WoW Moviewatch: the Bells of Northrend
I have to agree with Kamuraki who said, when speaking about the song used in the Bells of Northrend, "Trans-Siberian Orchestra did the most AWESOME version of Carol of the Bells that will ever be done in the history of mankind. Maybe some alien race will do a better cover some day, but I doubt it."
"The Bells of Northrend" is Baka Savant's submission to A Very Northrend Christmas contest. It's a music video set to the sights of Northrend, obviously. The music playing is "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. (I've had the good fortune to see them in concert twice, and they do in fact rock.)
I think the Northrend imagery lines up incredibly well, which is probably a no-brainer given the winter weather. But the landscape of white-forests, vast stone architecture, and crystal landscapes works well with screaming guitars shredding their power chords. I mean, it is all very metal when you get down to it, and isn't that the point?

I got to see TSO live here in Charleston last month, and they kicked ass. Highly recommended, if you live in any of the cities still left on their tour.

Seriously, that rocks so very very much. I love that version of the song, and the visuals that go with it, while simple, fit so well and are so awesome to watch... major kudos here.
chrisstie Dec 15th 2008 12:19PM
I didn't think you could submit to their contests using unoriginal music. Hrm.

awesome

I'm sorry, but TSO's version is tied for best. Mark Edward Lewis' Carol of the Bells is easily as awesome, and unique in it's own right.
But hey, any TSO is good TSO.

I saw TSO just last night. AMAZING concert. They do know how to rock an arena, and their Winter Tour is a Christmas tradition for us.
And it's PERFECT for this video. Kudos!

Made my day! Very cool video.

Am I the only who hears this song (and any variant thereof) and automatically starts thinking, "I work at burger king making flame broiled whoppers! I wear paper hats. Would you like an apple-pie with that?! Would you like an apple-pie with that!?"
Maybe I'm just weird.

This is ORIGINALLY done by SAVATAGE on their CD Dead Winter Dead. I love Savatage, but i must say that except from this song, the rest of the CD is the worst they ever made :(

Pretty nice, but my impressions of this song have been coloured by "A Very Matrix Christmas" by the SA goons. Which is a little piece of awesome you should all see.

That said, no enormous frost giants? No blue dragons? No climactic battles or rampaging scourge? Seems like there would be so much more to do with that song than dramatically panning the camera along some scenery.

I sort of missed an ... OOMPF at the end. The grand finale. The big climax.
McRaider Dec 15th 2008 1:19PM
That's figgin' wonderful! I've heard a lot of versions of this song and this one is all the way best!
Kassius Dec 15th 2008 1:37PM
Bah, laughable 80#s guitar sounds is better than any choral version of this song?
You must be joking. another lame rapid cut music video used the L70TC models. /yawn
gief more gnomechewer i say
SaintStryfe Dec 15th 2008 2:42PM
The song was produced in the 1995. Don't talk if ya can't even take the time to look it up.
And while I'm a great lover of choral Christmas music, common, this is TSO, one of the truly great things about the Holiday Season!
Get over yourself.

Ah! Trans-Siberian Orchestra music set to WoW--wonderful!
I've had the food fortune to see them in concert twice as well; this song is by far one of my favorites.
