Lore unfolding

There were a lot of lore quests in TBC, of course, but often the coolest ones required at least five people to get through if not a full 25 man raid group. So far in WotLK I have run all of the big new lore quests either solo or with a small group of two or three other players. The Admiral Revealed in particular was a great big lore bomb for the size of the group that accomplished it. There are huge revelations available in game that change the very foundation of the Warcraft setting and they're very easily accessible.
On the whole, I enjoy this immensely. I wondered what that guy's deal was, and I have to admit that Blizzard managed to create a real sense of epic scope and scale to what is an entirely soloable quest line in the Wrathgate quests. It's one thing to say you're going to involve players in things from the very beginning, but it's another thing to do it: by now I've had run-ins with the Lich King, the Old Gods, disaffected servants of the Titans themselves and I'm just starting to get ready for raiding. I've seen Loken betray his brother to the old gods (in what I can only believe will be a preview of what I can expect to fight in Ulduar) and fallen down a hole in the glacier to where Arthas... well, I won't directly spoil it for you, but any quest where I have to cut open Faceless Ones to smear their blood all over myself is amping up the creepy factor considerably.
So we turn now to you: are you satisfied with how Blizzard is dealing with the lore this expansion? Are you enjoying the quests? Any particular favorites (I've listed some of mine, now it's your turn) or clunkers?

I'm loving the way blizzard is dealing with lore this expansion! The quests are amazing and addicting, they aren't as repetitive as BC's were.
My absolute favorite so far has to be Zul'Drak chains, including "Betrayal". These sudden Lich King appearances are great!

It's too bad the Lich King's such a weak, stereotypical bad guy. Blizzard needs a Joker for their next villain.

Speaking of the LK - I'm torn about the change in voice actor.
On one hand, I think the new one sounds much more "big bad guy" whereas the old one was whiny and a little annoying. The other side of me wants to hear that voice, as a reminder. I always appreciate the nods to things from the past that Blizzard puts into their games. Hearing the exact same lines from Muradin in the flashbacks was one of the highlights of Wrath for me so far!

try seating up your boom for 4 years on a big piece of ice waiting for someone to come over, and see if your voice is still the same

I've loved the way that the lore has been unfolding in this Expansion and the sheer epic feeling of being able to do these quests outside of Raids. In BC they started it off well I thought, Hellfire had some fun and innovative quests, but once you got to other areas it just seemed to be more of the same. Instead with WLK they seem to have something new in every area as well as the usual classic feeling to it all.
I say cheers to Blizz for being able to improve upon their flaws from the previous expansion.

I have yet to get much beyond the Wrathgate quest line on my Paladin (only playing that character when my wife can be on her Mage so we can run with each other) but I have loved what I've seen so far. Ran through the Death Knight starting area twice, watched the Wrathgate cinematic twice (once on my wife's computer, once on mine) and I've been loving the quests that are done from the back of a mount.

You may not know this, but you can watch it again by just talking to alexstrazsa and asking to see what happened. for once they were nice about replays

Being a Guild Leader and being the resident "Lorenerd" for the guild, all the amount of lore in Lich King makes me ECSTATIC. Especially because I have people asking me so many questions finally about what happened when, who this person was and what not. It's definitely fun for me since I got tired of reading all the novels over and over again that have released.

Having just done the last quest chain mentioned there with the Faceless ones...
When I finished with the quest and was going to log off for the evening, I tried to save my game. First time since the very beginning of WoW. It had kept me so engrossed, that I just got lost in it.
It is a shame that *more* of the leveling up process didn't have quests like this. All the really neat things with phasing and I didn't see a blink of it till 76 at Wrathgate, and then again in Icecrown. Want to buy more phasing please!
Maybe that is the kind of gameplay style the new KotOR game will be? Or just the future of MMOs?
Chiper Dec 2nd 2008 6:32PM
Agreed, my only complaint with the phasing has been that there isnt enough of it. They could do SO MUCH with that tech, making the game actually feel like you're accomplishing something.
I want more! MOAR!

From Grizzly Hills to Zul'drak I really love the Drakuru quests. I've never been a huge fan a trolls, and though its not decidedly about trolls in particular, it was intriguing. The quest line in grizzly hills all the way to Drak'tharon was really cool, and made it feel more like I had a reason for going to the dungeon than just, time to go the dungeon.
In Zul'drak, on the lower level, doing all those quests involving Drakuru, and up to the finale are just really interesting. Honestly I find Zul'drak a rather dull place, just all apocolyptic and stuff, and though thats cool it got old a little fast for me. (Though I just got to the last level of Zul'drak and haven't checked out the rest yet) And although I found it a little dull, the quests livened everything up for me, I was totally into doing all the quests there, and its interesting the final solo boss encounter which is reminiscent of old console games at a final boss encounter, it was not just DPS to hell and win, it took movement and timing.
And of course seeing the Lich King again, and him actually speaking to you.
Anyone who has not involved themselves in the Drakuru quests needs to. Though I believe its nearly mandatory to really level up in the area.
Note: I tried to word that to not spoil too much, heh.

While I do enjoy reading the lore on WI and WowWiki, it's typically little more than a afterthought for me in-game. I generally don't read flavour text or quest text, and I only quest for rewards and/or efficient xp, and thus tend to avoid long questlines unless the rewards are worth it at the level cap.
I'm driven more by game play and social aspects than lore, I guess.
TheChao Dec 2nd 2008 3:27PM
Smear faceless ones' blood over yourself? I think you're getting this confused with a quest in Dragonblight, where you smear http://www.wowhead.com/?item=35688 over your body to show respect and dominance.
JM Dec 2nd 2008 3:48PM
No, he is correct. One of the quests does have you collect Faceless Ones' blood and when you turn the quest in you are told to smear the blood on yourself...

I love WOTLK. I love how I don't need a top-raiding guild to see cut-scenes and lore playing out right in front of me.
I hope Blizzard keeps taking the game in this direction.
I just wish the events of old-school WoW were more accessible back in the day. I missed out on Neferian in Vanilla WoW and Illidian in TBC and it makes me sad that I'm stuck watching youtube videos to see any of that stuff.
WOTLK finally makes me happy. I don' care if the hardcore raiders are crying either - they can go pound sand.

I, too, am really loving the lore now. I've just found and installed WC3 over the last couple weeks, and whenever there's downtime or just nothing else going on, I play through a couple of chapters of it. I just did the human campaign's "The Culling" about 3 days ago, and did the CoT Culling for the first time just last night. The dialogue was word-for-word the same, and rather than feeling rehashed or like there was a lack of effort, it felt all the more epic because of it. Good job Blizzard.

Just a quick comment on this article and other similar ones: You guys did a great job of warning about spoilers in all your beta threads and some of us are still getting through the content. Could you add in some spoiler warnings for the benefit of us slow levelers. There weren't too many here, but there are some articles I don't even click on to read just in case, a warning of spoilers would help us decide to click or not to click.

I love the quests so far. I'm only level 75 right now because I insist on completing all quests in a region, even if they've gone green, because I'm afraid I might miss something. So far I've completed HF, BT and their two starting dungeons. I have to convince myself to get off the computer and study now, since finals are next week for me... can't wait for winter break and ample free time!

Due to all of the lore, the great storytelling, and fun quest mechanics, leveling from 70-80 is not feeling at all like the grind 60-70 was. By the time I reached Netherstorm in BC, I had completely stopped reading quest text because it was likely going to be boring as hell and I just wanted to get on with things, but these epic Northrend quests have definitely changed that for me.

I am greatly enjoying the evolving lore of the Horde. My favorite quest so far was receiving the secret message from Saurfang, concerning the direction of the Horde after the Lich King falls. It had nothing to do with gear, money or rep. It just gave me a feeling of events happening below the radar, while we're all occupied with the LK, and my possible inclusion in grand decisions to come.
