Do the free realm transfers actually ever do anything?
There have been two free transfer periods to the realm I spend most of my time on, and it's still a ghost town compared to most realms.
About the only thing the free transfers did was earn Blizz lots of money when a goodly number of those foolish enough to transfer paid to go back.
Maybe it does work on some servers, but as far as I've seen it's pretty much a sad joke. The only way they're going to fix population imbalances is to merge servers, and they're not going to do that because it would be interpreted as a sign the game isn't doing well.

They really seem to have helped for Twilight's Hammer - after Wrath came out, we were having 500+ queues, but since the transfer has started I haven't had to queue, so that's a big improvement there

How would it be a sign that the game isn't doing too well?
If they merged two realms together (meaning any servers under those two realms would host the same new realm) it wouldn't change anything. It just means they're merging two realms to host a larger amount of people.
In some ways it can be looked on as being good because then you're not playing in a complete ghost town of a realm where there is hardly any social interaction.

Free transfers have worked somewhat for Oceanic realms. Aman'Thul was packed, transfers opened up which eased things for a few weeks and now it's full again (20+min to log-in in the evening, don't bother on weekends). Meanwhile at the transfer destination realm Saurfang Blizz now wants to transfer people off.

Saurfang does not transfer to Gundrak. Gundrak transfers to Saurfang.

Hmm... Nope. The source says:
We are also allowing transfers from this PvE realm:
Saurfang
Destination (PvP)
Gundrak
And I say:
Saurfang is now also eligible to transfer to Gundrak.
That's the same thing, unless I'm really off my kilter.

Sorry, original post was poorly written. How about:
Saurfang does not travel to other places. The rest of the world travels to Saurfang. ;)

Tell ya what, its darn right empty on Gundrak at the moment.

"We have extended the timeframe for the transfers to the Oceanic realm Gundrak. These transfers will close on Monday, December 8, at 12:00pm PST (December 9, 7:00am AEDT). We are also including the PvE realm Saurfang as a source realm to ensure those who wanted to play on a PvP server can continue to do so. "

According to the Current Eligible Realms page:
Barthilas, Jubei'thos, Dreadmaul, Thaurissian and Frostmourne -> Gun'Drak
That's the current state of affairs.

Anyone have any idea when Suarfang will be unlocked?
