The Light and How to Swing It: Gearing up your Holy Paladin for Haste

Of course, before we get all our gear, we have to have a clear idea of what we want from them considering Blizzard has seen fit to load some Plate with Haste and others with Crit. Protection Paladins have no problem because as soon as you see a Defense value, we'll know it's meant for us. Holy and Retribution don't have it as easy, and must often choose between Crit and Haste. Don't worry about Tier 7 and other raid epics -- they're loaded with both. There are benefits to both, so we'll examine those are after the break.

HASTE FOR HOLY
Haste is a very attractive stat for Holy Paladins thanks to the unfortunate fact that two of our bread and butter healing spells have a cast time. We have talents designed to speed this up, such as the soon-to-be-buffed Judgements of the Pure, as well as Infusion of Light. Our atomic bomb of heals are Rank 13 Holy Lights, which can go off for jaw-dropping amounts, so getting those out faster is a good, good thing. Haste also reduces the global cooldown of spells, so casting instants such as Cleanse or an Infusion of Light-powered Flash of Light won't hurt our heal thoroughput.
Critical Strike rating is important, too, owing to Holy's primary mana conservation mechanic, although we also have talents to raise that. The choice, then, of what stat to stack becomes primarily a matter of taste and play style. It's not a big issue once we start getting the epics, it's simply how we choose to get there. Faster heals work towards mobility and better spamming, so if that appeals to you, then go for Haste. I've compiled a list of decent plate Haste and Spell Power gear from a variety of sources, so you can start flashing up those heals.
1. Head
There's only one piece of Haste-imbued blue Plate, so this one should be easy. Brigg Smallshanks inside Utgarde Pinnacle will give the quest to kill King Ymiron with Vengeance Be Mine!. You can get this quest at Level 78, and can be completed in normal or heroic modes, so pick up the Platehelm of Irate Revenge. It looks exactly like the melee DPS plate, so be careful when choosing your reward.
2. Shoulders
Unfortunately, there aren't any Plate shoulders with Haste, so you might as well pick one with Crit. The best would have be the Ferocious Pauldrons of the Rhino -- yellow-socketed for more Haste Rating -- which drop from Gortok Palehoof in Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle. You're going that way for the helmet, anyway, so you can hope to get lucky. If you don't get the drop, you can have a Blacksmith craft Ornate Saronite Pauldrons or Brilliant Saronite Pauldrons, both of which are fairly cheap to make. The Ornate ones are a visual match for the helm, but the Brilliant shoulders are better for PvE since stat points are wasted on Resilience.
Lastly, there's the option of getting the Pauldrons of Morbidus, a reward from the quest The Flesh Giant Champion, the end of a quest chain in Icecrown. It takes a bit of opening up to do as the quest is phased and has a bunch of prerequisites, but if you do all the quests in the zone, you'll eventually end up there. As an added bonus, it shares the same graphic as the Ferocious and Ornate Pauldrons, so you won't look like a clown heading into your first raid.
3. Chest
There's only one piece of blue Northrend Plate that has Haste, and that's the Patina-Coated Breastplate, which is a BoE zone drop from Heroic Halls of Stone. You can try to farm the instance, but it might be better to farm the Auction House where it's likely to sell for no more than 200 Gold. Because blue and epic items come easily in Wrath, many blue BoEs sell for cheap. If you can't get this, don't worry, there are some good alternatives.
4. Waist
Similar to the chest, there's only one piece of Plate that has Haste for the waist, and it's a BoE world drop called the Belt of Crystalline Tears. It's a Level 77 blue, so it shouldn't cost too much and a few times of checking the Auction House should yield some results. On the other hand, there's a perfectly good alternative which has no Haste but Crit and a yellow socket which you can plug with a Haste gem, instead. The Girdle of the Warrior Magi can be bought from the Kirin-Tor at Revered status. This should be a servicable belt until you can get better in Naxxramas or Heroics.
5. Legs
The pants shown above are the Shardling Legguards from Heroic Halls of Stone, from the giant Krystallus. You can get a perfectly good alternative from the Argent Crusade at Honored reputation, the Standard Issue Legguards. The socket is blue instead of red, and the Haste is only about half of the Shardling Legguards, but it's a Level 78 item and it's fairly easy to get to Honored with the Argent Crusade if you level through Zul'drak and open up Crusader's Pinnacle in Icecrown.
6. Feet
There are no blue Haste plate boots in Northrend, but the red socketed Mojo Frenzy Greaves from Moorabi in Heroic Gundrak should do nicely. Since you're doing Gundrak, or if you can't do the heroic version yet, make sure you're on the quest One of a Kind, where you need to get that item that's spherical, but quite pointy at parts. You can get the Slippers of the Mojo Dojo, which has no socket but it'll do. Blacksmiths can easily craft Ornate Saronite Walkers and Brilliant Saronite Boots, both of which use up twelve Saronite Bars, with the former using an extra Eternal Shadow. The Ornate one will complete your look, but the Brilliant treads will be better for dungeons.
7. Wrist
There are two excellent options for the wrist slot for Haste, both relatively easy to obtain. The first are the Bands of Fading Light, another pair of BoE cuffs that should be relatively affordable in the new economy. The Bands are a zone drop from Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle, which should give you more reason to go in addition to the head and shoulder pieces. If these don't drop for you or you don't manage to find it for sale, you can grind to Honored with the Wyrmrest Accord for the Bracers of Accorded Courtesy, which have a yellow slot instead of a blue one, with more Haste as a socket bonus. It's wearable at Level 78, and you should reach Honored with the Accord by questing in Dragonblight and Coldarra.
8. Hands
I know I've been advising a lot of trips to the Auction House, and this pair of gloves is no exception. It's the only pair of rare Haste Plate in Northrend, but since the Web Winder Gloves drop all throughout the continent, it should make its way into the market quite often. If you don't manage to snag a pair of these, there are decent alternatives with Critical Strike Rating instead, some of which can be crafted by Blacksmiths.
9. Shield
There's only one rare shield with Haste, and that's the Bulwark of Redemption from the Banshee's Revenge, the penultimate quest in a quest chain in Icecrown. It's a group quest, so you'll need friends for this one. There are alternatives, but this one is free and completing the chain opens up the Battle at Valhallas, which leads to Icecrown's version of the Ring of Blood and Ampitheater of Anguish.
10. Main Hand
While you're grinding reputation with the Wyrmrest Accord, you might as well lift it up to Revered for the Gavel of the Brewing Storm. This hammer has both Crit and Haste, which should give you a taste of what's to come when you start raiding. Alternately, there's the Totemic Purification Rod from the Kalu'ak, which you should easily get Revered with before Level 80 thanks to the abundance of Kalu'ak quests in the starting areas. Barring that, you can have a Blacksmith (they come in real handy, don't they?) craft you a Cudgel of Saronite Justice. It has no stats, but good enough Haste and MP5. Not too shabby for 15 Saronite Bars and 2 Crystallized Water.
Filler gear
Fortunately, a lot of caster gear is stacked with Haste, making the choice for a cloak merely one of accessibility. If you're Honored with the Kirin-Tor, the Shroud of Dedicated Research isn't a bad deal at all. Tailors can craft a Cloak of Frozen Spirits extremely easily with 8 Bolts of Frostweave and a Northsea Pearl. There's a bunch to choose from, including quest rewards from Sholazar Basin and the Nexus. The same can be said for rings and amulets, a bunch of which come from quests, dungeon drops, and even crafted by Jewelcrafters.
You'll have to exercise some creativity with trinket slots, as these are where some interesting choices such as the Thorny Rose Brooch, a reward from the quest to open up the Shadow Vault in Icecrown, can come into play. It has no Spell Power, but the Use can help in a pinch where we'll need to spam Holy Lights in succession. Overall the choices for Haste for Paladins are pretty good, and half-a-second Holy Lights can be addictive. I'll compile a list of good Critical Strike Spell Power gear next, so watch this space.
Zach is back after battling the plague to talk about those everyone's favorite Paladin class, who now has to compete with those pesky Death Knights for plate. The Light and How to Swing It will also take you through starter Paladin gear, just in case you've only hit Northrend...

At long last, a holy paladin gear guide!
Thanks a lot!

IMO Haste is not what a paladin should be worried about stacking.
In my opinion:
int>crit>mp5>stam>haste
Andostre Dec 13th 2008 6:06PM
An opinion isn't worth a whole lot unless you can back it up. Just saying "This is how it should be" and then ending your post isn't that useful for someone.
Alkaios Dec 13th 2008 7:09PM
^this.
Though I usually go int>crit>mp5>+heals>haste.
Maybe I'm a bit old-school, but it worked for me in T5-T6 dungeons (never ventured into Sunwell though, where every paladin healer gemmed their open slots for spell haste).
Why stamina? This confused me...
I don't believe copious amounts of haste are needed to make a solid paladin healer. While it's a good stat to have on top of your main stat points (int, crit, mp5), you shouldn't be stacking it. Paladins NEED mp5 and crit to keep their mana afloat in raids, even with Divine Plea (which regenerates mana...but your heals go to sh!t for the duration) as well as land massive heal bombs. Esp with the new Glyph of Holy light, you should be concentrating on ol' reliable int, crit, and mp5 to improve the quality of your heals.
Of course it's always a matter of preference. Technically making mp5 and +healing as a concentration is supposed to be better then playing the RNG to crit for Illumination...but it's a playstyle thing I guess.
Beatphreek Dec 13th 2008 7:28PM
Haste is better than mp5 now... divine plea makes INT the best stat to stack for mana return and haste and spell power for throughput, crit is still good for mana return and less so for through put since it can often result in overhealing thus being wasted.
Mp5 isn't bad per say but, it isn't what it was in the FoL spamfests that was t4/5 raiding... Divine plea just gives you 25% of your total mana back every 1 min so the more mana you have the more you can regen. I routinely do 5man content with about 21,000 mana right now... so every divine plea gives me 5250 mana back which equates to 437.5 mp5 on top of whatever regen i have from gear and BoW if I have 2 paladins in group.
Wasuremono Dec 14th 2008 12:08AM
I agree. Haste is not the be-all-and-end-all stat for holy paladins. The haste we get from judgement of the pure and a trinket like the egg and random pieces of gear should be enough haste. Intellect increases our crit rate which increase our mana regen and increases our mana pool which increase the mana we get back from divine plea. Intellect also increase our spell power. Once you can spam holy light who cares it is a 1 second cast or a 1.9 second cast at this point in the game. Haste isn't worth the ilevels.
jaxson_bateman Dec 14th 2008 9:11AM
You don't need to stack mp5 or int; at least no in T7. Int is far better than mp5 due to its other benefits and the fact that it increases the regeneration provided by Divine Plea and Replenishment, but even then, the extra regeneration isn't required. I've done every encounter including some attempts at Sarth +3 (in both 10 and 25), and I have never found a need for any regen beyond the use of a single pot or dark rune.
Ulduar *might* be different, however, we don't know this. At this point in time, the best stat scheme seems to be:
SP > crit = haste > int > mp5

Thanks for this post!
I've been considering the haste/crit aspects heavily and really enjoyed this post. I've bookmarked it for later use.
For holy I plan to be stacking:
Spellpower/Crit/Haste/Int/Mp5/Stam
In order of importance to me, of course.
Thanks again!

Pardon my lack knowledge, but why would a holy paladin stack haste? Wouldn't simply stacking haste and spellpower give quick heals, but no mana regen in the long run?
I have a holy paladin to 70 and it seems what always worked was stacking crit for better heals and mana regen outside stacking mp5.
I haven't played WotLK yet and now wondering if Blizz changed anything.
Taji Dec 13th 2008 6:38PM
With the changes to raid mana regen, and the addition of Divine Plea, I hardly ever run out of mana.
The old problem was that Paladins had no way to regen mana without MP5, well now we have Divine Plea, so if a boss has a phase change that takes a while you arn't just siting around.
Haste is very important, and not just for DPS. The faster you heal the more you heal.
Having run and cleared every 25 man that the order of importance would be SP>Crit>Haste>Int>MP5>Stam.
I know my gear is a bit above average but take a look if you want.

Beatphreek Dec 13th 2008 7:33PM
Quite simply... pally healing has been completely changed.
Divine plea, Beacon of Light, Glyph of Holy Light, Judgements of the Pure, Sacred Shield, Infusuion of Light, and a 6 second cooldown on Holy shock... those have completely changed how we heal at 80.
It took me a while to get used to the changes but now I've healed most of the Heroic instances successfully and am really beginning to like the changes.
What worked in pre-sunwell content will most certainly not be the best way to do things anymore.
Frago Dec 13th 2008 6:45PM
Well done!
SimpleSurvival Dec 13th 2008 7:05PM
I would mostly agree with doogan on his priority list for stats.. He didn't say why, but here are my reasons... his might be different
int>spell>crit>mp5>stam>haste
Int for your mana pool, when you are happy with the size, move on. (Holy Guidance +spell too!)
spell to get your heals up to where you want them... chances are you won't even try to stack this... but it'll get to where it needs to be
Crit for big heals and conservation, when you are happy, move on
MP5, once crit isn't enough to keep your mana pool conserved, you gotta go to other places to get it.
Stam for those fights where you know you are gonna get pounded... if you haven't attained the "Reccomended amount" for your fights, stack a bit more on, then move on
Haste, because its the only thing that could actually make you a better healer at this point...
Spamming sissy heals on a tiny cast time on a baby mana pool will make you go OOM on the simplest of fights
Stacking +spell before Int doesn't make much sense because Int has the benfit of adding +spell, mana, and +spell crit. (it'll even increase your mp5 regen from spirit... cuz pallies stack spirit) No point in stacking any of them until you have gotten your mileage outta int.
Taji does make some good points with Divine Plea being added in, MP5 can be pushed back in the priority list, possibly even to the end if you want... But the first time you go OOM in an important fight, i direct you to re-examine your MP5 situation
Iannah Dec 13th 2008 8:05PM
Well, since most holy paladin gear has generous amounts of int, stam and sp, there's not much to choose there. On the gear itself, it's there.
After that, most things have a combination of 2 out of 3 of crit, haste and mp5. Seeing the status of holydins right now, there's actually a difference between raids and dungeons right now. For raids, I have got a lot of haste, and it's in part because of the way Beacon works.
In a regular dungeon, nobody will "steal" your heals, so you can happily Beacon your tank and just group heal. In raids, that's not the case. If you Beacon your tank, but other healers are faster than you in healing the raid, the heals that you meant to go on a raid member plus the tank, won't heal at all, which is bad. Haste means a faster reaction time, which means less of your heals go to waste, which means it's a lot healthier for the tank.
Now I've already raided quite a bit, and mp5 is not as important as it used to be. With all the tools available, I can keep up spamming Holy Light for at least 4 minutes without going out of mana, and that's with quite low mp5 values. Divine Plea and Illumination will do just nicely.
So to summarize my personal opinion: haste>crit>mp5
And int, sp, sta are on everything, so not worth worrying about.
Beatphreek Dec 13th 2008 9:11PM
I completely agree with your assessment of where we are at as holy right now... I have been gemming for INT simply because my gear isn't up there but I full intend to re-prioritize as I get all 200 lvl gear.
dunnion Dec 15th 2008 3:46AM
finally! I was getting worked up by all the posters above who seemed to think that the article was saying to only get haste, and NOTHING else!
Doomthehorde Dec 13th 2008 10:03PM
Personally, I think you don't have much of a choice, because, as Iannah said, base stats(int+sta+sp) are there anyway.
The only choice you've got to make is wether choosing crit or haste as a primary need. I would definately go crit>haste>mp5, because a paladin's main regen method is still Illumination. Then, I throw some haste in, because hey, we do need more heals on a shorter amount of time, don't we?
On the last place, mp5. If the crits + Divine Plea still make me go oom, then, I'll consider replacing some haste with mp5, if it's possible.
There are always alternatives.
I spent some time sightseeing epic gear from 10 and 25man raids, especially naxx, and I came to a conclusion that paladins are actually meant to stack haste in wrath.
Just like it's been mentioned before, if you have lots of haste, and you place your Bacon on the tank, and then spam heals on raid members, it's just heaven.
I personally think paladins don't really have reasons to worry atm.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but bring solid arguments if you do it.
phoenixmgn Dec 14th 2008 5:21AM
Come on, Zach. Haste is not good for the fact that "two of our bread and butter healing spells have a cast time". It's due to the fact that Haste increases HPS more than any other stat pound for pound. Critical will increase HPS a good deal, as well... but not nearly to the extent that Haste will.
Assuming people know how to manage their mana pool, spec, and activate all of the goofy cast-to-benefit Paladin spells, Paladins should be going for two (four if you want to get into Spellpower and Intellect, which come standard on any Plate Paladin gear that's worth getting) stats in particular...
Haste and Spell Critical.
Mp5 scales poorly and won't provide any increase whatsoever to HPS unless you're going out of mana (and with Divine Plea and proper management, you better not).
