WoW Moviewatch: LFG: This is war
We've known for a while that the comic LFG has been working on a feature-length film. Well, they've now released another teaser, just to make sure we keep it in mind and keep looking forward to it. It's a rough animation, without the full suite of effects. But it does include another Disney-inspired song, which makes me wonder if the final movie is going to be a musical. (Which, I think, would be cool.)
I like this teaser much better than the earlier one. The first teaser was cool if you're into Richard, the all-evil all-the-time character. It was mostly a display of him walking around and killing people. I totally dug the animation and song, but the action just didn't really hit my funny bone. "This is war," however, really did it for me -- I think the contrasting characters brought more depth to the "plot."
Thanks to Andrew for the tip!

Can't wait to see the movie they're doing! I've been reading LFG for a while now and I loves it.

wonder if Disney knows they're ripping off one of their songs...

Either the song is in the public domain which I doubt or they paid their royalties..... either way its gonna be a great animated flick. The comic is excellent as well.

Disney Boy/Grrl!
:p

Parody falls under Fair Use in terms of law, meaning that LFG doesn't have to pay royalties and Disney can't really do anything about it unless they were to literally use the same song word for word (which they obviously aren't).

It's a parody. It's not ripping them off. People do it all the time. TV shows do it all the time. Hell, South Park made a name for itself doing this and other stuff.

Parody is fine. Transcribing the melody from a Disney song note for note is not. They will get in big trouble for that.
Gizen Dec 10th 2008 2:47PM
No they won't. People do it all the time. Entire careers have been made that way (Weird Al as an example). Without the same melody, it wouldn't be a parody of a specific song.

"(Weird Al as an example)"
Weird Al has to ask permission from the original artists/writers. If they say "No," he can't sell them. (As such, there are some parodies he can only perform in concerts.)
I doubt if LFG asked Disney for permission. Unless these are public domain, in which case all bets are off.
SaintStryfe Dec 10th 2008 4:46PM
actually, no. Weird Al does NOT have to ask. He does as a courtesy. If they have a problem, he stops it. But nothing legally stops him from releasing it.
His last album he had a James Blunt "You're Beautiful" parody all ready, on the GM disk, Mr. Blunt himself had approved it, when his record company said they didn't want to. Al said he could have published it, but he took a loss to remove the song. The parody later was released as a free download (the parody is "You're Pitiful", with lyrics such as "Never had a date, that you couldn't inflate, and you smell repulsive too, what a bummer being you.")
That said, I gotta wonder the swishy-factor going in with now two disney musical ripoffs.... not only that, but the first one was from "Little Mermaid", now from "Aladdin"... 90's disney films. I'm waiting for Krunch to sing "Hakuna Matata". Or a reasonable facsimile.
Gizen Dec 10th 2008 4:47PM
He doesn't HAVE to, he chooses to as a courtesy so as not to come off as a douche. And courts have ruled in favour of the parody in situations far more... plagiaristic than this. Not saying that Disney probably wouldn't try and make a case that would be a lot of unnecessary hassle for everyone involved, they just wouldn't win if it actually went to courts to decide.

I remember talking to Sohmer a couple years ago when he first started up LFG and he said at that time they were working on a project that would basically be a musical that would rip off all of the popular Disney songs.
So yeah, it's a musical. Yes, it's going to rip off Disney.
