I'm curious about this as well. I'm also wondering if you need to clear any of the mobs in his room or if you can just walk right through and start fighting him. I have a feeling I'll be going after this trinket since my brother and I have run Halls of Lightning roughly 20 times now without seeing the trinket drop once.

Blackheart won't incite if you're solo (And even if he did, it technically wouldn't matter since you'd have no-one else to attack).

I believe that you do still have to clear his room, however, though I'm not 100% sure on this since I haven't had a chance to try a solo run myself yet.
