BigRedKitty: Proto-Drake fever
Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the Hunter class, sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
The Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake comes from heroic Utgarde Pinnacle, the boss named Skadi the Ruthless. Skadi's loot-list on WoWHead doesn't include this mount, but the mount's page indicates that it does come from Skadi. And since we've got one, and we remember where we got it, we can confirm that heroic UP is where ya gotta be. But as we say in the movie, there are a couple other colors you can try to collect:
The Plagued Proto-Drake is the reward for completeing the normal Glory of the Raider achievement.
The Black Proto-Drake is the reward for completing the heroic Glory of the Raider achievement.
The Green Proto-Drake comes from the Sholazar Basin Oracles, a possible random reward from the Mysterious Egg.
The Red Proto-Drake comes from the heroic Glory of the Hero achievement.
The Reins of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake comes from a rare spawn in Storm Peaks that drops this mount.
The Violet Proto-Drake comes from the What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been achievement.
We've tamed a Spirit Beast and looted a proto-drake this year, our luck is probably done. If you're a squishie or a tank and need gear, come run an instance with us; mail-armor isn't going to drop for this hunter until 2010.
You are invited to download the full-sized version (74MB) of this movie here.
As always, a great big Thank You to the WoW Insider editors for allowing us to publish this movie both here and on our little blog at the same time!

You forgot about the bronze one from the Culling of Stratholme.
apoxic Dec 7th 2008 11:07PM
That's not a PROTO-drake however.

That;s weird, I actually posted a second comment less than a minute later, saying the same thing when I realized my mistake. Not sure what happened to it.
archangel723 Dec 7th 2008 2:14PM
Sorry, just realized that one is a regular drake.
Tumleren Dec 7th 2008 2:34PM
Damn, those proto-drakes are so awesome... I want one :(
And what's with the whispering BRK? The missus' gone to bed?
elprogramer Dec 7th 2008 2:38PM
Bragging?
Frodo58 Dec 7th 2008 2:44PM
I loathe you BRK.....

You should not disrespect your superiors.

I want to know what animation it uses when given the /mountspecial slash command. Does it force the rearing up animation, or is it something different?
Balius Dec 7th 2008 5:59PM
@Isabella: They use their back legs and wings to stand, effectively having four legs on the ground.
Insects in real life have six legs and two sets of wings, or 10 limbs total (and often have other moveable bits like antennae and tongues and the like). I'm willing to not think of dragons as an evolution of reptile and consider the fantastic idea of four limbs and two wings reasonable.

Apologies, the reply above was intended for the next threaded discussion.

Interesting how these drakes seem to me to be more anatomically "correct" by having only 4 limbs instead of the weirder 6 limbs (i.e., 4 legs and 2 wings) of many dragons.
Plasmathrower Dec 7th 2008 3:17PM
They actually have very tiny arms much like a t-rex. So they have 6 limbs in total like all dragons and drakes
Isabella Dec 7th 2008 3:21PM
Actually, they have 6 limbs as well, but their 'arms' are tiny like a t-rex. I always wonder how they can stand up on the ground without faceplanting.
Zeplar Dec 7th 2008 3:17PM
Dragons are supposed to have 4 legs and 2 wings :(
The hard part is drawing them so the front legs are also arms and not having it look awful....
Zamboni Dec 7th 2008 3:54PM
When Mother Nature tried this in the real world, she used an extended ribcage to make the wings instead of trying come up with a third set of arm/legs.

I swear, BRK, part of why I love watching your vids is the sheer enthusiasm and love for the game that you show; it really comes out in your voice and it just makes me grin. With all the talk about stats and raids and class balance and QQ and the myriad other technical aspects, it's great to see stuff from someone who just plain loves playing the game.
blitzkrieg999 Dec 7th 2008 5:17PM
Saw one of these (blue) drop yesterday. I thought it was a much higher drop rate, it just required you to complete the Achievement of bringing down Skadi in one fly-by?
Redski Dec 7th 2008 5:25PM
Huh! Had no idea about the blue one. Thanks!
