The great hunter nerf of 2008
I quote Ghostcrawler: "Hunters of all specs, and particularly Beastmaster, are doing too much damage in PvE."At this point you can stop reading if you're a Hunter and just assume the worst. But if you want to see how you're getting nerfed to the ground, read on.
The rationale behind the changes is that Blizzard has been doing a lot of internal testing, along with the beta of WotLK, and has determined the other classes have not been able to keep up with the Hunter DPS output.
The list of nerfs is wide ranging. Volley nerfed by 30%. Steady Shot now gains 10% of Attack Power instead of 20%. Kindred Spirits has been nerfed by 25%. Readiness no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
The list of changes is not exhaustive. Ghostcrawler makes a point to say that these are just the ones they feel are ready for testing. He hopes to see them up on the PTR before they go live.
The full 14 point list of changes after the break.
- Steady Shot – now only gains 10% of attack power as damage (down from 20%).
- Volley – reduced the damage by about 30% for all ranks.
- Readiness - no longer affects the cooldown of Bestial Wrath.
- Deterrence – has been completely overhauled. It now allows you to deflect 100% of incoming melee or spell damage for 5 seconds, but prevents you from attacking while active. You still must be facing the attacker to deflect the damage (this is a limitation we are trying and might end up removing). 60 sec cooldown.
- Kill Shot – cooldown reduced to 15 sec (from 35 sec).
- Kindred Spirits – now only grants 3/6/9/12/15% pet damage.
- Serpent's Swiftness – now only grants 2/4/6/8/10% bonus attack speed to pet.
- All hunter pet abilities with a cooldown longer than 30 sec have been moved off the global cooldown.
- Growl - threat generation increased by 20% (same for Voidwalker Torment).
- Call of the Wild – now benefits only the hunter and his or her pet.
- Rake and Scorpid Poison – slightly nerfed to bring them into line with other pet abilities.
- Spirit Strike – reduced the period on the dot so it will work better with Longevity.
- Improved Tracking – now benefits damage to all included creature types as long as you are tracking one of them. You don't have to swap around what you are tracking as much.
- Aspect of the Wild – now raid-wide.

This is needed. I'm new lvl 80 (non-geared) hunter and I am top dmg in most heroic runs that I do. That is without pet damage. If you add in my pet dmg, I am way, way above any other DPS classes.
Ran Naxx two nights ago, and a hunter in my group out-damaged the mind-controlled adds on the final boss in the military ward by over 200k.
Rouges need to be top DPS because of the lack of armor. With so many bosses being more AoE centric, if a rouge doesn't have that dmg boost on hunters then it doesn't make sense as hunters take the trade off for survivability.
Actually, it’s kind of cool to hear that Blizzard is really watching the game rather than just responding to QQ.

Just be thankful that they're testing it on the PTR. If you were paladins, this stuff would have been hotfixed this morning!

and i was already have a bad day at work...
as SS is the backbone of any pewpew rotation, losing this 10% of ap is gonna hurt
although exotic pets, freezing arrow, new toys that give us a glimpse of hope for pvp - we still got a lot to be happy for
or maybe i'm clutchin' for a bright side.......
top of the charts was fun while it lasted, although as soon as my devilsaur could independently move his way to 3rd dps spot i thought there might be some change coming

Yeah, that's what I saw as well. No one likes getting hit by the nerf bat, but - as I felt when I was leveling a ret pally and 3.0 came in - sometimes you just realize that you are a little OP, and need to be brought down a notch. Hopefully this will keep Hunters up with Mages, something else will bring Rogues up to the top, and along with Warlocks, all the pure DPS can get along in peace and quite.

30% reduction in Volley DPS = one less talent to waste points on.
/removes volley from action bar.
Well Mages, looks like your on your own with AoE'ing in raids. Let us know how that turns out!
Battery H Dec 9th 2008 2:26PM
Isn't that the truth. And, no complaining from the mages that my pet can't off tank when you aggro someone by spamming fireballs.
Microtonal Dec 9th 2008 3:46PM
The Volley nerf is my only problem with any of this. Even the SS nerf I can live with, but with 3.0.2 we were finally given an AoE that wasn't a complete waste of time, mana and action bar slots, and then they have to go and make it useless again.
I literally NEVER used Volley before 3.0.2 because it did crap for damage. And if this nerf goes in, I'll go right back to never using it.

Hunters in raids were just using volley on all the trash, without variation. If your class can be played by a drinking bird(and top DPS charts by 30% while doing it) because one skill is overwhelmingly overpowered, you can bet it's going to be nerfed.
I'm sorry if you liked it, but it was clearly broken.
Sinthar Dec 11th 2008 10:50AM
Dont worry mate- been running without a hunter for a while now - as an arc/frost mage i can safely say its nps mate. Biggest problem is all the damage numbers and spell effects give my (brand new) asus graphics card a bit of a work out, plus it gives the tank a heart attack when i pull 1/2 the pack (til i IB or MI that is). Least it wakes the tank up a bit :)
Btw sorry to hear of all the nurfs - i think its a LOT of change - and maybe too much - hope its actually looked at and REALLY ballanced in relation to other dps classes correctly - rather than just nurfed to death.
Max Dec 9th 2008 2:22PM
That's what you get for rolling a huntard.
I was sick of min/maxing to the highest degree, working extremely hard to get my dps up, while a lazy hunter just dropped by and owned my face on the meters.
marsh Dec 9th 2008 1:48PM
Most of the hunters in my guild switched to other classes already. This is unlikely to make them (us) reconsider going back to play our hunters.

I did a 5-man the other day where the hunter did an overall 2700 DPS, while me and the other DPSer did about 1400. I'm sure gear accounts a lot of difference in DPS, but not to that extent. This is (obviously) a needed change, and hunters shouldn't be upset by it.
Kordrim Dec 9th 2008 2:04PM
L2P n00b. Have you had any other hallucinations lately? If so, you might need professional help.
Kelly Dec 9th 2008 3:08PM
Why are you crying? "omg some hunter did massive dps and helped make a 5 man much more easily, the must be nerfed."
How about you turn to something else other than WoW to validate your self worth?
Vic Viper Dec 9th 2008 1:54PM
only in PVE, anyone in PVP will simply Go Around N Kill you :3
Eric Dec 9th 2008 1:45PM
The only really bad looking change that will ruin hunters forever until we get used to it is seeming to be steady shot since everyone uses it. And volley was somewhat OP, so that I suppose deserves it. Hope it doesn't ruin AoE grinding with Magilla the Gorilladin.
Radioted Dec 9th 2008 1:48PM
Well, I guess this means no more solo-ing elites, then.
Crap!
Eldinne Dec 9th 2008 1:59PM
lol well looks like its not to bad for MM spec's sucks about rake, but that 15sec cool down for kill shot is going to make it more useful
gundamxzero Dec 9th 2008 1:48PM
So Glad I do not raid as BM, only thing that really affects me is the SS 10% reduct. Now I have a few more points that I dont need to waste on volley. Overall my damage wont be completely nerfed and on boss fights now I will be able to put in way more kill shots (my kill shots hit for 10k+)
Sakinah Dec 9th 2008 1:50PM
MM for the win. Aside from teh volley nerf, I should still do all right. Hooray that I didn't want to do BM because everyone else did it!
