Character Re-Customization available for a small fee [UPDATED]
The WoW launcher was updated this morning, and just now what was behind that curtain was revealed: Character Re-Customization. What does that mean? In short, for a fee of $15, you can rebuild your character, with some restrictions. You can change your gender, face, skin, hair, and name, but not your race or class. You can do hair in-game already via the barbershop, so I imagine the ability to do those via this service is just for convenience. The real draw is the gender and face options.Don't want to play your Female Undead Warlock anymore because they move funny? It's okay, turn them into a way awesome Male Undead Warlock. Sick of looking at your Male Draenei? Try out something more... pleasing to the eyes. This is a feature people have been asking for since WoW launched, so I'm surprised it took so long for it to happen. If you're taking full advantage of the feature, it's really not a bad deal considering a paid name change is $10. For an extra $15, you can more or less have a new character. Well, sort of.
The first questions that I saw come up about this is the griefability, and the FAQ handled it pretty well. What if a Ninja steals your lewts, then goes and changes their identity? Well, as long as they're on your ignore list (or friends list) they can't really escape. When their name changes, those lists will be updated as well.
The odd restriction I see is Race, because I think that's one of the biggest things people wanted from this anyway. I can understand why they wouldn't want to do that, though. Your race would be the new Flavor of the Month deal. Why? Racials. You would have raiders going Draenei for the Hit aura, or PvPers respeccing their race to whatever the best PvP racial is that arena season. My fellow RPers, let's be honest. How many people on your server would be swapping to Draenei for a few months for some bizarre demon posession and/or impregnation storyline, then going back to Human or Night Elf whatever later. It would be a lot of people.
This would very quickly change from something fun to something you'd feel like you're forced to spend good money on regularly. I don't think they want that. I don't really see a problem with this service at all, I think they took a pretty classy approach to it all.
Update: It seems they're still trying to get a few bits and pieces of this working right, so I'd wait awhile before trying it out.
[Thank you to all that sent us tips about this!]

Except for the fact that the Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity has been part of Role-playing Games since the Seventies. Yes, that's right. It pre-dates WOW.
Ergo, I conclude that role-playing is entirely supportive of the concept of changing the gender of a character.

Great, but I'm disappointed that we can't change race - at least on the same faction.
I rolled a draenei 67 warrior then draenei were flavour of the month and to try out the warrior class - and now prot warrior is my fave class spec in the game.
But now that Draenei they're looking like last year's model and nothing much to do with Wrath at all, I really regret not rolling a human warrior but am crying tears of frustration of having to level my 28 human warrior all the way to 68 - I don't know if I can stand it, especially as I have x5 characters at 60+ so I'm utterly sick of 20-58 vanilla WoW and Outland is rapidly getting tiresome too...

I'd also like to add that $15 or whatever it is in the UK where I live seems a lot given that a fair bit of customization is already in the game for free.
If I've invested a lot of time in a character and now just really don't like it's appearance, fine I'd pay for race changes and every other change but it seems to be a bit unfair making half the character changes free and the other half paid for.
Anyway, here's hoping that we see some mass spontaneous QQ and we see same faction race changes as I'd immediately pay some money out for that.

Only seems to work in the US - or rather only seems its been implemented for US servers - and its not working for them.. As soon as its working i Europe I am so going to change all my female chars to male chars to finally get rid of that silly laugh and idiotic stereotype female dancemoves that Blizzard has for female chars. I wish Blizz wasnt so stereotyped about gender - it suxs. Lots of things should be more unisex and rather an expression of who you are and not of some male phantasy about what females and males are. (Gief more female designers and gamedevelopers!!!!)

When I first saw headline I immediately jumped at the idea of changing my female kaldorei deathknight into a female gnome.
I can understand their reasons for not allowing something like that, but I'm still deeply disappointed.

I recoiled in horror upon reading this. Everyone male in the game who has both his nuts is probably going to go "omglol" and change ALL THEIR CHARACTERS to female. Many pn my list have stated they will do that, and it's just... Wow. I'm gonna have to pay for only a namechange still (One, because I keep being attacked about my name, two, someone else took my name too) and this is also gonna insult me because while I can't do that due to certain screwovers via paypal and them being loaded. They're just gonna show off to me and it'll get me extremely jealous, even if they are already being offensive to turn into girls (Again, a lot of guys will do it, at least on my server) for their jollies.
Yeah, let's turn Azeroth into the land of digital amazonians.
I simply don't see this as a good idea. I'm sure someone can see the way I see it.

"I simply don't see this as a good idea. I'm sure someone can see the way I see it."
QQ. Lots of guys went ahead and rolled femme from the start. What does it matter. WoW is not Facebook/Myspace. The gender of the person behind the keyboard matters not one bit to the game.

I still have specific moral values that were being screwed before, but I never really noticed or thought of the level 1's running around naked. Now it's gonna be level 80's too. Get it?
Hoggersbud Dec 11th 2008 11:09AM
Your problem is not with the process. It's with the mindset of a group of people.
Different things entirely.

I've been waiting for this for a while now. My draenei mage's skin looked purple when I made her because of the pink lighting in the character creation screen. By the time I noticed it was actually cyan, I was just over level 20. I changed her skin color this morning, and gave her a better face :)
snowleopard233 Dec 11th 2008 8:07AM
Meh, I was really hoping for race change. But then again, I'm a huge Draenei fan, so I would definitely be one of those mentioned people who would be turning all his characters into that race.
DRAENEI FTW!
Neil Dec 11th 2008 8:18AM
If they don't allow us to change races, then they better stop fucking around with racials!
Chriss Dec 11th 2008 9:11AM
Sigh....The game is becoming too easy. I guess I’m old school but this makes me sigh at how times on the game have changed. Some things are just too easy to obtain and change in my opinion. Oh well.
Cyanea Dec 11th 2008 9:43AM
How on EARTH does changing your character's face have anything to do with the difficulty?
Mitawa Dec 11th 2008 9:25AM
Seems like the reason they wouldn't let you change your race is because of class restrictions.
Go make a night elf druid and then change your race to gnome:
Hooray for super teddy bear and kitten form?!
Yeah. Didn't think so.
Neil Dec 11th 2008 9:30AM
Mitawa's logic is so flawed that I'm baffled.
