The Northrend Gourmet made possible in patch 3.0.8
The Northrend Gourmet has been a hot topic achievement since Northrend hit live realms, because it simply wasn't possible. Four of the required recipes were completely missing. As of the current PTR build, that's no longer true. Two of the recipes have been re-added to the game, and two recipes have been wiped out of existence. Not added to the game, but no longer an achievement requirement either.Shoveltusk Soup and Succulent Orca Stew were the two that didn't make it back into the game, which makes one of 3.0.8's patch notes make a lot more sense. You know, the one about Shoveltusk Meat being converted to quest items? And orcas are just Chilled Meat fodder now, it seems.
Kungaloosh is now taught by a drunkard in the sewers of Dalaran, who apparently has the recipes etched into his arm. And Fish Feast? I hope you like doing the Cooking daily, because it now requires 5 Dalaran Cooking Awards.
Are there any major ramifications from removing the soup and stew? No, not really, unless you were sitting on a mountain of shoveltusk flesh. The buffs they supplied were redundant, offered by other meat as well as other fish. Sort of pointless recipes, really. This streamlines how many recipes you need more than anything else.
Edit: The math on this actually comes out to 44, not 45, as has been pointed out to me. Curious! I'll take a second look as soon as I get back onto the test realm, it's possible the third tier of the achievement has become 'cook them all' and not 'cook 45 of them.'

Okay so I'm confused.
We have a total of 46 recipes currently listed in the achievement window and the achievement is that we need to cook 45 of them.
Blizzard says 'woops! 4 of them weren't attainable, meaning you only had access to 42 of the recipes. we'll fix this by allowing you to obtain 2 more recipes. all's fixed!'
42 + 2 = BLIZZARD FAIL.
44 is still 1 recipe short of the achievement!
blkmasta55555 Dec 13th 2008 4:20AM
Read it again, you don't need those recipes for the achievment anymore.

You would think that instead of removing the achievement, they'd fix it so that it requires 44 recipes. Was it that broken that they couldn't be bothered to fix that?
Cabcru Dec 12th 2008 11:43PM
Glad this is sorted. It did cause me a little head scratching when I checked the achievement.
Michael Dec 12th 2008 11:48PM
Color me confused as well. 46 - 2 is indeed 44 which still isn't enough for the achievement.
Plus, unless you are a rogue adding two recipes puts the total number you can get to exactly 160. However, if you didn't play pre-bc then getting Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops is going to be a royal pain.

"but no longer an achievement requirement either"
So of the 46 in the list that list is being cut down by 2 and the 42 available are being upped by 2, so for you math geniuses who failed english:
46 - 2 = 44
42 + 2 = 44
44 = 44
It's a Winterveil Miracle!!!

They should really make Fish Feast learnable around 435 or 440. It's really expensive/diffcult to get 450 cooking.
Magma Dec 13th 2008 12:59AM
Yeah because it's totally not that difficult the other professions.
Argent Dec 13th 2008 1:15AM
because it's hard and expensive to level fishing.
because you didn't get just enough cloth while leveling to max first aid out.
oh, wait...
vazhkatsi Dec 13th 2008 12:35PM
because, then there would be absolutely no reason to get to 450 cooking, its the best recipe in the game, it should require full cooking skill. tho there should also be one for non fishers

I guess I can go ahead and get the rest of the achievement done, then.
Jeremy Dec 13th 2008 1:27AM
So with them taking out 2 will it be possible to get the Chef de Cuisine achievement?
Eric Dec 13th 2008 1:54AM
There are currently 159 recipes in game, so adding two will in fact make Chef de Cuisine possible. In fact you can get one more than the required 160. This avoids the requirement for Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops. Then again, for alliance, you have to level a horde character to 15 in order to attain the Dig Rat Stew recipe.
However, 42+2 still does equal 44; thus leaving the third tier Northrend Gourmet achievement (and the one required for Hail to the Chef) impossible.
tennberg Dec 13th 2008 3:36AM
Actually, there are 160 recipes currently in the game. The 4 not currently in-game (Fish Feast, Kungaloosh, Shoveltusk Soup, and Succulent Orca Stew) would make the total # of recipes 164, 4 more than needed for Chef de Cuisine.
By removing 2 recipes, it brings the total to 162. However, I doubt most players have the BoP rogue Thistle Tea recipe, bringing it to 161 what you could possibly get. Didn't do the AQ40 gate chain to get the Chimaerok Chops recipe? Down to 160 what you can get. Better make friends with some Horde players to get their Horde quest/vendor-only recipes.
Michael Dec 13th 2008 5:17PM
I don't know where you guys keep getting your incorrect numbers, but in the current game there is no way to get 160 even if you are a rogue. There are only 159 recipes you can actually obtain and that includes thistle tea.
Adding two puts you at 160 exactly for a non-rogue and 161 for a rogue.
Which means that non rogues are stuck getting Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops which is incredibly lame.
Eric Dec 13th 2008 7:41PM
I got my numbers by following these steps:
(1) Looking at my Chef de Cuisine achievement progress and seeing the number 149.
(2) Counting the number of Dalaran Cooking Award recipes left for me to buy, 9.
(3) Adding in the only other recipe I do not have, Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops, 1.
(4 optional) Adding the rogue only Thistle Tea recipe.
Out of this I got the number 159 for non-rogues and 160 for rogues.
With the addition of two more recipes that becomes 161 for non-rogues and 162 for rogues.

Anyone notice the version is 0.0.8 and not 3.0.8? Does that mean anything in relation to why no one can get into Northrend?
Agona Dec 13th 2008 5:23AM
PTR versions are always 0.x.
