Five old world vanity pets you may have missed
It's a good time to be a pet collector. We're getting recognition, cool toys for our pets, and even an achievement series especially for us. If you're new to the world of pet collecting, or have just dabbled in it so far though, you may be struggling a bit to get those last few pets for the achievement. In the spirit of helping out my fellow pet enthusiasts, here's a few rarer or lesser known old world pets that you might have overlooked, especially if you started the game after Burning Crusade.5. and 4. Worg Pup and Smolderweb Hatchling -- You'll get these from quests given by Kibler, a goblin by the Horde flight point in Burning Steppes (He's neutral though, so Alliance can get these quests too). Both quests will send you into Lower Blackrock Spire to catch the pets yourself. You can actually drop off a couple ledges down to the bottom of the instance, and climb back up through some spiders to Halycon's den, giving you a perfect opportunity to grab both a spiderling and worg pup for the quest.
3. Mechanical Chicken -- This one is missed by a lot of people simply because it requires a few drops and a few annoying escort quests: Namely, you must complete the quests from Distress Beacons in Hinterlands, Tanaris, and Feralas. Once you do that, Oglethorp Ognosticus will provide you with An OOX of your own. Sure, it's a smaller one with no combat capabilities, but hey, nothing's perfect. The pain with this quest will probably be remembering which distress beacons you already grabbed while you were leveling up. The other thing about this quest is that the pet is bind on equip, so if you're lucky, you may just be able to grab it off the auction house.
2. Disgusting Oozeling -- This little guy comes from an Oozing Bag, which is a very rare random drop from just about any level 50 or higher slime-type monster in the old world. You'll probably want to just head to Felwood, Ungoro or Eastern Plaguelands and start slaughtering slimes. This one will take a while, especially since the Oozing Bag doesn't even always contain the pet, but when you do get it, he's at least a pretty unique little guy. He actually gives you an aura while he's out and drinks Dark Iron Ale.
1. Chicken -- If you're the type of person who thinks that making weird faces at animals is the height of comedy, this is the quest for you. To get this one, you'll need to head to Saldean's farm in Westfall and spam the /chicken emote at a chicken. Whether you finally learn proper chicken-speak or the chicken just gets annoyed at you is unknown, but eventually, the chicken will offer you a quest. When you buy some Special Chicken Feed from Farmer Saldean and feed it to the chicken, it will lay an egg, which you can then loot for your pet.
Now, as you might imagine, this quest is difficult for the Horde to do since they can't buy the feed (Plus, it looks like the Horde can no longer get the quest at all, according to some), but there is a solution. If you're on a PvE server (or know someone who can make alliance characters on your PvP server), you can have a friend (or your second account) create an Alliance character (even a level 1 can get the quest) and run it out to Saldean's farm. They can do the quest, and when the egg appears on the ground, you can loot it to grab the egg for yourself. You might even risk making the character yourself. If you logged your horde character out at the farm and log back on quickly enough, the egg may still be there.

I myself took my level 1 human paladin (Egglayer) to westfall. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting enough money from the lowbie quests.
Did the quest, gave the chicken the feed. Logged out and back in to my horde main who I had previously left in westfall and got me my egg.

I did the same; however, being a PvP server, I couldn't create an Alliance character directly, but had to start a new 10-day trial account first. Worked great, other than having to fight my way across Duskwood and Elwynn Forest. (I did this just before patch 3.01, so EVERY level 70 herbalist was picking low-level herb for the incipient Inscription power-levelers.)
My FIRST Attempt was to stand around the farmer with the chicken feed, and /point to lowbie Alliance, /point to the chickens and /point to me, hoping someone who knew what was up would be kind enough to get the chicken to lay the egg for me, but mostly the lowbies acted puzzled and then ran away.
After all that, my Westfall Chicken is easily my favorite. Much more fun than farming Sporregar rep...

I did this a while back, and yeah, being a PvP server had to create a trial account and dual boxed it for a bit.
wasn't too hard getting there, infact i sat around with some lowbies for a while after i did it in elwyn forest.
being on a horde character and a trial account meant i couldn't speak to them unless they added me as a friend, which was frustrating but hilarious too.

Also keep your eye out on the cross-faction AH for pets you cannot buy for your faction, for example:
Cat Carrier (White Kitten) Stormwind City, Rare Vendor - Alliance
Prairie Dog Whistle ( Thunder Bluff ) - Horde

Cool list, I had forgotten about those damn beacons and the chicken. Thanks!
Oh, you could also add the Sprite Darter Hatchling from Feralas. http://thottbot.com/s15067

That's definitely a good one, Shawn. I was strongly tempted to put it on the list, but I wanted to keep myself to 5 pets to start out with and wanted to stick to pets that both factions can pick up.

wow, i got all those already. the mech. chicken had to ask a GM to restore since i somehow threw it away.
Zummers Nov 29th 2008 12:56PM
Don't forget about the Sprite Darter Hatchling. It's an ally only quest that involves a fair bit of running around, and used to be really hard to find. Now that question marks show up on the minimap it's not as tough, but it's still one of the rarer of the easy pets.
BTW, if anyone's interested in pet collecting, WarcraftPets.com is the best resource.

I play on the Horde side of a PvP server, so what I did to get the chicken was to use a trial account to create a human, and then dual boxed my way to a chicken.
Alexisonfire Nov 29th 2008 1:52PM
Clever. Quite Clever.
I'll have to keep that in mind.
Maleven Nov 29th 2008 2:31PM
I did that too. Now if only that damned Emerald Whelp dropped, i would only be missing the engineering bop's and the alliance exclusive like the darter.
Mainstay Nov 29th 2008 2:41PM
You forgot the Faerie Dragon from the Feralas quest line, though I think thats Alliance only.

You can also get a chicken from a vendor at the racetrack in Thousand Needles. Don't know if this is different than the Westfall quest reward but probably not.
If you're Alliance, do a quick search for the Lil' Timmy when in Stormwind. On my server, the white kitten sells consistently for 200g at the neutral AH, and around 100g at the faction AH. So this is a really easy way to build up some money when you're lower level.
SlimPickens42 Nov 29th 2008 4:12PM
The Thousand Needles Chicken is different that the one from Wesftfall.

The chicken you can buy is the Ancona Chicken. Same model as Westfall Chicken but gray in color. The Westfall Chicken wouldn't really be any big deal if you could just buy it instead of doing the quest. Especially for Horde characters.

Wow, that is cheep, I just sold the White Kitten on the Neutral AH on my server for 800g.

if i threw away my worg pup years ago, is there a vendor i can get it back from? How would I go about getting it back?
LostOne Nov 29th 2008 5:09PM
Talk to a stable master in a capital city. After the 3.0.2 patch they were giving back pets from completed quests that people had previously deleted. So that people wouldn't be screwed out of getting the Shop Smart, Shop Pet Smart achievement.
Ichigo Nov 29th 2008 5:18PM
Try going to a stable master and seeing if you can get it back through that NPC.
If that's a no go, then you'll have to send in a ticket for an item restoration. Just remember that you only get a select, undetermined number of restorations per account.
Good luck either way.

For the slime pet, The Ongar (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=14345) drops the ooze bag at a 16% drop rate...
