BigRedKitty: It's hunter-pinata time, part II
Admit it, you Beast Mastery hunters. We're destroying the damage meters, aren't we. Crushing them into oblivion. It's not even close. We do need our class throttled down, and we all knew it was inevitable. When hunter-pets are out-DPSing warlocks, things need a-tweakin'.
But the manner in which it's done is massively important!
In the past, especially in the beta, Blizzard has operated under the principal of: Over-Do, Then Correct.
When Ret Pally DPS was addressed in the WotLK beta, they were way overpowered, and then corrected to be more in balance with the rest of the game. Since people had experience with paladins, they loved the beta, but loathed the correction, especially when the correction was slammed in their face with a laugh, skip, and jump by the lead GM.
When Death Knight DPS was introduced in the beta, they were way overpowered, and then corrected to be more in balance with the rest of the game. But since nobody had really played a DK previously, and a GM in full battle cry didn't use a megaphone to announce the adjustments, people accepted the final numbers with a knowing nod of the head.
Hunters have been so poor at arenas for so long that we kind of feel entitled to hog the top of the damage meters, especially since Arena Season Five is coming and we still have a borked Survivalist tree and our major limitations in arenas still haven't been addressed.
But now we've got a huge quantity of hunters who just love their pets and the tremendous damage they can do in PvE being told that, after so long of having our pets be meaningless in end-game raiding, we're going to have them swatted down. And it was done in one great big festering, sweltering dump of a blue-post, with no deftness at all.
This is not the way the governor of Ohio (pop. 11.5 million) would do it.
Here's what should've been said:
"Greetings hunters! Yes it's been a long time since I've popped up on your boards, and nobody is more sorry about that than I am. We've been doing a ton of work getting everything going, making sure BRK doesn't crash any more servers, and other logistical operations to provide you with the best playing experience possible. I'll do more to stop by and mingle in the future, I promise.
"So I come bearing some interesting news. It is very apparent that you guys are tearing up the content and raid bosses like nobody else. You're doing great! Unfortunately, you're doing a little too great. The mechanics that we observed in the beta just aren't panning out on the live servers as we expected. Time is always the enemy, and in this case, we shipped you guys a bit of an over-powered product.
"If you're a student of our engineering theology, you know that we like to make as few changes to classes as possible. That is, we'd prefer to make two shifts in class design as opposed to three or four. The fewer updates that modify your class-expectations, the better it is for you and us.
"To accomplish this, we usually over-power any changes we make, and then come back and tweak the final result to get the proper final adjustment we're searching for. It's like ripping the band-aid off all at once, then putting a nice, soothing creme on afterwords, as opposed to tearing the band-aid off slowly, ripping each arm hair out one by one, never damaging the skin, but putting you through a lengthy, agonizing hair-tearing process.
"We know approximately how much of a decrease in overall DPS we want to give the hunter class, specifically the Beast Mastery tree. But instead of making lots of little patches with lots of little cuts, we're going to do one big patch that just might seems like we're doing too much. Relax, this is on purpose. Once we see how far down we take you, it's very easy for us, and pleasing for you, to ramp you back up to the position you should be.
"Having said that, we're going to have a Public Test Realm opened so you can all see just what kind of adjustments we're looking at testing. Notice I said 'testing'. We need to see which of these changes we're going to keep, which work well with the other classes, and which we're not happy with. This requires time to sort all the data out, which is why we have the PTR-process.
"You'll all be asked to participate in the PTR and provide as much feedback as you can. Feedback is not "ZOMGBBQ THIS SUX!" Feedback is quantitative analysis of the changes, presented in a logical and respectful format. As much as you desire quality information from us, we need quality feedback from you.
"Here is a list of the changes we're going to be testing. Remember, not all of them are guaranteed to make it to live; this is just an opportunity to see how the hunter-class responds to these changes. Thank you for your time. Ghostcrawler, lover of hunters everywhere."
Diplomacy. Why is it taking Blizzard so long for them to realize that a large majority of the flak they receive isn't because of what they do, but how they present it?
Now then, as for the nerf-bomb itself, let's point our peepers at the facts of the case and analyze, as best we can in this short space, just what the heck our future as hunters may look like.

I used to like you BRK.
Ven Dec 10th 2008 1:35PM
I agree
Your last 4-5 post BRK have been terrible, this one chief among them. You'd be well advised to stick to the old videos of pet types and such, and stay away from commentary altogether.
My main is a Ret Pally, and though I was sad to get nerfed, I had no probs with hos the nerfs were communicated and I have yet to see or meet a paladin that did.

Hey Blizz, here's a novel idea: How about you ACTUALLY separate the PVP content with PVE content, so when you "tried to balance" one end of the spectrum you wouldn't screwed it up for us on the other end?! Hunter PVE DPS rank too high? fine! balance it! just don't freakin' make a cut across the board that would run whatever we have left in the arena and battleground straight into Hades? i'm predicting they're taking away our ranged and replace it with slingshot in near future....

I have one thing to say... OMFG! Are you for real? Diplomacy in a video game. Just be happy they tell you at all, it's a game, and one of the people designing the game mechanics is coming out to tell you something. I read your BS italics "what he should have said" crap and just laughed. If I saw a video game designer say that I think I'd call blizzard and tell them he's in the wrong career. All they need to do is throw all those bulleted nerfs they are throwing in the game in the patch notes and everything is good. You should be happy your getting a heads up and that these guys are even reading what we write. I'm positive it's not there job to, it's there job to design the game and they are doing a good job of that. Let them tell you about changes anyway they feel fit. At least they are telling you.

I disagree. That was long-winded, and un-necessarily bloated.d Is the population really that insecure that they need everything handed to them with a bouquet of roses? C'mon. The hunters that are whining need to get their heads out of their butts and add a little perspective to their lives. There are plenty of us that play hunters that competely understand WHY it is being done, and don't need thm to hold our hand while they smack us with the batterang.

BRK, you just lost a fan.
I check your blog multiple times a day, but I'm not so sure I'm going to be continuing that practice.
Your entire post comes off as a huge whine fest. Who cares how they told you? One of Blizzard's long time traditions is how they interact one a personal level with their customers. You're asking that they turn into professional grief counselors.
When someone is blunt with you, whether you like it or not, at least they are being completely up front with you. The only way to "soften the blow" is to essentially lie to you or tell you it won't be as bad as they are actually going to make it. Furthermore, they could have spouted some BS about taking responses into account, but instead they chose the most honest route: they stated that the decision was essentially done and that no good would come from bitterly complaining. I'm perfectly fine with the latter approach, at least then I know they are not jerking me around.
Anyhow, just mark me down as Hugely Disappointed in BigRedKitty.
Sciurus Dec 10th 2008 10:28AM
What a bunch of drivel! I have a suspicion that it does not matter in the least how Blizz presented this information to you, your response would have been exactly the same. Time to step back and get a little perspective here Daniel.
D-Rider Dec 10th 2008 10:10AM
I've now read 2 posts, including an 8 paragraph proposed wording, without yet seeing a single detail of the coming nerf. If this is how you propose Blizz communicate with us, I pass. Content free text is a waste of time.
Perhaps hey could be more diplmatic (and perhaps not, since you still at this point haven't told us anything about what was said), but pages of text that boil down to "hunters are going to be nerfed" just smacks of "maybe if the intro is long enough they won't read it so they won't be mad at us."
Forboda Dec 10th 2008 11:24AM
Right on BRK. Blizzard needs find a balance between lying spin-doctoring and being overly blunt. The content of some messages will always bother some folks, but the format and delivery doesn't have to add to the pain. In some cases, it can help alleviate it some.
It almost sounds like you're angling for a job . . .
Danca Dec 10th 2008 10:41AM
Dear Daniel Howell,
Again you prove your worthlessness as an editor.
Please go back to school.
JD Dec 10th 2008 10:44AM
So you want the developers to go back to hiding behind PR people? That's -better-? Noncommittal answers and silence?
Offering communication from the developers - and a window into their thinking - is a courtesy and an experiment from Blizzard. It'll be a shame if they stop because people just can't handle it.
Your overall message is pretty childish and patronizing, and amounts to just shooting the messenger.
Gauje Dec 10th 2008 10:46AM
Yeah, I have to agree with the majority of user comments here. I for one prefer Blizzard be open and upfront about upcoming game changes. I get enough PR bull fed to me through the media already, I don't need to sift through it to find about upcoming changes.
Generally it really annoys me when people assume WoW players don't have a life, but it's this simple: if you get so worked up over class changes in this game that it causes you stress, you need to do something else with your life to gain a little perspective. If you can't appreciate that the lead class designer has a sense of humor, and thus have to fly off the handle when he says something like "to the ground, baby" you need to grow up.
Liq Dec 10th 2008 10:52AM
Is it April? Is this for real? Man wowinsider is going down hill. Everytime a friend tells me I need to check something out on this site, it is a blogger getting rightfully humiliated for their ridiculous post. This whole thing comes out as:
"Wwwwwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, I got nerfed, let me find the most completely inane thing to complain about so I can vent about it in my blog."
Blizzard should send you a personal email next time you get nerfed and it should say:
"Dear person who takes this game way to seriously,
You're getting nerfed, suck it."
Because THAT, in fact, is ALL they owe you. Can you tell me where you got that undeserved sense of entitlement? I still have Christmas shopping to do.
Hellsbellboy Dec 10th 2008 11:07AM
I have to agree.. this is a whine feast.. and after the way YOU and the rest of the community came off about the Ret paladin nerfs I could care less about you hunters. Nerf them to the ground.. I'm tired of the hunters with their big loud pets running around.. Nerf Nerf Nerf
ravenfrost Dec 12th 2008 5:06AM
For the longest time hunters been needing a nerf if u say that hunters were low in pvp u must have sucked as a hunter there the most played class and the most noobist to learn so quit ur whining take ur nerf like a champ and stfu everyclass goes thru it its now ur turn so deal with it. and BRK your columns suck everything ive read is nothing but qq just stfu already.
Durango Dec 10th 2008 3:26PM
If this were said on wow's forums you would see a repeat as such.

Blizzard developers are indeed cowards, which is why they have to ban players who criticize them while they allow themselves the freedom to insult and abuse players by calling them "whiners," "huntards" and "terrorists," all said by GC or other developers on the hunter threads.
They also don't have the guts to come here and respond to anyone on a forum they don't control, and where they can't delete any comment that refutes their stupidity or asshatedness.
Lowlight Dec 10th 2008 5:23PM
The Governor of OHIO needs to do a better job of keeping every last person in his state from moving to the Carolinas. And he needs to do something NOW, because we're sick of them. Especially the ones who stay and don't register their tags to avoid paying taxes.
So, you know, not a good example to use there.
Dahras Dec 11th 2008 8:03AM
Ummm... I don't really see a problem with his post. I mean really. All he said that they were gonna overreact on the test realms (and that they RECOGNIZE that its too much of a nerf) and then start inching dps back up so that it isn't a steady trickle of nerfs over time. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.
I mean, I'm a ret pally (since the days of OP Seal of the Crusader, yeah that long, I bet most people here don't remember that) and this is a way better solution than what they did to us.
Papuchon Dec 12th 2008 2:22PM
I really think they do this on purpose, they can't be that stupid.
