The great hunter nerf of 2008
I quote Ghostcrawler: "Hunters of all specs, and particularly Beastmaster, are doing too much damage in PvE."At this point you can stop reading if you're a Hunter and just assume the worst. But if you want to see how you're getting nerfed to the ground, read on.
The rationale behind the changes is that Blizzard has been doing a lot of internal testing, along with the beta of WotLK, and has determined the other classes have not been able to keep up with the Hunter DPS output.
The list of nerfs is wide ranging. Volley nerfed by 30%. Steady Shot now gains 10% of Attack Power instead of 20%. Kindred Spirits has been nerfed by 25%. Readiness no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
The list of changes is not exhaustive. Ghostcrawler makes a point to say that these are just the ones they feel are ready for testing. He hopes to see them up on the PTR before they go live.
The full 14 point list of changes after the break.
- Steady Shot – now only gains 10% of attack power as damage (down from 20%).
- Volley – reduced the damage by about 30% for all ranks.
- Readiness - no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
- Deterrence – has been completely overhauled. It now allows you to deflect 100% of incoming melee or spell damage for 5 seconds, but prevents you from attacking while active. You still must be facing the attacker to deflect the damage (this is a limitation we are trying and might end up removing). 60 sec cooldown.
- Kill Shot – cooldown reduced to 15 sec (from 35 sec).
- Kindred Spirits – now only grants 3/6/9/12/15% pet damage.
- Serpent's Swiftness – now only grants 2/4/6/8/10% bonus attack speed to pet.
- All hunter pet abilities with a cooldown longer than 30 sec have been moved off the global cooldown.
- Growl - threat generation increased by 20% (same for Voidwalker Torment).
- Call of the Wild – now benefits only the hunter and his or her pet.
- Rake and Scorpid Poison – slightly nerfed to bring them into line with other pet abilities.
- Spirit Strike – reduced the period on the dot so it will work better with Longevity.
- Improved Tracking – now benefits damage to all included creature types as long as you are tracking one of them. You don't have to swap around what you are tracking as much.
- Aspect of the Wild – now raid-wide.

Well, if you qualify someone who can top DPS chart with only 10% of his damage done by it's pet, yes I am a huntard! lol
My personnal view of huntards are unfortunatly centered around Beast Masters (not ALL of them)
But the ones that are sending pet in, popping Bestial Wrath and then Auto Attack.
They do mid-range DPS, their pet being 40-50% of their personnal damage. They don't play hunters, they play a puppet show where it's a 1 "beast" deal. And since most of these huntards doesn't know how to really play, their pets will eventually die, and then they will complain that the boss is too hard and it's impossible for hunters to be efficient against it.
If you've felt hurt by my comment, it might be that you're in this category... but I don't think so... you are prolly a good hunter who just likes the BM spec. I'm just not in that category. Call me a ranger maybe, but I just like the fact I can smash faces with my Bazooka spec(Explosive shot). And yes, Ranger, because I decided to skip all melee/trap ability I could, I'm not a wanna be rogue lol.

I am a BM but that BM guy is pretty ridiculous. Survival requires you to actually run around and do stuff. Lay traps, etc - use every part of your class. That's why it's so fun to play.
BMs send pets in, spam steady shot macro. Pet dies, revive it, steady shot some more. Most probably have that AutoHot Key script for the macro so their fingers don't get sore.
Don't pretend you do anything else. BMs are cruise control.

If you are a good hunter, your pet doesn't die, and you run around with traps anyway, because it's an important class mechanic. You don't shut out a chunk of utility or DPS just because you aren't spec'd specifically for it... that's just stupid, and a waste of everyone's time. Both of you need to soak your heads, they look a tad swollen from here, and reconsider what it means to be a "hunter."

Thats one thing that has really pissed me off about WoW for a long time now.....people thing that just because they arent specced a certain way, that they should totally ignore the abilities that they arent specced into....im not saying everyone does it, but a lot do....
Secondly, I am BM and my pet never dies, i just make sure my HoT is up, and with the new minor gliph that makes my Hot make my pet happier, its a double bonus.......im not too concerned about the hunter nerfs, you still get a lot of bonuses from BM spec, and you still get to tame the coolest pets in the game (Chimera FTW)
Another thing, this whole "your class if for retards" has got to stop, if someone wants to play a class its their own choice, and they did pay for the game right, so to all those saying that "to include a hunter in a raid is charity" or " the less interested of a couple who plays wow, plays a hunter" STFU and GTFO, dont get me wrong, i know our fighting style is cruise controll, mark, sick pet, auto fire, hell id love to do more, but i would burn up all of my mana, and have to drink twice as often......

@james,
You are absolutely correct. I am a balance druid for leveling, but can easily heal any 5 man. When I do get to 80, I will go resto for endgame healing. Warriors who think they can't tank unless they are protection obviously didn't see Blizzard's comments that all tanking trees should be able to tank. All hunters trap as well. All priests can heal 5 mans, elemental shaman and balance druids can heal in a pinch. I have never seen a retadin tank, though I did have one heal me in Heroic Mech after the patch in healing gear and with a high crit chance to proc sheath of light. Too many people never understand what their class can and cant do because we see certain trees as the tanking/healing/dps trees. Though they are intended to allow you to specialize in certain aspects of your class, they rarely restrict you the way so many players seem to think they do.
@the rest of you,
BM can be cruise control, but that's only if you let it be. Back before wrath if a druid started his hot and the warrior didnt thunderclap soon enough to grab the entire pull, a hunter's pet could at least save the healer and by the group the few seconds it needed. I have no idea how many times I used my pet (or even my voidwalker) in MGT on the pure energy adds. I tank on a paladin, and heal with a druid and have several high end toons, and I will admit that hunters can be on cruise control, but they dont have to be. Your pet, like your traps, and every other classes utility is what you make of it. All I'm saying is don't forsake the importance of your pet when it is a class defining mechanic.

I'm sad that the buff to growl wasn't greater, and that there was no mention of reducing the imbalance between gorillas and other pets. It makes me wonder if they might consider that pets can hold aggro well based entirely on how well gorillas perform.
Benito Dec 9th 2008 1:34PM
Sorry to say this, but it was about time.
greg Dec 9th 2008 1:33PM
It's not all that bad. There are a few buffs in there, mostly for PvP.
Nodaba Dec 9th 2008 1:34PM
While I understand every class hates getting nerfed, I kind of saw this coming. In all the raids I've been in, all the hunters are at teh top of the charts. Are these hunters geared up the wazoo? No. In fact, most of the time the at or below the rest of the raid. Even then , they're usually 10-20% above the rest of the DPS. It's pretty ridiculous.
I just hope these nerfs don't bring them BELOW everyone. I like having hunters destroy everything in site, even if they do it jsut a little bit less.

So you don't take damage for 5 seconds, but you can't attacker your attacker, but you have to face your attacker.....How and when would this be used? Can you bandage? That's the only thing I can think of.
Saelorn Dec 9th 2008 1:45PM
It will buy you five seconds with which you might get healed or in which the tank can grab things off of you. Solo, it only gets you five seconds where your pet might be able to save you.
gundamxzero Dec 9th 2008 1:46PM
Easy, let all the melee shit their own pants while they damage themselves, snare themselves etc. Then you just pop a disengage fly away and blow them up.
Kermittheorc Dec 9th 2008 1:48PM
Good points. My BM hunter is 73 and I believe we put out a lot of damage. I've had an easier time soloing. I suppose Deterrance change isn't so bad, as long as you can bandage and lay a trap.
Kermittheorc Dec 9th 2008 1:49PM
I meant to say I 'haven't' had an easier time soloing. Oops.
Kia Dec 9th 2008 1:39PM
Ouch, that sounds harsh. Thank god hunters are one of the few classes I don't like a bit. xD
Abrazama Dec 9th 2008 1:45PM
Seconded.
Arktic Dec 9th 2008 1:40PM
As a Paladin, I believe these changes should be hotfixed in immediately and we can do the required testing on the live realms. Seems reasonable to stick with tradition.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Dec 9th 2008 2:33PM
Lol!
Agreed.
