All US realms will now be down until 1pm PST / 4pm EST.I really don't know why Blizzard doesn't just change their times for extended maintenance to make it last until 1pm PST every time, or just push it back to 3pm PST and be done with it. That way there are no failed expectations when the servers don't come up.
It's a relatively contradictory thing for them to say they'll wait push a patch to live until it's ready and never give a time estimate, and then turn around and give a time estimate whenever the severs are down. Don't you think? Perhaps they should just say the severs will be back up "soon."
Of course, I'm probably just QQing because this afternoon my lazy butt is finally going to hit exalted with the Kalu'ak. I'm going to go get that sweet fishing pole first thing. I'm going to dance with it too, a pole dance if you will. But alas that'll have to wait until I can log on.
We'll put up a post when servers are back up, or some other debacle happens. Stay tuned.

I was more excited to hit Exalted w/ the Tuskar's (sp) because of the penguin pet!
We went out and got us late comers the worg pup and spider pets lastnight. I hit 50 pets and got a lil' Stinker!

Was hoping to get my dailies done before work, but oh well. They're quicker/easier to do at 2AM EST when few ppl are on anyways... Oracle rep egg or bust!!!

I don't find their estimation techniques contradictory. You don't need the newest patch to play, but you do need the server to be up. Therefore, I don't find you can compare these two things as 'uptime' and 'enhancements' are not the same thing. That's like someone telling a developer that a 'bug' and a 'feature request' are the same thing and thus should both be treated the same.

This almost makes it worth it that my job (in software QA not related to gaming) has a huge deadline and I won't be getting home ontime. However, it does not make it better that I didn't get to use all my alts cooldowns this morning before work and now they will all be set to cool down in the evening again...

I don't understand why extended maintenance has to be done on all realms at once, why not split it up into half the realms one day a week and the other half the other day? That way we could start toons on a separate realm and play them on off days. That way at least for those of us that have most of our play time during the day won't be bored out of our skulls one day a week.
Maybe I am missing something like the fact that they have to unplug everything so some tech doesn't get shocked or something, but it would REALLY be nice not to have any time during the week for housework.

Most likely because the server hardware isn't rated to take on twice the load, as you suggest.
Or it might be so that half the realms aren't on a different patch then the other half.
Or maybe they figure that one day out of seven won't be that big a deal.

I'd simply assume that this extended maintenace is a result of several hotfixes coming through the pipeline. I think, of the top of my head, that swipe doing +50% threat and them fixing the pally judgement bug is what's keeping them.
I assume you'd want that on every server, right?

Unless someone has actual evidence to the contrary, I don't think the patch is going live today. Here's why:
When there's a patch and you try to log on, even while the servers are down, the game has in the past gone ahead and patched the client.
I tried at lunch (about 1 hour ago) and it didn't. So my guess would be its not going live today. Plus a week is really, really short to be in PTR.
Having said that however, if someone has a link officially stating the patch is live then I'll happily eat crow. (mmmm....crow)

The PTR hasn't even officially opened up yet. If it had, the PTR forum wouldn't be locked.

Surprise! Something unexpected happened. So what would have been an accurate timetable for servers coming back ended up not happening.
I'd rather them fix whatever needs such fixing than to take them live w/ something broken.

To add to that, can we send some people back in time to vanilla wow where tuesday wasn't the only server down day and it could happen at anytime unexpectedly? Where sometimes you'd be lucky if the server was up after 2 days of maintenance. Perhaps then they'd know that this isn't even close to bad.

Yeah I expected that when I saw there were no realms up (I use World of Warcraft Realm Status Tool for Firefox).
I agree that it would be better to estimate long and then say "Surprise, we fixed it early" then to say 11am PST and miss it.
Well, if the patch comes out (not sure if it will, as when I try to run downloader it says "no new patch available") I'll be ready, as I have my flask.
I suspect it is delayed because of the new Arena season starting.
