WoW, Casually: 7 reasons to make a Death Knight
Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player with limited playtime.
Many casual players have discovered the wonders of making a Death Knight since WotLK was released, but in case there are still some holdouts, here are some reasons why those of us with limited playtime should definitely give the class a try.
7. Gnomes.
Seriously. Widdle gnome Death Knights with pigtails destroying multiple mobs 10 times their size are worth the price of admission. The spousal unit and I went back to our neglected Alliance server just to make a gnome DK duo. Our guild there has long since dispersed and our friends are all on different servers, but who cares? It's all about fun and tiny agents of death = fun. Awww, dks in love.
6 more serious reasons for a casual player to make a Death Knight are after the break.
6. DKs make excellent alts.
Whether you use alts to maximize your rest (good idea), keep your WoW time fresh or escape from bad situations, it's good to have at least one playable alt around and Death Knights are an excellent choice. If you've been playing this game a while, you've probably done all the starting quests a few times and are tired of them. With a Death Knight, you hit the ground running at 55, the first three levels are done before you know it and you're ready to zip through the Burning Crusade.
5. DKs make excellent gatherers.
Though they hinted a couple BlizzCons ago that Death Knights wouldn't have to go back to Elwynn Forest to kill wolves or pick flowers in order to level their professions, nothing like that was ever implemented. So, it doesn't matter what professions you choose, you have to start right along with the level 5 characters. That having been said, the fact that you get an epic mount for free (well, you steal it) really helps catch up to your level -- at least in the gathering professions. The cost of leveling the crafting professions is rather prohibitive, but gathering is a quick and easy thing to do which adds useful abilities, feeds your other crafters and can net you lots of extra cash on the AH. I particularly recommend Herbalism and Skinning. You get a free heal and a crit buff, they are the quickest of the three to level and you don't have to switch your minimap find function.
4. Death Knights are EZ mode.
Maybe you haven't read about the best builds/gear/techniques for playing your Death Knight, but for leveling purposes, you don't need to read a thing. Just pick the talents that seem fun and start mowing through your opponents. They are a bit overpowered while leveling, allowing you to solo even elite mobs above your level and defend yourself against the DK hating gankers (of which there are a few on PvP servers). They are also really good at fighting multiple mobs at a time, making questing that much faster.
3. Warlocks in plate.
This is kind of a repeat of number 4, but soloability is important to those of us whose schedules don't allow for much grouping. If you go Unholy spec, you get a pet ghoul that obeys your commands and is ready to fight whenever you are. Well... a couple seconds after you are... he has to crawl out of the ground first. With very little effort, dying is a rare event and everything short of instances can be done by the two of you.
2. Desecration.
Having arms pop up out of the ground while you fight is delightfully creepy goodness. Yes, I am biased toward the Unholy spec.
And the number one reason to make a Death Knight, whether casual or hardcore or anywhere inbetween:
1. The starting quests.
The lore, the instanced world, the quest chains, Arthas whispering in your ear -- the starting DK quests are sheer gaming pleasure. I have never had such a hard time reconciling my personal ethics with what I was doing in-game (yes I did things the hard way -- the light side -- in KotOR) and I loved every minute of it. Even if you abandon your DK right after your walk of shame to Thrall or King Varian Wrynn, the first three levels of being a Death Knight is worth spending a few of your play sessions.
WoW, Casually is a column for those of us who are playtime-challenged and proud Welfare Epic wearers. If you have questions or tips about how to get the most out of your limited playtime, please send them to Robin.Torres AT weblogsinc DOT com for a possible future column.

@ I don't think I'll ever go back to my Mage.
ive been hearing a lot of that lately
maybe blizz will realize they screwed up when 60% of the poeple online are all Dk's and all other classes are underrepresented because they just get pwned by less skilled, OP, DKs
so they "particpate"
i just dont understand why they would do this to their own game?
ooo my friend - they did auto level them to 55
Maever Dec 6th 2008 1:58PM
Gnome Death Knights eh...
They're perfect for the job !
Small, compact, easy to use.
Perfect to spread a plague !
sharkeater75 Dec 6th 2008 1:58PM

You keep saying you're going away, but all you do is stand in the corner and cry bitter tears.
Cyanea Dec 6th 2008 2:07PM
I cannot WAIT for DKs to be hit with the Nerf Hammer. The tears that flood the servers will be delicious indeed.
"3. Warlocks in plate."
No. No. No. Nononono. A thousand times no.
Unlike DKs, Warlocks actually take some SKILL to play, kthnx.
the awesome Dec 6th 2008 2:08PM
I was disheartened to read that you had recently started playing on Xbox Live. But, after reading your posts full of spelling and grammatical errors and an attitude that conveys a generally sour character I am sure you will fit right in. I really would prefer if people like you didn't try to take a dump in the middle of my living room each and everytime I attempt to play an online multiplayer game.
offday Dec 6th 2008 2:09PM
The tears can't be as bad as the ones coming from you right now.
Meez Dec 8th 2008 9:19PM
I love my DK, I also love my Priest, Rogues, Hunter, Shaman, Paladin, Druid and Mage.
I am damned glad I didn't have to start another class at level 1 and grind 70 to 80 lvls just to keep a few malcontents happy. I think the vast majority of those who have created DKs have served their apprenticeship with their other toons.
I have seen great DKs and crap DKs the same as in any other class.
If you think they make a crap addition in a party, don't party, if you really hate them and want to kill them all, then take your uber non-DK toon that you have mastered to the point of 'perfection' over your incredibly long tenure in game and kick their collective arses in the BGs.
Whatever you do, just don't whine like a brat, get over it, play the way you like, DKs don't stop you from enjoying the game the way you like to play it, the only thing stopping you from having fun is you.
SE75 you really need to take a good long look at your anti-social attitude problem and decide if you should be playing any games at all! You seem to lack the most basic essential for a gamer of any kind and that is gamesmanship. This is most apparent from your arrogance, uncivility and impoliteness.
etokoko Dec 6th 2008 2:20PM
There is one bad part to leveling your dk that I have seen and that is losing all that gear you start off with that made you look so ba.
Matdredalia Dec 6th 2008 2:35PM
@ Cyanea -
What part of "Hero Class" did you not understand?
Amaxe Dec 6th 2008 2:37PM
I liked the story for the DK of course (except for the Light's Hope Chapel). They are kind of interesting to play around with. I tend to think of them as Plate wearing Shamans though (including a semi-self rez with Shadow of Death). I have an 80 Shaman, and playing a DK leaves me feeling "haven't I already done this?"

Apparently, shark doesn't have the reading comprehension of his 3rd grader. Read it again shark. Maybe you shouldn't drink so much while you're commenting.

@Sharkeater75
Rarely do I post on forums. Yet having casually trawled through this list of 'arguments' and 'counter-arguments', I feel a necessity to bring you back down to earth.
Whether you are a 1975 or 1995 is quite irrelevant. But what worries me is your own unbelievable 'belief' in your own 'greatness'. This concept is reflected in the truly disgusting arrogance portrayed in your posts. This really worries me when this concept is taking into extreme within the artificial reality of a game (italicized).
I work in hospital and it is true that often 90% of stereotypes are quite correct. I would say that you would be a stereotypical chap whom if I met your 'wife' or 'child' (if you did indeed have one), I would sigh, and some thoughts going through my head would include.. 'What chance do they have?.
For your sake and their sake, stop typing for a moment. Go back and read through every single thing that you have typed.
Here is a little comic for you: 'http://xkcd.com/481/' ... I hope it helps.
And here is a recently 'dugged' article on digg.com which again emphasizes a point 'http://www.livescience.com/culture/081205-teen-self-esteem.html'.
Bring yourself down back to earth. It's hard but there is still potential and hope that your idiocy can be reversed. It would benefit you, your family, and everyone else in contact with you. Tolerance after all is a virtue and expectation, not a curse.
Maarick Dec 6th 2008 2:44PM
nice stats Shark, give me some of your regen
im not quitting yet
but i have been unknowningly involved in Depo's Crusade to slay all DKs i come accross. my only problem now is I cant kill them in my own faction. i litterally stop everything i am doing to kill these fools, sometimes they just pop immuntuy to fear...i wish i could hit one button and win the fight...but thats another issue, hopefully demonic circle will solve that prolbem, assuming i put it down every 40 steps, grrr
when i am looking for a group, a druid, warroir, or a pally tank always gets an inv before a DK for tanking. and yea they cant have a dps spot either. just go outside and solo elites yourself. these other guys had to put some work in and actuallly spec that way and actually learn how to tank and gimp themselves in other areas of the game so they always get the first chance with me
join the crusade
viva la resistance
down with the clowns
hold old is your kid? 3rd grade, have him create a DK, youll be doing the same content with him in 3 weeks :) itll be fun

YA YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ROLLFACE THRU THE ACTIONBAR!!!
Wicked Dec 6th 2008 3:18PM
Your #7 is my #1: My pink-pigtailed Gnome Death Knight kicks ass.
She should hit 80 tonight or tomorrow, I have 6 other characters at level 70 (Paladin, Hunter, Priest, Mage, Warlock, & Rogue) and she's most definitely the most fun to play out of them all.

pink pigtailed gnome DKs ftw! i've almost got her engineering all leveled as well, so that i can start a gnome biker gang. :D

So, even assuming that Death Knights are op (which, if you pay attention, becomes increasingly untrue as DK's level), you have no problem with overpowered classes. You are just pissed because YOU are not overpowered.
Everyone who plays Death Knight has played through at least 55 levels. Many have 70s, but CHOSE to handicap themselves by 15 levels in order to have a new experience. Blizzard intentionally gave them Outland-level starting gear and powerful starting abilities so those of us who wanted to try out Death Knight wouldn't be languishing in Outland for weeks, or even months, while everyone else got to experience the new content.
DeathPaladin Dec 6th 2008 3:34PM
As an afterthought here, to all the Death Knight haters out there:
Were none of you around at the beginning of The Burning Crusade? When for weeks the Alliance seemed to consist entirely of Draenei Shamen and the Horde was inundated with Blood Elf paladins?
If you are pissed at people trying out Death Knight, stop playing the game for a few months and wait for the novelty of the class to wear off. Some, like myself, will remain Death Knights and the rest will go back to their mains. And if you are still pissy, cancel your subscription, because WoW could use fewer people like you.
Amaxe Dec 6th 2008 3:42PM
Well, I think there was novelty involved at first with the Draenei/Belf which led to the number of creations. Of course as I understand it, Belfs are the largest represented race for the Horde, while humans are the most played race for the alliance.
Shamans are the least played class though with priests a close second (or at least it was last time I checked the census)
