My understanding of the Shadow is that it is more similar to a Shaman's elements than the sentient light. I don't mean elementals, but something of a force of nature that responds to one's will.My Shadow priest (well, he's Holy right now, but I'm pretending he's not), does not serve Shadow, as one might serve the Light, but instead, he's more like a Shadowmage (except not a Warlock).Basically, he's just like a Mage that channels Shadow rather than Frost or Fire. It's just another source of power without an innate connection to good or evil.

Not Mary Sue. I think this one could be reasonable enough to work, personally... except that I don't know how the healing part of it would work. Would your priest literally never heal? Or would the healing come from somewhere else?

Well, storywise (what I write about him), he doesn't heal. Game-wise, I love healing and that's why I play holy. But he has utterly rejected the Light, and only uses the Shadow.
