Ask WoW Insider: Getting rid of leftover gear
We're a bit late this week, but we've got a good question for you readers from Hylia, a Shadow Priest on Arthas. If you have a question you'd like to ask the readers of WoW Insider, don't forget to send it to ask@wow.com.I've got a question regarding the level 70 epics I've been pilling in my bank. Since I just hit 80 and I`m changing all my gear now, I don't know what to do. The thing is: I don't know if I should just sell my old gear or if I should disenchant it. I have over 20 of those purple shards too and I'm not sure they would sell well.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Hylia
It's a good question that lots of us are dealing with as we make our way up to 80: what do we do with the old level 70 epics? Personally, I've just been selling most of it -- I have kept a few sets, such as my Tier armor and a crafted set I made and socketed, but I'm not an Enchanter, and, like Hylia, I don't know how old shards would sell now anyway.
What have you been doing with the old gear? Vendor, disenchant, or is your bank packed with Gigantiques so you can keep it all?

I've been Disenchanting it... Voids sell for almost nothing now (5g each) but I have a feeling in a few months that the prismatic shards I can create from them will be selling for 8-10g each which would be more than what it vendors for... may not be the greatest approach, but its what I did. Some of the epics only sell for 5 or 6 gold anyway...

I really think they will be worth more later on, but not much. At the moment the best druid tanking enchant is either +35 agility or mongoose. Unless they add more enchants with a future patch the demand for those won't go down in the foreseeable future.

I can't sell my purples, it says the vendor doesn't want it. All I can do is destroy them.
Jason Dec 9th 2008 4:31PM
Tier X gear and items bought with Badges of Justice won't vendor, you have to DE or destroy it. Since my main isn't an Enchanter I've had to destroy a few items.

Mostly DE, sometimes destroy (some items [Dark Iron Smoking Pipe and the like] can't be disenchanted or sold, so it's the best thing to do.)
Void Crystals still sell decently on my server, since a lot of players are still using the +40 spell power enchant - +50 and +63 are just too expensive (Cosmic Essences - LESSER - are running 30g a pop)

I've been turning my BC enchanting mats into Scrolls of Enchant Weapon: Mongoose which still sell pretty well.
Horixon Dec 9th 2008 4:55PM
That is a really good idea. Many people are still buying and using Mongoose.

I'm a minimalist so it has been SHARD, SHARD, and SELL, SELL. I don't believe in keeping items that just take up space and won't be used again.
Its like keeping the underwear I won the little league championship in. It gets stale and moldy and needs to be taken out to the trash. I would give it to Goodwill if I could but those darn Soulbound messages keep popping up.
If you think you have plenty of room keep it for nastalgic sake. Otherwise just let the puppies go.

Disenchant old purples, split the void crystals, use those to ghetto enchant my new gear until I get the time/money/mats to skill up my old main's (new alt) enchanting to the new hawtness.

Got rid of my last piece of T6 last night. No reason to keep it in the bank, I've got plenty of fooling around gear if I want to goof off.

Man, I am such a pack rat when it comes to world of warcraft. I try my best to keep my bank clean and free of clutter, but it's hard when I hang on to so much stuff. I have level 60 epics, all my old fire resistance gear from Molten Core, hell, even my Bouquet of Scarlet Begonias from Redridge as well as my Dwarven Fishing Pole. I just can't bear to part with these unique items, no matter how irrelevant they are. I also have never sold or destroyed a trinket.
And this is just the stuff that's soulbound. I have a bank alt who holds every single gem I've ever found, as well as anything else that isn't tied down to my character that I could possibly, POTENTIALLY use at some unknown point in the future.
Yeah, I just use 16 slot bags, but it's served me well for the time being.

I would have loved to keep my old stuff, but I have absolutely no room for any of it. My poor pally is filled with tabards and clothing that she never uses... i really wish they would give us a costume slot so we could wear stuff that would normally be inappropriate to raid with. Like my brewfest gear.
Will Dec 9th 2008 4:24PM
Don't keep it, except for style/nostalgia or if it has some really unique effect like a transformation or ability not on any other gear. Level 80 gear will be such a higher item level in all aspects than that previous gear... give or take some sunwell stuff
If you are an enchanter or the equipment you have in your bank is still BoE, I'd recommend disenchanting it or getting someone else to do so as anyone powerleveling enchanting could still benefit from those shards.
Always good to look at the vendor sell price of the equipment, and how much their mats go for sale... auctioneer addon will show you what the items will disenchant to and tell you the average price its selling for on the AH.

I keep the weapons that mean something. Things like Cataclysm's Edge, the ZG and ZA 2h swords. Unique models and cool looking swords. The rest I've been pitching.
My warlock's got 3 empty bags, a shard bag, and 3 slots in the main bag for questing when they finally get around to making a warlock worth playing again.

I still have my Perdy (Perdition's Blade) from way back in the day when my guild was just starting to clear MC. Good times. Other stuff gets vendored. I've had to destroy most of my BC gear though, because it was pretty much all badge and token gear. Pretty annoying, actually.
Skadenfraude Dec 9th 2008 4:43PM
I got rid of all my Tier, PVP, Badge gear..
Weapons, oils, sharpening stones..
Gems, ore, cloth, foods...
Mounts, Vanity pets, bank bags and extra bag slots....
All thanks to my friendly neighborhood hacker.
Huzzah for someone else doing the Spring Cleaning - although it comes with a hefty fee of all my gold and all my alts! (Yes the jerk deleted them!)
IMO sell it all and buy an epic mount!
Remen Dec 9th 2008 4:46PM
I was never fortunate enough to hit endgame before the expansion however knowing my personality I would probably want to keep the sets that I worked so hard to earn. Even if I never use it there is a sense of pride in possessing top Tier gear.
Todd Dec 9th 2008 4:49PM
Difficult choices lie ahead. I'm not concerned so much with old gear as I am with vanity/quest related items. Tabards that cannot be restored (Argent Dawn, Protector, etc.). Summoning items like the Urn for Kara. Spare potions, spare food, spare consumables. Holiday items. I'm not the only one who still has these items banked for that rare occasion.
MechChef Dec 9th 2008 4:50PM
I've ditched most of the crap that was bulding up, like old blue/purple weapons I used to keep my weapon skills trained. My 100-badge gear has finally been replaced. Crappy I can't sell those though. I sorta wish the green-gear was as large of a boost as it was in BC. I actually don't think I replaced any of my old epics with greens, and I vedored most of the quest-blues.
Horixon Dec 9th 2008 4:56PM
I vendored everything I could, and destroyed what I couldn't. No point in wasting bag/bank space for things I won't wear again.
