WoW Moviewatch: Dragonball Z: Trouble on Arlia, pt I
Tryton created Dragonball Z: Trouble on Arlia, pt I by putting Dragonball Z's soundtrack on top of World of Warcraft graphics. This isn't the first time Tryton's created Dragonball Z WoW machinima, as we've featured his work before. I guess he must be a pretty big fan.
The animation is actually really well done. I like the character models he chose, and I thought the settings, effects, and mis en scene all came together very well. That being said, without the character context or background story information, I didn't feel like I had much clue what was going on. That's probably just my lack of familiarity with Dragonball Z, though, and I can totally cop to that. I was, however, somewhat disappointed not to see anyone shouting "It's over 9000!"
Hopefully, the second part will actually happen, and we'll be able to see where the story goes. I'd encourage Tryton to try and create his own script, eventually. His moviemaking skills are definitely there, and I'd like to see what original content he may create.

Don't worry, Michael. Nobody knows what's going on in Dragonball, especially the writers/animators. I feel sorry for the people so bored that they can watch a twitching eyeball or a dude running for 30 minutes and be entertained by it. I'm going on the record to say that Dragonball is retarded. Just because the Japanese have lost their damn minds doesn't mean we have to buy into it too.

Well Anaughtybear it's not hard to figure out what's going on in DB if you took the time to watch it rather then judge it solely on it's fanbase. I remember watching this on Cartoon Network and it put me on to other great Anime shows. Most anime is always targeted toward the youth in America especially while in Japan its target audience is a bit more mature. As for the vid it was some nice editing and its always nice to see some fan work.

I totally agree with you. Dragonball Z, Naruto, and alot of the anime that is put on American TV is censored heavily and makes no sense. The actual show in Japan makes more sense, but is dumbed down to American children, whereas in Japan the show is aimed towards more mature viewers.
Personally I don't care for it either way, but I just thought I would share.

As a friend pointed out; DBZ is a fight scene, then ten episodes of preparing for a rematch, then an almost identical fight scene, then another 20 episodes of preparing for a rematch.
Personally I liked Dragon Ball (no Z at the end), it was more whimsical, and I actually liked the characters. DBZ is boring.
@Markymark: it really is a shame since that people associate DBZ with anime, which probably plays a roll in why anime has no credibility in the West still.
Children should obsess over Deathnote, Gantz and Elfen Lied.

The reason why we had episodes that were ~30 min of twitching eyeballs, screaming like they were constipated, and boring internal dialogue is that the animators were attempting to avoid what happens when all good manga becomes good anime: the anime catches up to the manga, and either has to make fillers or stalls. They choose to stall, but stalled in all the wrong ways, creating a tottally different problem.
As for the reason why we never saw anyone screaming "IT'S OVER 9000!!" is because that happened like 4 seasons into the show, this was a sample of the first DBZ episode.
Overall, I liked this clip. It was great in the fact that it was very close to the actual anime, so close that as I was watching, I was seeing the actual anime in my head as I saw it when I was 12, watching it for the first time.

You see, the anime you see in American TV is dumbed down and censored beyond comprehension, thus creating a twisted and raped version of what it once was. Go ahead, watch one episode of whatever in japanese with fansubs and the very same episode in english. You will notice a huge difference. Oh wait, you won't, cause you are a troll, dear Naughtybear.
Anaughtybear Dec 18th 2008 2:27PM
Just as I thought, some emotional responses from the anime fanboys. It's hardly worth calling me a troll when you don't make any valid points yourself. I've seen more than enough to make an educated decision on the matter. I simply prefer plot, good animation and a little intelligence to cartoon boobs, tentacles and giant robots.
I'd bet serious money you kids play blood elves as well. That's psychology, son. Go back to masturbating to manga schoolgirls and quit attempting the snappy comebacks. There was no need to get defensive in the first place. There's enough room for more than one opinion.

Looks better and more entertaining then what Hollywood has done to DBZ (based on the trailers).

I ve got to say I completely agree with what Anaughtybear said. Frankly I have to agree even with his most recent post.
hoboxjohn Dec 18th 2008 4:58PM
I bet it will take them 18 more episodes to charge up a Spirit Bomb.
Comstock Dec 18th 2008 5:38PM
Well of course nobody's yelling "over 9000" here.
That happens like 20 episodes after this one.

Bear, firstly, not all Japanese animation is the same - just as not all American live action movies are the same. Judging an entire medium based on one very bad example is not what I'd call fair.
Secondly, Dragonball Z was bad, yes. The pacing and character development were poor at best, the animation was a little cheap at times, and the overall plot was almost nonexistent. That said, it's had a lasting impact on even American society, given that a generation grew up watching it. Even I have fond memories of some parts of it, despite my general dislike for the series.
Let's not dismiss such things completely out of hand.
