Take it slow. Be sure of what you are pulling and how many, mostely this comes with experience.

I would also be aware of what types of mobs are able to be crowd controled and who can use what type of crowd control.

Be carefull of aoe spells as they can break crowd control and pull more mobs than expected.

Watch for patrols.
