Loatheb 2-manned by Die Uberspitzen
Am I surprised by this? No, not really. I definitely give these two huge props because fighting one boss for 3 hours would drive me insane, but Loatheb is not exactly challenging. In fact, I think bringing fewer people to the encounter would make it dramatically easier for a Healer. This isn't the first time Loatheb has been knocked down a peg by a hilariously small group, either. Back at level 60 when Naxxramas was a 40-man dungeon, Loatheb had been 5-manned by a Warrior, a Warlock, and 3 Shadow Priests.
Currently, Loatheb hits like a wuss. The tank hardly takes any physical damage at all. Almost all of the damage in the encounter comes from an AOE called Inevitable Doom. Shortly after combat starts, the boss starts casting it, and as time goes on he starts casting it in shorter intervals. Every 15 seconds is as fast as it can get, and it does about 4,000 damage. This becomes scary because of his Necrotic Aura. It makes all healing spells do 0 healing for 17 seconds, and then there is a 3 second opening where you can spam your heals before the aura returns.
When you have a full raid, the damage starts to build up. You get to a point where you can't heal everybody, and then the Healers start to worry. Panic sets in, everyone starts mashing their cooldowns and freaking out because the raid is about to die a very slow death. Except... not. Even when you have a bunch of deaths, it's pretty hard to wipe on this fight unless your mana disappears. Mostly, when you lose all of your DPS, you decide to just let yourselves die so you can start over and try again, so the tank doesn't take an hour to finish the boss off.
A tank and a Holy Paladin is a great pair to duo this fight, because of Bacon of Light and the Paladin's strong single target heals, and when the Necrotic Aura is up you have Sacred Shield to lend a hand. What's going to kill the two? Certainly not the physical damage, and definitely not the Inevitable Dooms every 15 seconds. Even if you took two of the dooms while under the effect of the Necrotic Aura, that's only 8,000 damage. What is that to someone in a raid at level 80? Not a lot. The tank will be taking physical damage as well, but not much, and raid tanks on the low end have 30,000 HP. The only way you could die here is from boredom.
Again, don't get me wrong. These guys doing this is awesome and not everyone would have the patience to do it, or the concentration to do that for three hours. I'm just saying it's not surprising that Loatheb was the one to get punked.
PS: Don't blame me for their music choices, kay? Thanks.
[Thanks, Miguel!]

3 hours on one boss?
That REEKS of no lifer.
Still, props to them.
For being no lifers.
elvendude Dec 9th 2008 7:15PM
I would happily spend three hours in one instance if I were given a 50% chance on an epic. So what if it's only one boss?
Kraf Dec 9th 2008 7:19PM
How is having alot of free time being called no lifers? I mean, hell, half the WoW population probably plays for atleast 3 hours on the weekends, ATLEAST (and don't flame me if my numbers are wrong) and so, they are bored on a weekend with alot of spare time...why not try something fun, exciting, and probably cause alot of excitement?
miked Dec 9th 2008 7:30PM
@elvendude
in all likelihood, the drops were probably sharded. the loot table is a lot more varied than plate for tanks and healers.
David Kotsonis Dec 9th 2008 8:55PM
They're only no-lifers if everyone else who raids for more than 3 hours at a stretch is, too.
Iwanttobeasleep Dec 9th 2008 11:39PM
It reeks of We Did This While Watching A Movie.
You reek of Desperate to Justify Himself.

Jealousy is an ugly thing to see. I wouldn't want to spend 3 hours on a single boss, but I do play for more than 3 hours a day so by your logic I'd be a no-lifer....yeah...riiight.
peagle Dec 10th 2008 12:20PM
People who play WoW or post on WoW websites accusing other people who happen to play differently or more extreme of having no lives, have massive insecurities about playing them game themselves.
You sir are, by any of your own negative spun definitions, a no lifer wow freak. Live with it nerd.
GrayElf Dec 10th 2008 9:38PM
Well said, peagle!
Err, hang on...does that mean me, too?? :-/
Stampy Dec 9th 2008 7:14PM
Bacon of Light? If I knew paladin had this spell, I think I'd have rolled one.
Ilnara Dec 10th 2008 1:50AM
It was a replacement for the more fun, but less popular Sausage of Light.
RipeTomatoe Dec 10th 2008 9:24AM
it is now one of the paladins best spells in their book. I loved it when I was holy.
Strudopi Dec 9th 2008 7:18PM
Bloodletter, you reek of jealousy.
Props to them.

I think it's great these folks found a way to do WoW _their_ way.
Ignoring the whole "life/no life" discussion you have to admit that nobody else has done this.
There's no achievement for it so the masses wouldn't even have considered it. I (being part of the aforementioned masses) certainly didn't.
Also: I wonder which classes we'll never see in one of these "1/2-manned boss" videos?

"Also: I wonder which classes we'll never see in one of these "1/2-manned boss" videos?"
My guess? Mage. When they go out of mana (and they will) they're useless. There is nothing mages can bring to 2-man that some other class couldn't, and the other class will most likely even bring some more utility.
Rogues seem to be other rare class in stuff like this, but there are some after all (rogue + healer onyxia etc)
What comes to soloing, protadins, DK:s and druids seem to go first. Any class with alot migitation and even the tiniest bit of selfhealing. Or the other way around, small migitation but big heals. Or something between. Healing seems to be mandatory anyways.
Soloing Onyxia was a fun fight with Enhancement shaman (15 min fight and 175g loot, i'd suggest you to go try if you're playing a class that might be able to do it), but please, tell me if you see a mage or rogue doing it.

I doubt you'd ever see a mage doing a one- or two-person boss kill. Too squishy, not enough mana regen, no heals.
Brad Dec 9th 2008 9:35PM
There's only one possibility that I can see of a mage having a chance at soloing one of these bosses. They would have to be arcane (mainly for slow) and kite the boss into oblivion. Another essential would be the Glyph of Evocation which would allow the mage to regen 60% of his health if he got hit. Other that that, it would still be very difficult to solo a raid boss with a mage.
Sentient Jan 4th 2009 10:21AM
This is awesome to read these "Mages are the most unlikely to duo or solo a raid boss" comments after just having watched a mage solo the military quarter. It makes my soul feel all warm and snug.
Velinath Jan 15th 2009 11:33PM
Die Uberspitzen also put a video up of a MAGE soloing the entire Military Quarter. Unfortunately Blizzard removed the method they used earlier this week.
Zan Dec 9th 2008 7:26PM
Maybe I just took this the wrong way, but I would be surprised if anyone did this for "fun" or gear, I would think that they were doing this to prove to Blizzard that the raid content is too easy. At least that is the message I took from this. If 2 people (no matter how well geared) could down a boss that was supposed to be for a 25 man raid (heroic mode right?), and even if it took them a long time to do it, I would consider that a design flaw in my book.
Though I don't want to get in a discussion on raid difficulty (mostly because I don't raid).
