Lichborne: Basic defense gearing for the Death Knight tank

So you're level 80 and you want to respec to a tank build and head straight into tanking 5-mans. In order to be the best tank you can be, there's a very definite first step you should take, which we have discussed before, but which bears repeating: Get 540 Defense. This will make you immune to critical strikes from level 83 mobs, making it much easier to heal you in pretty much every situation, and it's really a prerequisite for serious tanking before any other stat.
Unfortunately, Death Knights are at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to getting maximum defense. We don't get to wear shields, block rating gear is right out useless for us, and two-handed weapons aren't itemized for defense. Still, it's possible to hit that magic number, even without dual wielding tanking weapons.
This week's Lichborne is meant to showcase a variety of defensive options for Death Knights that require a minimum of dungeon grinding to get. By picking and choosing from this list, you should be able to get that 540 defense skill cap, and hopefully then be able to tank a few of the more difficult normals and beginning heroic dungeons on your own.
As a reminder, defense skill is not the same as defense rating. Rather, you need defense rating to get defense skill. Specifically, you will need approximately 690 defense rating to gain the 540 defense skill you need to gain critical strike immunity against level 83 mobs.
Helm
Questing in Storm Peaks, you should stumble upon the Crown of the Hyldnir in the middle of the massive quest line started by They Took Our Men at K3. While 37 defense rating seems a little low, the helm does have a handy yellow gem slot, perfect for a Thick Autumn's Glow or a Thick Sun Crystal, bumping up that defense rating by a handy amount.
Of course, you may want to skip the hassle with the gem slot and just do some questing in Icecrown. By helping the Argent Crusade, you'll eventually get The Crusader's Resolution as a quest reward, a helm that not only beats out a gemmed Crown of the Hyldnir in defense rating and stamina, but also comes with some expertise, perfect for bumping up your threat.
If you're doing some dungeon running, keep an eye out for the Helm of the Ley-Guardian from normal Oculus. It not only beats out both of the above helmets on stamina and defense rating, it has a red gem slot, which might look good with, say, a Champion's Monarch Topaz in it. Really, if you have a chance to run the Oculus, just take it and pray for this helm to drop.
Whichever helm you choose, be sure to grab revered with the Argent Crusade and enchant it with the Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector to take care of a good part of your defense needs right there.
Shoulders
If you're looking for a non-dungeon option for your defense rating on the shoulder needs, consider finding a friendly Blacksmith to make you Tempered Saronite Shoulders. They're only level 76, but they have a nice bit of strength and stamina to go with their defense rating.
You might also want to keep an eye out for the Crusader's Square Pauldrons. They have the most armor of these three shoulder choices and some nice dodge rating that's just perfect for keeping Bone Shield up a little while longer. They drop off trash in the Culling of Stratholme, but are bind on equip, so you may find them on the AH as well.
If you have a chance to run the Halls of Stone, you'll get a very nice reward from a quest in there, the Pauldrons of Reconnaissance. They don't have quite as much stamina or armor as the other options, but they are likely to cost you less. Most importantly, they also have the most defense rating of our three choices by far.
Of course, once you get honored with the Sons of Hodir, you'll want to slap the Lesser Inscription of the Pinnacle on your shoulders as well.
Chest
Your best pre-heroic bet for this slot is probably going to be the Breastplate of the Solemn Council, from revered Wyrmrest Accord faction. Unfortunately, unless you've been doing all of the Wyrmrest Accord dailies every day for a few months, you probably aren't going to get revered with Wyrmrest without strapping on the tabard and running a few level 80 dungeons. Still, it's probably worth it. It has tons of every basic statistic a Death Knight tank needs, plus some expertise on the side.
While you're working on that reputation, you might consider picking up a Tempered Saronite Breastplate. Your local smith can make this for you, and it has tons of armor, stamina, strength, and defense rating that should serve you well until the dragons cough up your chest piece.
If you're not quite willing to plunk down the dough for the Tempered Saronite Breastplate, there's also the Cultbreaker's Chestguard, gotten from the Chain of Command quest from the Death Knight on your faction's Icecrown airship. Once again, a somewhat low 37 defense rating is offset by a yellow gem slot that offers the chance to make it up, plus an extra 4 defense rating from the socket bonus.
Finally, if you've been doing your Kalu'ak quests, you probably have access to the Ivory-Reinforced Chestguard, which compares very favorably to the Tempered Saronite Breastplate in defensive stats, and has some expertise besides.
As a side note, the chestal area is a good place to grab even more defense via Enchant Chest - Greater Defense, which will net you an extra 22 defense.
Wrist
Tempered Saronite Bracers are a nice quick upgrade for level 80 tanking, with plenty of defense rating and a good amount of stamina. For "freer" options, you'll have to do some dungeon running.
Svala Sorrowgrave in Utgarde Pinnacle drops Svala's Blood Shackles. While they have less defense rating that the Tempered Saronite, they blow it away on strength, armor, and stamina, and have some dodge rating besides.
If you're running the Oculus, you may also want to pick up the quest A Wing and A Prayer, which rewards the Bracers of Reverence. They have a nice amount of stamina and defense, coming up as a middle path between the other two bracers, and come with hit rating for grabbing more threat.
Gloves
Near the tail end of the long quest chain started with They Took Our Men, you'll get a chance to watch a pretty epic storyline reach an ending of sorts. As a reward for watching that, you can pick up the Gauntlets of Vigilance, a nice set of gloves with plenty of strength and agility for dodging and parrying, as well as a good amount of stamina and defense.
If you need a bit more defense that those offer, though, or just haven't had the time to finish that quest chain, consider getting a Blacksmith to make you some Daunting Handguards. They don't have near as much strength and not quite as much stamina as the Gauntlets of Vigilance, but they have twice as much defense rating.
Belt
Do you see a pattern yet? Tempered Saronite comes to the rescue once again. The Tempered Saronite Belt is going to be a quick and easy upgrade that has all of the basics to start tanking.
For a more a high powered belt, you'll want to keep an eye out for the Girdle of Obscuring in the Oculus, which doesn't have as much defense rating as the Tempered Saronite, but does beat it rather handily in all other areas, and adds some parry rating besides.
For the questing option, you'll want to check in with your friendly neighborhood Icecrown airship Death Knight again. The Gutbuster of Aldur'thar does lose out to the Tempered Saronite Belt on armor and defense rating, but edges it out in strength and stamina by a decent margin. It's a reward from the Not A Bug quest.

Can someone explain how a Death Knight is uncrittable through defense? They're missing the block portion of that stat. Doesn't that make defense rating 33% less desirable for them? I thought that you were uncrittable by raid bosses once reaching 102.5% total chance to avoid a hit? Wouldn't that put them at 68.33%, not counting parry/dodge rating and parry from strength? Will this gear have enough dodge/parry/str to cover that difference?
andyjay220 Dec 15th 2008 9:47AM
The 102.4% stat is when you are unhittable (meaning everything is a dodge, block, parry, or miss). If you hit that percentage, regardless of class, you are unhittable.
I don't know about how defense counts for druids and DK tanks though. Anyone know how it works for them?
velfore Dec 15th 2008 9:50AM
thats crushing blows that you are thinking of and blizz took those out, we still have to be defense capped to avoid the critical strikes.
Sarek Dec 15th 2008 9:55AM
540 Defense Skill will make you uncrittable, regardless of class.
The numbers you are thinking about will prevent you from ever taking an unavoided or unmitigated hit, i.e. every melee swing at you will be missed, blocked, parried, or dodged. As you correctly point out, it's pretty much impossible at the moment to reach that status as a death knight (only paladins at this point can guarantee 100% uptime on such "block-capping").
Wotar Dec 15th 2008 9:55AM
25% of their strength is converted to parry. Not 100% sure how that works in game, but since they will be likely stacking a lot of that, I think that is a buttload of mitigation.
Sarek Dec 15th 2008 9:59AM
@velfore
That's not entirely correct.
Crushing blows were not removed, but the threshold for crushing was changed to 4 levels, not 3, of difference between player and mob, so raid boss mobs no longer crush, as they are considered 3 levels above the player.
102.4% is still relevant in that reaching that level of avoidance will prevent you from ever taking an unavoided and unmitigated hit.
velfore Dec 15th 2008 4:39PM
dks have to have the defense, druids have talent points to spec in for the 6% chance for the critical hits (which is what the defense cap is for) but dks defense is the same as pallys and wars, the only difference now is druids dont need defense

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44407
It's a very good and easy chest piece to get and will last until you get revered with Wyrmrest.
Rob Roy Dec 15th 2008 10:58AM
I have almost all of the blue items on this list with the higher defense rating on them other than the Wyrmrest chest peice and the Argent Dawn helm enchant (and the chest enchant, which I'll be getting tonight) and I still only have 500 defense. I'm kind of pesimistic about the odds of those last few items carying me to 540. Has anyone done the math on this? Can Death Knights even get uncritable pre heroics/Naxx?
schmunkel98 Dec 15th 2008 11:16AM
From what I have seen, you are going to have to go that extra mile and snag at least one defensive trinket until you get access to better gear. The enchants will also help you get closer to your goal. Remember, you only need 535 to be uncrittable for heroics, versus 540 for raids. It might not seem like much, but that extra 5 defense can allow you to swap one piece of gear for more avoidance or stamina/damage.
As a pally tank, I have only run with dps DK's so far. I would plan on DPSing my way to 80, while grabbing tanking gear along the way. The DK in my guild that wanted to tank used this method with much success. I would advise not rolling on tanking gear in an instance unless your current tank passes on it. This tends to piss off the tanks.
raedix Dec 15th 2008 1:35PM
It is nearly impossible for a DK to get to 540 defense without heroic gear unless you have the Seal of the Pantheon from Loken in regular Halls of Lightning. Hopefully, you'll be luckier than I was, as I had to farm him for nearly a week, doing at least two runs a day before it finally dropped. Hence why they're coming out with the +25 Def Skill runeforge for the next patch... to make getting a DK uncrittable less of a Herculean feat.
That said, running heroics as DPS is a reasonable way to get some gear (although DPS can easily be undergeared as well... make sure you can sustain at least, say 1100-1200 DPS to keep your group happy). I don't think that deferring to the tank, especially in a PUG, is necessary, but stating your intentions when you join the group should be common courtesy. Expect to be asked to leave a small percentage of times when doing this... hey, the guy who's tanking might have been farming this item for days... but most of the time they'll say fine. Even better, find a Bear tank :P

That pic made me LOL.
I needed that after 12 continuous hours of writing a paper... thanks.
Toclafane Dec 15th 2008 11:51AM
Any chance of doing this for DPS DK's too? I only ask because as a Blood-spec dps DK, I've somehow managed to wind up with 9 Blue pieces of equipment with +Def on them - simply because they've given me so much more +Str & +Stam. These are handy for if I need to tank, but not ideal as I end up with less damage through +Crit & +AP.
Might just be me, but I don't recall seeing many pure dps Plate pieces as I levelled - not without having +Spellpower on them as well anyway.
You can see what I mean on my Armory page - Scoville on Shadowsong EU

Ran Kara on Friday for the fun of it. Lvl 70 DK . Did pretty good tanking it if i dont mind saying so. If anyone from there is on correct me if im wrong. But a nice defense neck droped off Maiden and one of the dps DK rolled and won it. Oh boy was i pissed it would have been a nice upgrade for me. Also dont forget sometime in the next few patches we will be getting the new sigils.
Gary Rogers Dec 15th 2008 1:01PM
There needs to be a HIT guide like this for DPS DKs.
Dez Dec 15th 2008 3:41PM
Haven't read the guide yet, will do. Let me first say this couldn't be more on time, my DK is 77 and pushing for 80 tanking.
I level as Frost tank-specced and it works fine, no, more then fine. I rarely heal myself as so close to no downtime, I can kite 100% if needed and I barely loose hp even without using any of my defense cooldowns (which happen to be very short CD's) or my ghoul. Also have the benefit to easily find partys and roll on tank gear.
As for crits they're like 4kish, and just yesterday I did a 5k Froststrike out of the blue, no idea how cause there was nothing special about the mob or my buffs. 5k crit, as a tank, im not saying im amazing im saying im amazed at the capabiltiies of a DK and the frost spec. Howling blast is an AoE and crits for like 4k+ XD.
Dez Dec 15th 2008 3:45PM
Oh and as for Runic Power I have more then I know what to do with, often see it filled out without noticing.
Stragalia Dec 15th 2008 4:37PM
There's a pretty decent 2 handed axe with defence on it from a quest in icecrown aswell.
Axe of bloodstained ice.
Greeny
132.6 dps
53 str.
79 stam.
53 def rating.
Jazen Dec 16th 2008 9:08AM
can be crit capped easily at 80 pre-raid and pre-heroic...not sure what gear i logged out in but am around 520 for trash and 545 for bosses in instances...Mostly the temp saronite gear and a few +def drops in instances...
Jazen Dec 16th 2008 9:23AM

not currently specced as this, but am playing around with talent calculators. Comments or suggestions, seems to be best booster for strength/stamina possible while still maxing defense and self-healing for the 'oh no' moments.
