The Queue: Tradeskill bits and pieces

First off, I want to apologize for an error I made yesterday. I didn't research the sockets that Blacksmiths can give only to themselves enough, and due to one-part misinformation, one-part assumption, I said those sockets overwrite enchants from Enchanting. That's actually not true. Leatherworking's fur linings do overwrite enchants. Tailoring's cloak embroidery overwrites enchants. Blacksmithing's sockets do not. Again, I apologize for that. Socket One-Handed Weapon still never made it into the game, though. With that all said, let's get into the questions.

I've got another question about sockets. I remember that we had lots of socketed quest rewards in Outlands. But I've completed three zones in Northrend and seen only few of these. Does it change in mid-70 zones or do we have to wait until we get our hands on gear from Heroics?
You start seeing sockets again once you near level 80, and you see them a lot once you start getting high-end gear again. Unless you can produce the gems yourself, people usually aren't going to bother putting gems in leveling gear, especially green quest rewards. It feels like wasted money since the gear will be replaced very, very quickly.
Once I hit 80 and started running the 10-man raids, I got my hands on plenty of gear with sockets. As soon as I did, I dropped about a thousand gold min-maxing my little heart out with my gems. Jewelcrafters, here's a tip: For the next month or so, raiders are going to be gobbling up +Hit gems. They'll always be in demand, but right now it's at its worst. Everyone wanting to dive straight into raid content has abysmal hit from their level 70 gear deteriorating and leveling gear not having enough to take you straight into raids. +Hit gems are in massive demand for at least another few weeks.
Prot asked...
In the past I was able to level up my Paladin with a lot of instance runs combined with rested XP. It seems like in Northrend that a good dungeon is giving much less XP than before. Is this true or am I just imagining things?
You still get quite a bit of XP from instances, but you're not in them as long as you used to be. Azjol-Nerub certainly doesn't give you as much XP as Blood Furnace did (percentage-wise), but you're not exactly in Azjol-Nerub as long as you were in Furnace, are you? Azjol-Nerub takes you 20-30 minutes, maybe 45 your first time there. Blood Furnace takes longer than that at the appropriate level. It's just a result of needing to kill and clear less crap now than in older dungeons.
Ithaqua asked...
I play a Resto Leatherworking Druid, and skinning is fairly important to me while I level LW and keep my guildies stocked. I recently found one of the best places to farm Nerubian Chitin is phased out in Icecrown if you continue too far along the quest line. Are there other places where this is the case? Should those of certain professions avoid questing in certain areas until they have a good stock of goods?
I think this is a unique situation, and I get the feeling that the fact that these mobs have the highest rate of giving Skinners Nerubian Chitin is specifically because they're a limited time only deal. A 'get while the getting is good' sort of deal. That's just my feeling though, I have nothing to back that up.
There are other places you can get the chitin, those mobs simply had an inflated rate at which they coughed it up. Other spots in Icecrown have Nerubians you can skin, you get hefty amounts of it in Azjol-Nerub/Ahn'kahet, and... Raptors in Zul'Drak give Nerubian Chitin, according to Wowhead? My brain hurts.
Well, anyway, I think this is a unique case. I can't think of any situations where ore or herbs are phased out, and I can't even think of any other situations where important types of leather are phased out. How about you, my lovely readers? Can you think of anymore of these situations so we watch out for them? Most of the other phasing scenarios I can think of just get rid of annoyances or mobs that don't drop anything of worth.
Geamo asked...
What's behind that giant gate to the north of Stormwind Harbor, the one with the giant bar on it?
I think that's just a dockyard/shipyard. It's part of a harbor that's somewhat cut off a little bit, separated from everything else, where they build or repair ships. This is Warcraft though, so behind that door could be Deathwing's summer home that was built by Katrana Prestor's underlings before King Wrynn made his comeback and booted her behind out.

Someone may have covered this already, but as I level through the 60s, is it even worth putting extra effort into acquiring the lower Tier armor sets anymore? Or should I just push through to Northrend with whatever I have?
Trem Dec 1st 2008 3:42PM
If you are DPS or heals I would just push on through to Northrend. I don't think the amount of time you would save on killing just a little bit faster would outweigh the amount of time you would spend getting the tier armor.
However if you're just hitting 68-70 and you want to tank some of the early instances in Northrend I would probably recommend grabbing some of the tanking pieces from BC as there are not a lot of tank items from quest rewards until you hit 77-78 or so.

Hello.
I wonder if you've come across any PLANS for Blacksmiths? I've Altas'd my way through the Reputation Faction rewards, and i've yet to find ANYTHING that means I can make something I didn't learn from a BS Trainer. I see JCing plans, and tailoring patterns and LWing patterns, but nothing for Blacksmiths. Also, I can't create ANYTHING except maces?! No swords, no Axe and why are they Unique? No two 2H Maces for a TG Fury Warrioring Dwarf? /cry

Is it possible to get a cross-faction Hog mount through the neutral AH?
If you "learn the flying carpet mount" and then drop tailoring, can you still use it?
Chamual Dec 1st 2008 7:21PM
I would imagine you can't use the flying carpet if you drop Tailoring, much like you can't use the lolocoptor if you drop engineering......
Physis Dec 1st 2008 8:19PM
You can GET the hog through the neutral AH, but I wouldn't. Notice that it is only usable by certain races. So you would be able to buy the opposing faction's chopper but never learn it.

This isn't quite trade, but it does involve proffession and phasing. If you want the Old Craft achievement and the Diplomat achievement, you can fish in Ogrimmar during the Wrath gate questline when you are sent there to talk to Thrall. Nothing aggros on you in town, and you can basically wonder around all you want... and you can fish all you want without worrying about being ganked. This is, of course, an alliance only thing. My druid got it within a few minutes then went to complete the quest.

MMk, I have a question definitely worthy of the queue ...
I may get mocked for this but I have yet to find a place on the internet with any sort of explanation...
So one of the old fun exploits for WoW was Old Ironforge, an area that you had to exploit any number of bugs to see. When I first heard about this I was sure it was just some cute name for a buggy version of the real Ironforge, maybe an old, buggy test realm that had no NPC's or a distorted color scheme or something else of the like...
But then I youtube'd it out of curiosity recently and it turns out to be the exact opposite... it's a fully developed area! It looks as clean and proper as a wing of Blackrock Depths! There even appears to be different names of locations popping up as the character in the video runs from place to place!
So my question is, why did Old Ironforge even exist if it wasn't supposed to be found by players? It's obvious that they didn't want people to ever see it, as now it doesn't even exist... it's been COMPLETELY REMOVED! What gives, any theories?

Has there been any word about dropping the racial restrictions for mounts? I think it's kind of slanted that Tauren are locked out of 20 mounts for no good reason. We can ride the Battleground Raptor, the Deathcharger, and Kael's Chicken. So I don't understand why we still can't use Darkspear Raptors, Forsaken Horses, and Sin'dorai Hawkstriders.
I want that Albino Drake and I'd rather not spend several thousand gold more than any other race.
Amatilen Dec 1st 2008 9:56PM
I'm approaching level 77 now and I have never owned a flying mount. Should I grab an expert mount and cold weather flying, or should I hold out, save some money, and get an artisan level mount? Is it worth it to pay for the entry level flying mount?
Thander Dec 1st 2008 10:25PM
You should get the cheap flying mount and cold weather flying training. The main reason being Storm Peaks and Icecrown are almost exclusive to flyers. Almost every quest requires you to fly somewhere with no ground access. If you did both starting zones on your way to 80, you will hit 80 before needing to touch these zones. If you only did one starting zone, you might need one of those zones to reach 80. It would not be fun grinding mobs all day without quests or having to do lots of dungeon runs just to get to 80.
Giolon Dec 2nd 2008 3:48AM
Can the various dungeon quests be done on Heroic mode at level 80 or do they have to be done on Normal?
Static Dec 2nd 2008 3:31AM
My question:
I'm a casual player and finally, after months of grinding, i have 5k gold to buy the Epic Flying skill. Now that i have the money to buy this skill... i'm not really sure it's wise to buy the skill now. Will a future patch lower the cost of Epic Flying? Cuz for me, as a casual player, grinding k's of gold takes ages and i would h8 to discover i just threw away k's of gold because Epic Flying suddenly costs (e.g.) 3k gold less...
Acceptable Risk Dec 2nd 2008 4:22AM
There's no indication that I know of that they're planning on reducing the cost any time soon. I'd go ahead and spend it. It's just gold, and as soon as you're riding around at epic flight speed, you'll wonder how you managed without it.
vhdblood Dec 2nd 2008 6:44AM
You have no idea how much you want the epic flyer until you have it. Also, the amount of gold I can make in a day is staggering, so wasting a few thousand isn't really an issue. I would say go for this, no question.
Vocenoctum Dec 2nd 2008 12:54PM
I'll tell you, the first time I was looking at the 5k, I was a little worried, but then a buddy got one and then someone in Nagrand kept outrunning me to scan the energy...
So, one character had it, and then suddenly on my alts, it felt like I was being punished by not having it. Now I have 3 of my 4 level 70's with epic, and that last one is just tedious to fly with...
Land Mount difference is 60% and 100% speeds, and you can feel the difference.
Now imagine the difference between +60% and 280%.
Static Dec 3rd 2008 2:27AM
Thanx for your replies guys... it would be foolish NOT to buy Epic Flying. See you above Azeroth ;)

The collectors edition comes with a soundtrack of all the music in Northrend but is there a way to just get the soundtrack?
Soatari Dec 2nd 2008 1:32PM
As of yet there is no legal way to get just the soundtracks for Blizzard's games. Hopefully they make them available at some point in the future, be it digital purchase or CD copy. I still love my Warcraft 3 soundtrack.
