Phat Loot Phriday: Staff of the Great Reptile
I tried to find some great caster/healing staves for you to work towards this weekend, but they're hard to come by, and strangely enough I couldn't find a single caster staff as a reputation reward -- Druids get all the good ones I found. This one's from an instance you can run this weekend, though, and it should hold you up until you hit 80 and head into the endgame.Name: Staff of the Great Reptile (Wowhead, Thottbot, WoWDigger)
Type: Rare Staff
Damage/Speed: 148-269 / 2.10 (99.5 DPS)
Abilities:
- +81 Spirit, which has been becoming more and more useful lately. It's really still the domain of Warlocks and Shadow Priests, but depending on the talents and other gear you've got, Spirit, especially this much of it, can be more helpful than you'd think.
- Improves haste rating by 66, which again, will depend on the other stats you've got to figure out just how much it'll help you. Haste gets more and more important as you head towards the endgame, but especially with the changes to Haste affecting global cooldowns, this could be really great for anybody casting instants as well.
- And increases spell power by 271, which is a no brainer. You'll definitely be able to get more spell power by the time you hit 80, but for the level, this is a decent place to start.
- And, I have to say, subjectively I admit, it's a badass-looking staff.
How to Get It: Drak'theron is one of my favorite new instances, and while King Dred doesn't really have any new abilities to throw at you (his worst trick is a DoT that you have to top off to get rid of), he is an awesome boss, especially if you're a fan of Jurassic Park. Get in Drak, down the big bad devilsaur, and win the roll, and you've got yourself a shiny new staff.
There are a few blues floating around, including a BoE that you can probably find on the AH (probably not cheap), but this is pretty much it until you hit level 80 and start running those instances, Heroics, and Naxxramas. Druids wanted their itemization and they got it -- while there are plenty of Feral Staves floating around, it's tough to find a really standout caster staff (though I'm sure our commenters could come up with a few good ones) until the endgame.
Getting Rid of It: Vendors will give you a whopping 15g 62s 25c when you're all done with it, or you can disenchant it into a Dream Shard.

Just picked this up on my priest.

I'm confused, spirit is the domain of warlocks? I don't have a warlock past 40, but I was under the impression they went stamina+spellpower-->intellect-->crit-->spirit
Whereas druids, with glyphed innervate and imp moonkin and living spirit....
Gizmo Dec 5th 2008 7:12PM
Warlocks with Fel Armor (gained at 62) get a benefit: 30% of spirit plus (some number) added to spellpower.
Other than that? nothing.
Lockeheed Dec 5th 2008 7:34PM
Warlocks get bonus Spellpower equal to 30% of their Spirit. More useful than Intellect OR Crit for Affliction warlocks, IMO, but not really for Destro Locks.

We also need some amount of spirit for improving life tap.
Still, Chilly Slobberknocker is not only better in name but in stats. This has no stam, which is a major turnoff for me.

I am also surprised that this isn't listed as a Resto Druid or Holy Priest item.
There are better staves available for DPS casters that have some great +Spell Power and +Spell Hit. One such staff is available from the Arena quests in Zul'Drak:

By far one of the best pre-80 caster staffs is the Slobberknocker. It's an awesome staff from the Amphitheater of Anguish quest chain, at the very end. Any group of 5 should be able to handle it no problem, and it's a short chain if you get the group together.
In my opinion, that is much easier than a random drop off an optional boss in one of the more lackluster instances in Wrath.

Oh and btw ....
Enchants don't show up on this model.
Someone on wowhead said the same for the Great Reptile Staff and it is the same for the Stave of Youthful sorrow.
Evi Dec 5th 2008 8:39PM
Wow, that's one sweet looking staff.

Aside from the bonus thanks to Fel Armor and improving Life Tap, how else is Spirit helpful to Warlocks. I've never quite understood this, and I play one. A friend told me that spirit is now a coeffecient in drain spells, but was never able to find a concrete answer on that.

not sure who is in more need of a life... those that spend all of their wow time upgrading equipment, or the loser troll with the stupid name...
Vorgaak Dec 5th 2008 10:40PM
I don't like the model... its way to short... more like half staff or a mace even. If it was bigger and longer, it could be sweet.
guar6dian Dec 6th 2008 12:55AM
...that could surely be said of many things! :0

"And, I have to say, subjectively I admit, it's a badass-looking staff."
Maybe it's only me, but I think that staff looks really, really plain...
syco Dec 6th 2008 6:43AM
I was sort of disappointing that it has nearly exactly the same model as the staff it replaced, the Life Staff of the Web Lair

From the perspective of a holy-46/disc-25 hybrid priest, it is a good upgrade, though. You lose all that int, and in the process lose a slight amount of MP5, but the spellpower and haste gain makes it worth it. You just have to balance it out in your gear. I got most of the Int back with the Robes of Novos, which also drops in Drak'tharon on the boss before Dred...

Mike,
It would behoove you to have your cohort Zach Yonzon proof read your articles if you're going to write about Warlocks.
I'd like to know where in the world you came up with "It's really still the domain of Warlocks and Shadow Priests".
Also, why in the world would you want to potentially run an instance over and over again to get a staff when you can knock out the arena quest and get the Slobberknocker?
Come on do some research.
rocnroll Dec 6th 2008 9:44AM
Spirit is also still the domain of Holy Priests. I don't have a high level Lock, but I thought they liked +stamina as well?
Ilnara Dec 6th 2008 11:15AM
To each their own.. I'm sure many people, myself included would wonder why you pay for a game that you patently don't understand the mechanics of.
Your first person god mode cheat code shooters and your tired console system is that way ---->
