With a Priest that I've roleplayed as; I've always explained shadow magic this way: Without shadows & darkness, what meaning would the Light have? The shadows allows us to appreciate the Light. What is good without evil?

Indeed, I don't have a Priest, but that's how I see it too.
Like that old Lagwagon song goes:

"But with no darkness there would never be light,
Without injustice we'd never have a right"
