The Queue: Can't get enough sockets

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft.
Just a few questions today, because slow weekends are slow. Who wants to ask questions when you can be playing? Certainly not me. I will still answer questions, however. Let's jump right in with ender's question...

What, in your own opinion, is the easiest faction to start to grind on for rep as a new level 80? I know there is the "championing" but with dailies etc, what seems to be the easiest?
The first one you do is the easiest. Why? Because you're not sick of running any of the Heroics yet, so it's all fair game, heh. After that you lose a little drive. In all seriousness, the Ebon Blade seems the easiest so far. Not only do they have multiple massive quest chains in Icecrown, they also have 3 dailies you do in one little area, and the tabard you can wear in Heroics. If I tossed on my Ebon Blade tabard right after hitting Exalted with Wyrmrest, I think I'd be Ebon Blade exalted by now, too. I put on an Argent Crusade tabard instead and I'm only sitting in early Revered with them.
Your experiences may vary and I'm willing to bet our readers will have other opinions, and that's totally fine. Heck, I think they should toss in their thoughts, too. It might help you pick and choose a little more, you know? Multiple opinions is great. I definitely think it's the Ebon Blade, though.
Gartifarh asked...
One thing that always annoys me about helping out freinds level up in Northrend has been them on their 100% ground mounts or 60% flyers. To make this easier, are there any multi-passenger flying mounts? Or any plans to bring them in?
I'm sure we'll see these in the future but there aren't any now as far as we know there are no plans to have them yet. A day or two ago someone asked about the aerial siege vehicles that were in Wintergrasp in beta, and this dovetails into that a little bit. They were there in beta, and one of them held more than one person. For some reason they disappeared, and I don't think we know whether that was for technical reasons or for balance reasons. They didn't like normal flight in Wintergrasp, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just wanted to keep the battle grounded. Either way, they've tried to do it, and whether it was a success or not we're not sure, but we know they've at least worked on it. It would not shock me to see an obscenely expensive multi-passenger flying mount one day.
When that day is? No idea.
Damatastre asked...
I just got my blacksmithing to 400 and learned the socket bracers and socket gloves recipes. I was curious to find out if there are any other available socketing recipes, so I searched wowwiki and came up with a socket for a one handed weapon. Unfortunately, there was no additional information on it. Is this recipe available for Blacksmiths to do? If so, do you have any idea where to find it?
Blacksmiths get to add sockets to their own bracers and gloves. They also get to create Belt Buckles to sell to others, to add a socket to belts. The Socket One-Handed Weapon never made it into the game in a way that could be used, it was just seen in the game files. I'm not sure whether it even made it into beta or not, but I don't think it did. I think they decided not to use that one and go with bracers/gloves instead, because all of the profession-unique 'enchants' overwrite real enchantments from enchanting. Would you really pass up something like Mongoose as a tank/melee for one more gem? In some cases sure, but most of the time you would just laugh at that and go get the real enchant instead of some +stamina gem.
Bracers/Gloves you're pretty assuredly gonna go for the gem, since its a clear +stat upgrade over an enchantment. Weapons are a little more varied and unique. You can't get something like Mongoose in a gem unless it's a metagem, and being able to socket multiple metagems would be absurd considering how good some of them are.

that's not true. Blacksmithing-Sockets don't overwrite Enchantments or the other way round. I have both on my Bracers just fine.
Alex Ziebart Nov 30th 2008 2:41PM
Interesting, I'd heard the exact opposite! I think Blacksmiths are the only ones with a profession unique 'enchant' that doesn't overwrite real ones, then. Leatherworking and Tailoring do, at the very least.
Bootsanator Nov 30th 2008 3:45PM
Yep, I as a tailor am quite jealous. I wish my cloak embroidery didn't overwrite my enchanting enchant. :(

I was very excited when I learned that I could socket my gloves and have Armsman enchanted to them.
I no longer wistfully look at engineering goggles and curse blacksmithing, since I know I can compensate with two extra sockets. :)

I've got another question about sockets. I remember that we had lots of socketed quest rewards in Outlands. But I've completed three zones in Northrend and seen only few of these. Does it change in mid-70 zones or do we have to wait until we get our hands on gear from heroics?
Thander Nov 30th 2008 2:31PM
People complained about sockets on leveling gear because the items get replaced so fast. Blizz overall reduced sockets from quest reward items. The raiding sets and new gladiator sets will have all the sockets just like before, and this is when demand for gems will increase. Right now there aren't that many people at 80 getting items with sockets.

In the past I was able to level up my paladin with a lot of instance runs combined with rested XP. It seems like in Northrend that a good dungeon is giving much less XP than before. Is this true or am I just imagining things?
Kellerune Nov 30th 2008 8:09PM
Well, it could be that instances nowadays take about 30 minutes to an hour when they USED to take almost one or 2. Same exp for half the time? Bad idea.
Brent Nov 30th 2008 2:39PM
Yeah Rondrer is right. Adding sockets to gear does not take up the enchant spot. I have sockets on bracers and gloves + enchants.
Antistes Nov 30th 2008 3:25PM
this is affirmed by comments on wowhead too.
I guess an edit of the article would be in order, since the main argument against 1-h weapon sockets is faulty.

I started a Death Knight on a RP realm and wanted it to still serve the Lich king. So I was wondering what would happen if I never turn in the quest to talk to Thrall. Will the DK be allowed to accept quests elsewhere or is he doomed to grind mobs to 80? (unless he turns in the quest)
Lukar Nov 30th 2008 3:49PM
You will be forever silenced. No, not kidding. At least that's how it went in the Betas. We all were getting summoned out of Archeus because the final quest to kill Patchwerk was bugged, and we couldn't do anything after that.
Ade Nov 30th 2008 2:54PM
There are 6 Ebon Blade dailies -- three at the Shadow Vault, and another three against Onslaught Harbour.
Kalerender Nov 30th 2008 5:54PM
The death knight on your factions flying ship has a few dailies as well, I'm not sure which rep they give however.
Zaltais Dec 1st 2008 7:28AM
The dailies from Koltira Deathweaver on the Horde ship gives no rep one way or the other, so I assume the Alliance one don't either.
Kaeb Dec 1st 2008 11:42AM
Thassarian on the Stormbreaker gives Ebon Blade rep for the initial completion of the quest (the non daily). The daily version (e.g. That's Abominable!, my personal favorite) gives Alliance Vanguard Rep for completion of his dailies.

I'm surprised you're only early in Revered with Argent Crusade... I did almost all their quests in Zul'Drak and I'm just moving into Icecrown now also just into Revered. Did you not quest in Zul'Drak I suppose?
Alex Ziebart Nov 30th 2008 3:05PM
I definitely did Zul'Drak, it's one of my favorite zones. I've wiped our Icecrown as well. I'm only 5,400 rep through Revered, and I've worn the tabard into a few Heroics.

I don't know for certain, but I can offer my opinion on the removal of aircraft in Wintergrasp: they were unbelievably one-sided.
The problem was that once someone was in an aircraft, they were almost impossible to kill. Aircraft couldn't be attacked by regular attacks; they had to be taken out by either other vehicles or by static turrets. You can pretty much exclude the vehicles since their weapons were utterly useless for the job.
That leaves turrets, but between reload time, lag, and the speed at which aircraft moved, you just could not take them out. I remember one Wintergrasp in beta where the Alliance aircraft just sat above the keep and killed people inside with impunity because they sat just outside of the range of the turrets.
In the end, I suspect that Blizzard just couldn't balance the buggers. Maybe they'll bring them back when they introduce flak cannons. :)

I am not a fast leveler, and am wondering if there are any low traffic spots that are good for leveling? I play on a PVP server, and a lot of Alliance happen to be higher than me, and enjoy beating my Rogueish face in.
