Normal dungeon gear for Hunters in Wrath of the Lich King Part II
Back to Part IWaist
Here's something a little freaky: The Giant Ring Belt from the Sons of Hodir's faction vendor at honored and the Waistband of the Thuzadin from Salramm the Fleshcrafter in The Culling of Stratholme are completely identical in every way except the name. That means they're both excellent Hunter belts, and you can take your choice which one to get. Do you want to hope for a dungeon drop, or grind one of the non-tabarded Wrath factions for a bit?
Wrist
For the Wrist slot, I'll have to recommend that you track down a Leatherworker again. The Eaglebane Bracers take 40 Icy Dragonscales to craft, which are skinned off high level blue dragons, most of them of the dungeon elite variety. But it's well worth, as the stats on the Eaglebane Bracers blow away pretty much any other bracer you can get before heroics or naxxaramas. You could probably wear these straight into Naxxaramas, in fact.
If you have trouble with the dragonscales, though, you can also get the Tornado Cuffs off of Ionar in the Halls of Lightning. They don't have the stats of Eaglebane, but they're a fine stopgap piece.
Cloak
For pure attack power and a nice bit of hit rating, you may want to pick up the Embrace of Sorrow off the Maiden of Grief in Halls of Stone. However, if you prefer a bit more agility, you can grab either the Cloak of Holy Extermination from Honored Argent Crusade faction if you need Armor Penetration, or the Centrifuge Core Cloak from Varos Cloudstrider in the Oculus if you like haste.
Out of these three, I lean toward the Cloak of Holy Extermination myself. While armor penetration isn't as drool worthy as it once was, the cloak has a bit more Agility than the Embrace of Sorrow, adding more of that nice critical strike rating. Of course, if you're not quite hit-capped yet, the Embrace of Sorrow may still be better.
Neck
If you don't want to pay through the nose for a Jewelcrafter to make you a Titanium Impact Choker, your best bet for a pre-heroic necklace may actually be questing in Icecrown. The Severed Noose of Westwind is a quest reward from The Admiral Revealed, a group quest from the Knights of the Ebon Blade. It has agility, critical strike rating, and attack power in comparable amounts to the choker, although with no armor penetration and less stamina, and it has a yellow gem socket.
Rings
For Rings, you'll want to head up to Ulduar. In the Halls of Lightning, General Bjarngrim will drop the Bjarngrim Family Signet, which comes with lots of agility and attack power. Even if you can't use the haste rating on it, the agility and the AP alone blow away most other pre-heroic possibilities aside from uber-expensive crafted rings.
Speaking of expensive crafted rings, you may want to see if you can get your hands on a Ring of Scarlet Shadows. This jewelcrafted ring has a good outlay of critical strike rating, attack power, and hit rating, plus a socket, and will make a fine pair with the Bjarngrim. If Halls of Stone trash drops or the AH treat you well, you could also pick up a Palladium Ring, which sports attack power and critical strike rating that make it a very viable alternative to either of the other two rings.
Trinket
For Trinkets, I'm once again going to recommend you go after a faction reward, in particular the Oracle Talisman of Ablution from the Oracles of Sholozar Basin. The proc helps keep you out of Aspect of the Viper, and we just love that critical strike rating.
As far as other trinkets go, You may want to consider gathering the Darkmoon Noble's Deck and getting the agility version of the Darkmoon Card: Greatness. It'll take some money and work -- The Inscription recipe Darkmoon Card of the North randomly generates the cards you need -- but 90 agility and a 300 agility proc is nothing to sneeze at.
Since both of the above are a lot of grinding, you may want some easier to get trinkets to help you out. In that case, you're going to want to dig pretty far back, since it seems like Trinkets that are optimal for Hunters are hard to come by. Alliance can dig back to the Borean Tundra for the Death Knight's Anguish from the Lost Rites questline, while both sides might like the First Mate's Pocketwatch from The Jig is Up in Borean Tundra. Yes, it's true it's not amazing for Beastmasters because of the Haste on use, but the 88 attack power is nothing to sneeze at. Horde can also grab the Scarab of Isanoth from a quest in Dragonblight. if you don't mind haste you might also want to grab the fire-proccing Vestige of Haldor from King Ymiron in Utgarde Pinnacle. You can also grab its Holy cousin, the Horn of Argent Fury, from the quest That's What Friends Are For... in Zul'drak.

I'm currently using the Empty Mug of Direbrew in one of my slots. Any idea where I might find a replacement for it?
I also use the Devilsaur Tooth. Are there any pet-specific trinkets in Northrend worth looking at?
And thanks for this guide; I picked up the Zombie Sweeper the other day and was very impressed with performance, if only a bit disappointed by it's rather plain appearance. :)

Unfortunately, Michael, I have yet to see any real pet-focus trinkets in Northrend. But since they do get all my hit rating and a portion of my attack power, I figure many trinkets can technically double as a pet trinket.
As far as a clear upgrade to the Mug of Direbrew, If you mean a straight up attack power plus attack power on use trinket, I'm not sure there is a major one until Sapphiron in Heroic Naxxramas, but I just updated the trinket section of this article, so you might see if you like any of the new trinkets I mentioned.

Thanks Daniel!
Speaking of the Devilsaur Tooth, do you happen to know why Blizz changed it to +AG and AP proc, and removed the most excellent 100% chance to crit on next pet attack?
Daniel Whitcomb Dec 4th 2008 10:47PM
My guess would be that they decided to abandon the idea of trinkets that directly affect pets. In particular, they actually revamped the 50 quest rewards a while back to make some of the rewards a little less "essential," such as removing the ability of the Warlock trinket to summon a free Voidwalker which could then be "left behind" to automatically desummon for a free soul shard.

Chuchu's box is so not for hunters. All it has is AP, unless you are a melee hunter O.O
Daniel Whitcomb Dec 4th 2008 1:25PM
You know, I didn't notice that the proc was melee only. Yeah, so it's not half as good for Hunters as I thought.
Chronus Dec 4th 2008 1:41PM
It says it only procs on Melee, but according to the spell: http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=61618
The range is 40 yards.

I find the Hit Rating gear is very important, especially at 80. If I don't have over 150 HR, I miss A LOT - especially in Heroics.
Just a FYI - I know people love Crit and AP, but just a head's up - you might want to sacrifice some Crit % for more Hit Rating.
BTW - anyone know the Hit cap for Hunters at level 80?
Daniel Whitcomb Dec 4th 2008 1:44PM
That's a good question, Netherscourge. Right now there's some debate over whether the hit cap is 8.1% or 9% for Hunters at 80. There's been conflicting parses that would suggest either, and we may need more data to know for sure. Depending on how safe you want to play it, that means it's 296 hit rating or so for that 9% number for raid level bosses.
And yeah, I probably should have mentioned this in the article, but I am a strong believer in hitting a 5% hit percentage for tackling 5-man dungeons or PvP, which is around 164 hit percentage, and is why I tried to mention a few solid hit rating providing items in this guide.

Aw man, I was getting excited when I first saw this article...but then I realized what it was about :(
I suppose it could be helpful, but all you really have to do is level up and do quests, and you'll see most of this gear anyway. Is there any plans, hopfully soon, for finalized gear and itemization? I need help on my gear! This is me:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Lothar&n=Traxes
I've done all the Heroics and Raids but need to know what I should be rolling on or not in the end. I want the gun from Kel Thuzad in Naxx25, but i haven't seen it drop yet, and was wondering if it's really worth it.
I'm also curioius about gemming. TBC it was stacking +agi. Now, I see everywhere to stack +ArP, is it really better, and why? Does it make up for all the stuff Agi gives you and your pet?
Which brings me to my next question :)
Being BM, should I still focus on heavy Haste and ArP, or go for more Crit %? The way my talents make myself and my pet sync, crit seems important. Do I want more, harder crits slower, or sustained, quicker shots?
Thanks!
foxkreig Dec 4th 2008 7:11PM
as a fellow BM hunter. honestly i'd stray away from more than a little haste. it in and of itself does little for your pet unless your crit rate is fueling your pet with focus.
and armor penetration is also only good for your personal dps. and is a buff somewhat mitigated in groups by other classes armor debuffs. because your armor pen is factored in after theirs in so theirs blanks out a certain percentage of whatever penetration you've put up.
i have a small amount of haste, and have been working on stacking crit and AP because both directly affect my pet's dps and the critting boosts the pet via cobra strikes, and go for the throat.

Assuming the hit cap IS 9%, then you can get there with 197 hit rating and 3/3 Focussed Aim. This talent is low enough in the MM tree that pretty much any spec can get it.
Got to love those Savage Cobalt Slicers - level 74 items that are pretty hard to replace, the combined hit rating is incredible.
There are a couple of other good LW pieces not mentioned too: Razorstrike Breastplate and Virulent Spaulders. Eaglebane Bracers were mentioned but are worth mentioning twice ;-)
Check the AH for Belt of Tasseled Lanterns (BOE drop, not sure where from). Silly name, good stats.
Quest reward blue trinkets: Fezzik's Pocketwatch and First Mate's Pocketwatch. Always handy to have a backup if your first watch breaks.
Not as good as the shotgun, but you will have access to it earlier: Hemet's Trophy Gun, quest reward from our old friend in a new location (Sholazar).
