Know Your Lore: Dalaran

Welcome to Know Your Lore, where each week Alex Ziebart brings you a tasty little morsel of lore to wrap your mind around. Sweet, sweet lore. Mmmm. Have suggestions for future KYL topics? Leave a comment below!
Dalaran, located in the heart of former Lordaeron territory, has been the center of Arcane knowledge since its creation, and could be considered the Humans' answer to Quel'Thalas, though the nation accepts Elves (and many others) in its ranks as well. Magic is Dalaran's lifeblood, and is even ruled through the strength and wisdom of its magi. Dalaran is a magocracy, a government ruled by a council of mages known as the Kirin Tor, elected by citizens of the nation. Their icon is the Violet Eye, with Violet being the motif used for the nation itself, and the color purple representing the Arcane as a whole in Warcraft (Arcane Missiles, Netherstorm).
Dalaran has been at war (or recovering from it) pretty consistently since the Second War, when Dalaran joined the Alliance of Lordaeron. The Second War being what it was and the Orcs being Orcs, Dalaran was quite nearly sacked but managed to hold on by a thread. The Magocracy quickly rebuilt, using an artifact they created and dubbed the Eye of Dalaran... and was immediately assaulted yet again. Teron Gorefiend, under orders from Ner'zhul (fulfilling a request from Deathwing), stormed the city yet again to steal the Eye.While the Eye was later retrieved by Khadgar and the Alliance Expedition, its current whereabouts are unknown. It's extremely likely that it ended up back in the hands of the Kirin Tor, but it's never been specifically stated. Either way, Dalaran rebuilt. Again.
Then it was destroyed in the Third War. ...Again. This time its destruction came at the hands of Archimonde, summoned into Azeroth by the Scourge, who still feigned allegiance to the Legion at the time. Archimonde made it look really, really easy, too. He basically built a sandcastle that looked like Dalaran and kicked it over. Through the power of magic, the real thing crumbled, too. Ah, magic. We love you so.
Archimonde, being the bonehead that he is (was), walked away without finishing the job. The Kirin Tor sealed the remains of the city within a supposedly impenetrable shield so they could rebuild yet again, this time rebuilding far more than just their city. In the Scourge and Archimonde's assault, the nation lost more than it ever has before, including some of its ruling council and the de facto leader Archmage Antonidas.
Very recently, Dalaran has emerged from its shell and rejoined the world to thwart the Blue Dragonflight, led by the aspect Malygos who believes mortals are not meant to wield magic at all. To some extent, the Kirin Tor agrees with the Blue Dragonflight; magic shouldn't be thrown around as haphazardly as it is... but they don't really agree with taking it away complete, for obvious reasons.
Not only has the Kirin Tor stepped up to stop Malygos, they've taken the fight to him in the most literal sense possible. They've used their magic to dig Dalaran right up out of the ground, sewers and all, and float it up to Northrend. At the behest of the new Archmage of Dalaran, Rhonin, the Horde has been allowed into the city en masse for the first time. Well, the first time they've been invited in, anyway. History has shown they sort of have a tendency to trample on through whenever they want.
While many see it is a necessary step, others such as Rhonin's own wife still haven't forgiven the Orcs or the crowd they roll with such as the Forsaken and Blood Elves. The Kirin Tor have managed to spark a cold (gang) war of sorts within their own city because of this. The High Elves of the Silver Covenant lay claim to half of Dalaran and the Blood Elves of the Sunreavers claim the other half, in the names of the Alliance and the Horde respectively.

While those were the major historical events for the nation, most parts of modern civilization have some ties to the city, whether it be something such as Jaina Proudmoore having trained under Archmage Antonidas, or something as simple as rulers and major figures having passed through the city. While the coins you can fish up in Dalaran are meant to be funny, they really drive the point home about how many stories have had crossroads in Dalaran. Arugal, Kel'thuzad, and Kael'thas have all had their 'beginnings' in Dalaran, and many, many more have passed through on their journeys.
Even if Dalaran doesn't have the best record when it comes to war, the city certainly has a special place in the hearts of Humanity, and probably even Elf-kind these days. Plus it's super pretty.

Why are high elves disdainful of blood elves? I wasn't aware that the two groups had any reason to hate each other...
Rokisha Dec 5th 2008 5:27AM
I imagine the High Elves don't approve of the majority of elves joining the Horde.

Because Blood Elves use fel energies to satiate their lust for magic, and High Elves don't...somehow...I don't really know. According to WoWWiki they meditate for at least 1 hour a day to try and suppress their magical needs, and that a High Elf can become a Blood Elf if he/she chooses to give into their need to magic.
Seems to me if that was the case then Blood Elves could in fact become High Elves if they chose to abstain from feeding on fel energies long enough to purge them from their bodies.

I think the main reason is that the High Elves see the Blood Elves as tainted due to their eating of other peoples/things magic. (Basically if High Elves ever became a playable race they would not have the same racial abilities as Blood Elves.) Since the loss of the Sunewell both Blood Elves and High Elves have felt their yearning and addiction to magic, but the Blood Elves have gone a little further to sate their appetites. Also the BEs have joined the horde while the HEs stayed pretty loyal to the Alliance even when the Alliance wasn't that loyal to them.
I think basically High Elves see the whole Blood Elf race as bing drug addicts (which in a way they are. Or were prior to the Sunwell Raid.)
Speaking of the Sunwell Plateau , has there been any follow up to what happened in the raid and seeing how it affects the Blood Elves? Are they addicted to the arcane anymore?
Nice Article BTW.

high elves hate blood elves because they used fel magic.
JBurg Dec 4th 2008 7:40PM
Something like this...
The High Elves see the Blood Elves as traitors who gave into their weakness and embraced fel magic. Along the way they have allied with naga, trolls, orcs, and even the undead(forsaken).
The Blood Elves think the High Elves have abandoned their people to ally with the humans that left the elven in their moment of need.

The Blood Elves followed a maniacal leader who would eventually turn around and screw over his own race. The Blood elves went to demonic magic in order to satiate their hunger for magic. The High Elves did not. They probably could make amends, but the Blood elves did a big no-no in the eyes of the High elves(demons are bad). So, they hate each other. Maybe one day they will come back together, but I doubt it for now.

It's not anything like that.
Ctrl-F on wowwiki.
"Her cousin Zendarin Windrunner, a blood elf who hated humans, tried to kidnap her children, as Zendarin believed the offspring of a high elf and a human mage would have a lot of magic power. "
It's personal only.

The elves of WoW have a very defined pecking order:
Night Elves think their off-shot ex-kin the High Elves are reckless for their use of Arcane magic.
High Elves think their use of Arcane magic is okay, but Fel magic like the Blood Elves use? No way.
Blood Elves think they have the situation perfectly under control, and point at the Wretched as the result of someone who doesn't.
The Wretched don't care, they just want more.

Are the Blood Elves still using fel energy to "calm the shakes"? I thought the whole Sunwell Isle/M'uru storyline had them finally rejecting the ways of Kael'thas and embracing the Light for power. Maybe that's just the Blood Knights.
Anyway, at this point I think it's mostly a political separation, kinda like how the High Elves split from the Night Elves. I don't think there were many (or any) warlocks in High Elf society, especially after playing with demons caused a lot of problems for them in the Sundering.
Coik Dec 4th 2008 11:50PM
At present the differences between High and Blood Elves do seem to be mostly political, but there is some evidence that sucking down demonic energy was changing the Blood Elves as well physically as well. Most notably, the fact that their eyes glowed green instead of blue, and the existence of the "fel elves" in Magister's Terrace and at the Throne of Kil'jaden.
Whether the physical changes will continue now that the Sunwell has been reignited remains to be seen. We might end up with the race fractioning again, so we end up with the High Elves, the Blood Elves, and those Blood Elves who just couldn't get enough of that wonderful fel energy and think red skin and bat wings are a small price to pay...

One thing that feel that was a missed opportunity in WotLK was seeing Dalaran actually relocate from Alterac to it's current position in Northrend (I was hoping to see it as part of the WotLK intro movie).
I would definately like to be able to go up to a Kirin Tor mage who tells me about why Dalaran moved and then show me in a 'vision' it actually moving. Maybe it could involve Malygos and his Draginflight attacking old-location-Dalaran causing the mages to make the decission to move the city. Obviously seeing the city itself raised out of the ground would be visually striking.
I'm sure Blizz have some plans for future in-game movies but it would be great if they were able to go back and re-create other scenes that were only described in text.
Muse Dec 4th 2008 8:43PM
Now that you mention it, yeah, that would've been cool. Kinda wish I'd been in the area the day they decided to take off. "We're just relocating the city, nobody panic."
Bjara Dec 4th 2008 11:53PM
I agree with this so much. I really thought (and hoped!) we'd actually -see- Dalaran moving or have a little event explaining things at the crater or . . .something. Not just a "hey, Dalaran is in Northrend now by the way." Really my only disappointment about the xpac so far.
MisterMoose Dec 5th 2008 2:45AM
Not much different than the "Hey, we've been invading Northrend for a while, which is why we have all these keeps and such built in so short a time...too bad you weren't here to help" that already exists in Northrend.
I really don't think they were nearly as ambitious with the phasing tech as they could have been. Not by a long, long shot.
Mogarane Dec 5th 2008 8:54AM
I could see this vision being a new COT instance.

@woot
About the dwarves.. point us to where that happened please.
and the Draenei you seem to think they did that maliciously? I'm also not so sure about the humans and high elves taking land from the trolls. I was pretty sure their empires were crumbling well before the night elves were even night elves and it was just the Highborn and the trolls. I'll have to get back on that.
But if you're going to act like you know everything about lore, try citing some references cuz you just look like an asshole.
