Poll: Are you level 80 yet?
With the news last week that the majority of players are not level 80, and that Ghostcrawler considers you to be "hard core" (more or less) if you're at 80 already, the question that's come to my mind is: exactly how many people reading WoW Insider have hit the level cap already?I've only got one of my toons at 80. I suspect it's going to take over a year to get them all up to max level again. Not complaining, I just don't have the stomach to power level all my alts up like that so quickly. After playing the game since release I managed to get nearly every class to 70 before the release of Wrath, but that took...well...years.
Gotta space it out and everything.
But in our completely non-scientific and totally truthiness-ey poll, let us know. Are you level 80 yet?
| Less than 70 | |

| 70 - 73 | |
| 74 | |
| 75 | |

I'm shocked the number of cows is so low.
Spoonmaster Dec 7th 2008 8:07PM
There is no cow level.

Poll will be skewed, as many people can't be bothered to read a site such as this and be informed...
Or stay out of the fire for that matter.

But the point was to see "how many people reading WoW Insider have hit the level cap ", not a view of the general population - I'm sure Blizzard can do that themselves.
Lemons Dec 8th 2008 1:38AM
Exactly! The kind of people who read this site are the people I'd consider semi-hardcore, and even this poll is showing numbers that are slightly in favor of those under level 80.
I'd image the real numbers would show an even larger group of players are not yet level 80.

I think the number of 80's will be proportional to the raiding population pre-Wrath on a given server. Getting to 80 is fairly easy to do with the current expanse of quests and instances but it really depends how much time people want to spend exploring the content as opposed to leveling through it to get to progression-level-stuff.

"many people can't be bothered to read a site such as this and be informed"
Way to patronise a player base! By definition the subjects of your disdain won't read it. You do realise though that the game is designed to be played without having to read blogs and websites, right? The game itself 'informs' people to the degree they need and stuff like this is just extra info round the edges for those who want to take it a bit further, not an essential for anyone who dares to set foot in Azeroth.

"Or stay out of the fire for that matter."
Win.

I agree. Most of the casual players (that might not even be to 70 yet) prolly don't do much WoW research online.
The players that frequent sites like this are a little more than typical players, so I would presume a poll like this would show almost half saying they were at 80 (as it does).
IMHO

...but most of the people that read this website are not the typical "casual" gamer.
chaud Dec 7th 2008 8:32PM
On the contrary, most of the content here is for the more casual reader. I guess casual is a relative term.

@leighlu, @d
I agree, this is a skewed population, which makes me think it is a ceiling. Given all of the endgame topics WoW Insider covers, if "only" 47% of the readship has hit 80, that tells me that if you include the rest of the WoW population, the percentage is much smaller.
This feels about right to me. One data point: the 3-raid-a-week casual guild I belong to has about 230 toons in it (including alts); I figure at the end of BC, we had about 70 to 80 active raiders, and at this point, we have thirty-something people who have hit 80 and the rest are spread out between 70 and 80 or decided to level a Death Knight.

"3-raid-a-week casual guild"
THAT'S casual!?! Heh
Kaille Dec 7th 2008 9:01PM
I can't say who most of the people here are, but this site is great for the kind of casual player who likes to play well despite not wanting to invest huge amounts of time in the game, either playing or spending too much time trying to find the useful information.
Evelinda Dec 8th 2008 1:27AM
Amen, kaille... my highest level char is still only 72 (i have serious issues with altaholism :P), and i consider myself pretty well casual, but i read wowinsider, among other sites, because i like to know what i'm doing when i'm playing. Thanks wowinsider! :)

Well, the other side of the story is that Insider really doesn't offer much that's relevant to players with mains under 70. There was some great discussion of the new talent trees just after the 3.0.2 patch, a great listing of mods, and a ways back an introduction to new scourge bosses in old instances. But most days I drop in to see a large mess of articles about endgame raiding and the 70-80 leveling grind.
JBurg Dec 7th 2008 8:12PM
I marked 70-73. My old main is my feral druid and he is a bit higher than that, but with all the changes on the boards for ferals I just don't feel energized to be leveling him right now. So it is time to level my new death knight and old shaman. Kind of starting Northrend all over again.
Firestride Dec 7th 2008 8:14PM
How many toons you have at 80 now is a measure of both how hardcore you are now and how hardcore you were 6 months ago. I hit 70 5 days after Wrath came out, and my next highest toon is at 22. So my post-Wrath level is fairly hardcore (but not at all skilled!), but before Wrath I was quite casual.
Ryan Dec 7th 2008 8:14PM
More like an accurate representation of how many Insider readers are 80, imo.
