaling issues!
Daniel Nov 26th 2008 4:39PM
Go Go ToW!...oh wait i cant use fire now... :(
I've always held an interest in elemental, but nvr felt confident in respecing from enhance till 3.0... it just keeps getting better...finally
Wat they really need to do is make Elemental a true hybrid caster like they've now made Enhance ...
Add an additional talent that changes ToW to a neutral totem or to watever totem isnt currently out [if have fire, water, and earth out, it would be wind, etc]
and after that synergize water shield and lightning shield so Elemental can have both active at once... that would make elemetal a force to be reckoned with.
I geuss ill just keep dreamin
wtbxp Nov 26th 2008 4:39PM
wtb xp and loot off the mobs my totems aoe down.

@Vahnya
As a raiding Elemental Shaman, I know how totems work. What I don't understand is why people think that ToW will become useless. I can't think of a BOSS situation in which Magma Totem > Totem of Wrath. You have to remember that ToW doesn't only increase your personal DPS, but the DPS/HPS of every single caster in the raid.
Yes, in AoE heavy situations, Magma Totem will be really nice, but I don't think you ever have to choose between one or the other (the other being ToW). I don't know about your raid groups, but at least in Naxx there aren't many situations where I have to re-drop Magma repeatedly. Also, with the decreased cooldown of CL, I can pump out some pretty solid AoE damage.
Lastly, to quote another blue post speaking more specifically on Magma Totem:
"But the change to Magma Totem in particular is substantial. The base points went from 170 to 370 and the coefficient from 0.67 to 1.0. In our tests, the pulses were doing something like 600 damage. You would be hard-pressed to get that kind of increase out of Totem of Wrath, even considering its benefit to the whole raid.
Yes you have to run up, but we don't think that is too much to ask considering you can still Chain Lightning or whatever while the totem does its thing.
Totems are a core piece of the shaman design. We want to make them work, not remove them from the game."
Yeah, TLDR but whatever.

"Once they finalize the numbers we'll know if this is a large buff or a small buff, but it's definitely a buff."
Don't downplay this change so much. A scaling talent for 2 of our main rotation spell is something that most serious raiding Elemental Shaman have been asking for since WoTLK first went into beta.
Right now none of our talents scale with gear/spell power, so this is a tremendous boon for us. Your post makes it sound like its not that big of a deal, when it really is.
