The Queue: Bloody rare

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft.
We had no maintenance today, what a pleasant surprise! Rolling Restart Tuesdays are always a nice breath of fresh air. Or wait, was that what regular maintenance Tuesdays are for? Hmm. I can't keep this 'fresh air' concept straight at all so let's just start on the Q&A.

Can you explain exactly how rare spawns in Northrend work? I've heard multiple theories - from "Every 20 or so hours for spawn," to "Only one rare mob is alive at a time, and the next one doesn't spawn until that one dies," etc.
They don't all work the same. Some of the are on a timer, like you said. Some of them have a cooldown and a shared spawn. Others are just rare and have something like an 0.00005% chance to spawn when you kill other things. That last number there was completely made up to get the point across, by the way. Don't take it as fact.
The easiest thing to do is just look up each specific rare spawn you're chasing. Use Wowhead, Wowwiki, whatever you need to find the info you're looking for. There's really no hard rule as to how they all work, they vary.

As a Fury Warrior dual-wielding 2-handers thanks to Titan's Grip, what is my hitcap? I do have Precision which gives me a 3% chance to hit bonus. I haven't been able to find definitive numbers about what my hit cap will be at level 80. Thanks for the help!
The Fury Warrior hitcap is 14%, and the 3% from Precision brings it down to 11% for your yellow damage. In terms of hit rating, that'd be 361 rating. The white damage hit cap is higher due to the off-hand penalty of dual-wielding, but you don't even need to worry about it. Your white damage will be good enough to keep up your rage generation, and most of your Titan's Grip DPS will come from your special attacks.
361 is your magic number.

Hey, I was wondering where the best places to farm Eternals are?
If your faction owns Wintergrasp and you're willing to brave the PvP, it rules for Eternal farming. Every single kind of Eternal can be acquired there when you own the zone. It's pretty good inspiration to fight there, I think. Rally your friends and jump into the battle!
Beyond that? Keep an eye on the site, we'll have something more in-depth really soon. Like, super duper soon.
Chickamauga asked...
Why is it that items received from Darkwater Clams don't stack? After slaughtering Oracles for Wolverines! rep, all my bags are full. Single pieces of clam meat, everywhere. Plus the occasional pearl. Is there a simple macro or interface setting to stack it all up?
This is something that started happening after last Tuesday's maintenance I believe, so I'm guessing it was an 'oops' introduced by a hotfix somewhere else. You can't flip the On and Off switch on clam meat stacking in your UI or anything. I don't think there's a macro to automatically stack items either, though I could be wrong on that bit. I'm not very creative with my macros. I'm sure this is something they'll fix in the next patch though, so just grin and bear it for now and don't fret too much. It just means you should leave the poor gorlocs alone!

Noooez! They nerf clam meat!
In related news, please move honor among thieves to Combat spec and keep it bugged.
Dexton Dec 9th 2008 11:21AM
And killing spree to assassination while you are at it.
eXistinZ Dec 9th 2008 12:03PM
arkinventory has a stack button
I used it religiously

Killing Spree is underrated. It can be very useful in the right situation, (btw: if you're using it for PvP, you're doing it wrong).

As a Titan's Grip Warrior, I have to point out a slight inaccuracy in what you said. I do agree that it would be stupid to try to reach the white hit hit cap, but saying that most of our dps comes from specials is only half-true. White damage accounts for the largest % of damage. It's usually between 30-40% of total damage. If you factor in deep wounds, then theres no way Special attacks are most of our damage. If someone doesn't have deep wounds, then all of their Special attacks combined might be more than half.
Personally I've gotten my hit back up to 300, and I still have a long way to go as far as getting better gear. But at 300, I do enough damage (if there is such a thing!), and rarely miss. Thats the key. missing rarely. missing never would cost other valuable stats like +crit.
Aim for 300 as a titans grip warrior at lvl 80, and you'll notice great returns. I suspect it will get better when I get up around 350, which is my target.

religiously?
As in "Oh God, please don't let a patch screw this add on up?" ;-)
I did not know they could stack individual items

Honor Among Thieves is fine in Subtlety, thank you very much. It's there to provide raid utility for our spec.
It used to work great.
I've only been soloing in Northrend. How is it bugged?
Roto Dec 9th 2008 11:08AM
The clam meat not stacking is to balance the overpowered ability to stack clams.

Apparently Blizzard is giving something to the hardcore clam farming population.
Chuck Dec 9th 2008 11:13AM
The clam meat stacks it just doesn't do it automatically. I had the same issue last night...
Culhag Dec 9th 2008 11:41AM
That's what I found too.

What is the magic number for feral druids and hit cap? Also, which stats are best for a feral bear tank?
Cyrus Dec 9th 2008 12:40PM
As for hit rating, the cap for druids is 295. There's a lot at wowwiki.com about this; just search for "hit rating" to get more detail than you need. For a feral druid, though, assuming no dranei in your group and assuming that you're attacking a boss or any target three levels higher than you, 295 is the cap.
As for other stats, I had a question of my own. How much expertise is enough/too much for a tank in PvE? It seems like there's a ton of expertise on tanking gear without even looking for it, and a decent amount on dps gear too. At what point does it become wasted? (I checked wowwiki on this myself, but I didn't see any consensus.) For that matter, how important is it as a mitigation stat? I know that expertise means landing more hits means generating more aggro, but does preventing your attacks from being parried really reduce damage taken by that much?
Tatko Dec 10th 2008 12:47AM
I don't think you can consider expertise a damage-reduction stat, but rather a risk-reduction stat. The problem with parried attacks isn't that the boss will do more damage in the course of the encounter, but that he'll damage the tank too quickly for healers to react.

As a druid I have heard about our feral staves losing their class specific attack power bonus. In the shifting perspective column today Allison noted that this will change the dps for these weapons. What is this change going to look like and how do I read items with that on now in consideration for later?
On a totally different note, tailoring has some recipes only open upon completing achievements such as the Loremaster of Northrend and Dungeonmaster of Northrend. Are there any other recipes tied to achievements for tailoring, I have heard rumours surrounding many different achievements but can only find validity in the two I referred to.
Thanks

The item points for FAP have always been pulled from the DPS item points. Rather than having FAP, the baseline DPS of the weapon will increase. Theoretically, all weapons of the same class and iLvl should be about the same DPS...so if you want to compare them, look up the iLvl on wowhead or a similar source.
However, this change is by no means imminent, so if a class in your party would upgrade to that weapon immediately, I would probably recommend holding off on rolling for anything until you are the only one that needs it or the change is live.

Not all heroic dungeons are created equal. I had seen lists with relative difficulty of BC heroics. Has anyone compiled such a list for Wrath?
Kanuris Dec 9th 2008 10:37PM
Heres a start:
1) Heroic Halls of Lightning. Loken is so much of a git i went and used my first 8 titansteel bars making that 2h epic mace.

I found eternal lifes are best farmed in Sholazar from the flower mobs just south east of the venture co camp. Great drop rate

If my Death Knight's pet kills a mob before I tag it, I can't loot it. Any report on this getting fixed?
