The great hunter nerf of 2008
I quote Ghostcrawler: "Hunters of all specs, and particularly Beastmaster, are doing too much damage in PvE."At this point you can stop reading if you're a Hunter and just assume the worst. But if you want to see how you're getting nerfed to the ground, read on.
The rationale behind the changes is that Blizzard has been doing a lot of internal testing, along with the beta of WotLK, and has determined the other classes have not been able to keep up with the Hunter DPS output.
The list of nerfs is wide ranging. Volley nerfed by 30%. Steady Shot now gains 10% of Attack Power instead of 20%. Kindred Spirits has been nerfed by 25%. Readiness no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
The list of changes is not exhaustive. Ghostcrawler makes a point to say that these are just the ones they feel are ready for testing. He hopes to see them up on the PTR before they go live.
The full 14 point list of changes after the break.
- Steady Shot – now only gains 10% of attack power as damage (down from 20%).
- Volley – reduced the damage by about 30% for all ranks.
- Readiness - no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
- Deterrence – has been completely overhauled. It now allows you to deflect 100% of incoming melee or spell damage for 5 seconds, but prevents you from attacking while active. You still must be facing the attacker to deflect the damage (this is a limitation we are trying and might end up removing). 60 sec cooldown.
- Kill Shot – cooldown reduced to 15 sec (from 35 sec).
- Kindred Spirits – now only grants 3/6/9/12/15% pet damage.
- Serpent's Swiftness – now only grants 2/4/6/8/10% bonus attack speed to pet.
- All hunter pet abilities with a cooldown longer than 30 sec have been moved off the global cooldown.
- Growl - threat generation increased by 20% (same for Voidwalker Torment).
- Call of the Wild – now benefits only the hunter and his or her pet.
- Rake and Scorpid Poison – slightly nerfed to bring them into line with other pet abilities.
- Spirit Strike – reduced the period on the dot so it will work better with Longevity.
- Improved Tracking – now benefits damage to all included creature types as long as you are tracking one of them. You don't have to swap around what you are tracking as much.
- Aspect of the Wild – now raid-wide.

Looks like it'll be painful for Hunters in the not-too-distant future.
Kelly Dec 9th 2008 2:06PM
This is so annoying. Hunters were doing this kind of DPS in the beta weren't they? Why does Blizzard wait until Hunters get nice and accustomed to this before ripping the ground out beneath them? Annoying.

Need to learn the lesson from what they did to the Ret Pallies - they let you get used to it, claim it's okay and then WHAM! NERF NERF NERF!
Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised, but I am. Will they nerf druids next please? >:)

TO THE GROUND, BABY!

How about they nerf how much freakin noise BM pets make. I mean Comeon..... they thump louder than Fel Reaver!
Ryan Dec 9th 2008 4:22PM
Druids are doing too much dps?
Dominace Dec 9th 2008 4:37PM
Pretty sure with hunters they have constantly said that their DPS is too high, for weeks now. They never said it was 'fine' by any stretch of the imagination, if anything they have consistently been saying that they were looking at hunter DPS. Don't really see how is it much of a surprise.

You could question if those morons at Blizz even know what they want from the game, nerfing and chancing classes every month.

The major reason you're all getting hit hard now, as opposed to, say, during the Beta is that Blizzard originally predicted that due to their Talents Hunters would dominate the DPS charts early on, but as other classes gear improved they would rocket up to catch Hunters, if not accelerating past them at some point.
They were wrong, and now they must fix the monsters they created. Armed with stakes, torches, and an angry mob's worth of Warlocks, Rogues, and Mages, the Hunters have become the hunted.
Same thing happened to Retribution Paladins. There was a bug going on for a while that caused stats to stack by multiply equipping your weapon over and over again. Blizzard was hoping that the bug I mention was causing an inflation of Retribution Paladin DPS, but after they sorted it out Ret Burst and DPS in general was still too high. So they got the "nerf bat".
It wouldn't suprise me if you see Warlocks getting buffs while Titan's Grip Warriors and Frostfire Mages get the bat. Blizzard knows when it's your mechanics and not your skill that's topping the meters, and with the new design theory, that's not gonna happen anymore.

Well that's it. why don't they nerf the ridiculous pets that BM's can get like rhinos and the other noisy things and leave us alone.
Hunters are the underdogs of wow because of a few (not a lot) of bad hunters and it was the dps factor that gave hunters an edge and let them into groups. Take that away and hunters are back out in the cold again

Yes, this is a big nerf, but there's some buffs in there. If I'm calculating correctly, this will nerf our dps about 10-15%. It's not going to kill us to have to work for our 3K+ dps, is it?
I'm able to kill most anyone on damage excepting overgeared ret pallies in heroic Strat...and I'm still running around in questing blues while they're in some tier 7 and mostly purple.
I don't consider myself a bad player, but I think the ones that will be hurt most by this are those that get by simply being BM spec'd and hitting Bestial Wrath every 2 minutes or so while mashing the Steady Shot key. I guess I'll find out if I'm really as good as I've been led to believe since BC came out.

Oh boy, you guys broke out the mad baby pic. This is serious business. Haven't seen that guy since the honor carryover article.

The the ground, baby.
Muse Dec 10th 2008 4:05AM
Ground is quite soft these days. Many other classes and specs there to catch the falling hunters.
Heenk Dec 9th 2008 1:28PM
Oh my God this is devastating. Serpent's Swiftness! Nooooo :'(
Also, I worry if cutting the scaling of our primary damage ability in half won't hurt the weaker SV spec too much. It's already barely hanging in there.
Fluffywumpki of Dethecus Dec 9th 2008 1:31PM
This is a straight up BM nerf. Look over that list, the spec most affected will be Beast Mastery.
king0lag Dec 9th 2008 2:07PM
I agree, hunters are supposed to be over-power and working as intended.
rawrawrawr Dec 9th 2008 3:51PM
To quote Adam "I quote Ghostcrawler: "Hunters of all specs, and particularly Beastmaster, are doing too much damage in PvE.""
Who would have thought that after reading the first line of the article there would be nerfs, particularly to BM following?
Heilig Dec 9th 2008 4:06PM
I was in a group last night with a BM hunter whose CAT was doing 1200 DPS. That's a little absurd and definitely needs to be brought in line. And I play a hunter. With a cat.
Still kinda sucks that my two main toons are the current punching bags.
TO THE GROUND, BABY
Biff Dec 9th 2008 5:48PM
"Still kinda sucks that my two main toons are the current punching bags."
That's funny, being brought down to everyone else's level makes you a punching bag? What does that make the other classes?
I wish my Shaman would be super powerful for a couple months. Too bad I wasn't 60 yet with him when they were overpowered.
