First off, I want to apologize for an error I made yesterday. I didn't research the sockets that Blacksmiths can give only to themselves enough, and due to one-part misinformation, one-part assumption, I said those sockets overwrite enchants from Enchanting. That's actually not true. Leatherworking's fur linings do overwrite enchants. Tailoring's cloak embroidery overwrites enchants. Blacksmithing's sockets do not. Again, I apologize for that. Socket One-Handed Weapon still never made it into the game, though. With that all said, let's get into the questions.

I've got another question about sockets. I remember that we had lots of socketed quest rewards in Outlands. But I've completed three zones in Northrend and seen only few of these. Does it change in mid-70 zones or do we have to wait until we get our hands on gear from Heroics?
You start seeing sockets again once you near level 80, and you see them a lot once you start getting high-end gear again. Unless you can produce the gems yourself, people usually aren't going to bother putting gems in leveling gear, especially green quest rewards. It feels like wasted money since the gear will be replaced very, very quickly.
Once I hit 80 and started running the 10-man raids, I got my hands on plenty of gear with sockets. As soon as I did, I dropped about a thousand gold min-maxing my little heart out with my gems. Jewelcrafters, here's a tip: For the next month or so, raiders are going to be gobbling up +Hit gems. They'll always be in demand, but right now it's at its worst. Everyone wanting to dive straight into raid content has abysmal hit from their level 70 gear deteriorating and leveling gear not having enough to take you straight into raids. +Hit gems are in massive demand for at least another few weeks.
Prot asked...
In the past I was able to level up my Paladin with a lot of instance runs combined with rested XP. It seems like in Northrend that a good dungeon is giving much less XP than before. Is this true or am I just imagining things?
You still get quite a bit of XP from instances, but you're not in them as long as you used to be. Azjol-Nerub certainly doesn't give you as much XP as Blood Furnace did (percentage-wise), but you're not exactly in Azjol-Nerub as long as you were in Furnace, are you? Azjol-Nerub takes you 20-30 minutes, maybe 45 your first time there. Blood Furnace takes longer than that at the appropriate level. It's just a result of needing to kill and clear less crap now than in older dungeons.
Ithaqua asked...
I play a Resto Leatherworking Druid, and skinning is fairly important to me while I level LW and keep my guildies stocked. I recently found one of the best places to farm Nerubian Chitin is phased out in Icecrown if you continue too far along the quest line. Are there other places where this is the case? Should those of certain professions avoid questing in certain areas until they have a good stock of goods?
I think this is a unique situation, and I get the feeling that the fact that these mobs have the highest rate of giving Skinners Nerubian Chitin is specifically because they're a limited time only deal. A 'get while the getting is good' sort of deal. That's just my feeling though, I have nothing to back that up.
There are other places you can get the chitin, those mobs simply had an inflated rate at which they coughed it up. Other spots in Icecrown have Nerubians you can skin, you get hefty amounts of it in Azjol-Nerub/Ahn'kahet, and... Raptors in Zul'Drak give Nerubian Chitin, according to Wowhead? My brain hurts.
Well, anyway, I think this is a unique case. I can't think of any situations where ore or herbs are phased out, and I can't even think of any other situations where important types of leather are phased out. How about you, my lovely readers? Can you think of anymore of these situations so we watch out for them? Most of the other phasing scenarios I can think of just get rid of annoyances or mobs that don't drop anything of worth.
Geamo asked...
What's behind that giant gate to the north of Stormwind Harbor, the one with the giant bar on it?
I think that's just a dockyard/shipyard. It's part of a harbor that's somewhat cut off a little bit, separated from everything else, where they build or repair ships. This is Warcraft though, so behind that door could be Deathwing's summer home that was built by Katrana Prestor's underlings before King Wrynn made his comeback and booted her behind out.

Phasing affects mining in that if you are in a phased zone mining a node and someone else is in the same zone in a different phase the mining node appears to both individuals. Several times I have been standing all by myself in phased area mining a node to have the "item is already in use" error message pop up. The only explanation I can come up with is that the node is being mined by someone else in a different phase.

I'm not sure that's correct, although I don't know for sure. In part of the Sons of Hodir q line I saw someone mining thin air, clearly doing a q that I'd already done and therefore in a different phase. But I could see the player. Of course, some other phases have made players invisible. tough call

Phasing has made a few things in-game difficult. Like meeting people at flight points. They really need to make it so that if you are in a party with someone in a lower phase of an area, you see the lowest common phase.

So, I'm fast approaching lvl 80 and I'm wanting to get my PvP on in the near future. Is it pointless for me to grind out honour for gear at this point because all the s1 and s2 gear is under that of my Northrend greens? Does that mean I gotta start raiding for gear in order to compete in season 5?
Toeroe Dec 2nd 2008 12:31PM
Im not certain about other professions, but as a LW I know I have access to early PvP gear that I can craft.
I was able to start crafting it at 420, and all pieces have Resilience on them. The mats are cheap, and LW'ers looking to skillup will probably even provide the leather if you bring the Eternals. Check with Tailors and Blacksmiths about cloth and plate gear.
No reason to start off the PvP seasons with no resil!

I'm an alchemist and can transmute titanium bars but I have seen that miners can make the same titanium bars from ore they can mine. So if they can mine it, is it worth (by worth i mean it take 10 bars of metal and 2 crystallized life vs. 2 ore) transmuting cause the nodes are hard to find or is it kind of a bust or am I see bad information and miners can't make the bars?
thelopse Dec 1st 2008 6:19PM
Miners can make titanium bar, though the spots are somewhat rare.
But, I thought the transmute was more for the 'may discover other trasmutes' part than the profitable metal creation.
Arbolamante Dec 1st 2008 12:41PM
Is it just me, or do the professions seem unfinished? A handful of transmutes to get alch from the low 400s to 450, and a discovery once a week. Cooking 450? What needs 450 to cook?
Doffencrag Dec 1st 2008 1:02PM
I'm guessing it's to keep the profession-nuts occupied til the next expac. What we have now at release isn't much, but I wouldn't be surprised if they added more in the upcoming patches.

Kudos to Alex Ziebart on owning up to and correcting a simple error! That shows good character and journalistic integrity!
Also, Kudos to him on providing such great material consistently and often! This site wouldn't be what it is without his contributions, and I don't say that lightly.

What happened to the small damage addition that was supposed to be added to Faerie Fire (Feral)? Was it in the beta at all? It would be really useful for "tagging" mobs.
s.alexander.torres@gmail.xo Dec 1st 2008 2:46PM
It's only on Faerie Fire in Dire Bear form.
Balius Dec 1st 2008 4:53PM
Exactly, Bears have it but cats don't. I imagine the thought was that tanks need a way to generate initial threat, and the developers aren't really all that interested in letting druids tag mobs from afar in cat form.
Skar Dec 1st 2008 1:58PM
Speaking of tradeskills, have you heard anything about a Brilliant Glass style design for jewelcrafters? Or am I just going to have to prospect dozens of stacks of ore and keep my fingers crossed for blue-quality gems?

Question:
I'm a holy paladin, and took engineering partly for the fun factor, and partly for the goggles. I'm currently still sporting Justicebringer 2000's, and looked at my trainer for upgrades, but all I could see was a prot and ret version. There are no plate goggles with int/spell power on them. Any idea why there are no holy paladin goggles for engineering?

For the Exploration portion of the achievements, how is a Hordie supposed to explore Darnassus?
Doffencrag Dec 1st 2008 2:33PM
By taking the boat from Auberdine (Darkshore) and riding through the red portal at Rut'theran Village (it doesn't keep Hordies out)... pretty much how Allies go there as well.
Greg Dec 1st 2008 2:40PM
The guards won't kill you once you get there?
Ed (Sindarin, Hydraxis US) Dec 1st 2008 3:20PM
Of course they'll try, but that's the risk of exploring enemy cities. xD
Eisengel Dec 1st 2008 2:37PM
I beg to differ somewhat on the gemming point. Careful application of newer gems in BC quest & reputation greens can have spectacular results.
I was levelling my DK and completed 'Save the Sporeloks!' and got a nice helm:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27715
Circle's Stalwart Helm:
681 armor
+16 Strength
+22 Stamina
1 red
1 yellow
1 blue
bonus: +4 Strength
+15 crit rating
I hit the AH on my main and picked up a:
Perfect Bold Bloodstone: +14 Strength
Smooth Sun Crystal: +12 crit rating
Sovereign Shadow Crystal: +6 Strength, +9 Stamina
so... in total the helm gives me:
+40 Strength
+31 Stamina
+27 crit rating
... and I got that at level 60! I'm now 1 bar away from level 73 on my DK and I'm just starting to see quest reward helms that are almost side-grades. Sure the helm is ugly as sin, but that's why the devs gave us a show/hide helm option. ;^)
