Blizzard adds advertising to the official forums

As for the design argument, everything is a matter of taste in that way -- if Blizzard doesn't feel the ads break their forums, then we probably won't see a change. They didn't, for example, put ads in between the forum posts, and there are no ads on the official front page (save for Blizzard's usual advertising of World of Warcraft itself). As for the second issue, that's a stickier one. The ads are served by a company called Atlas Solutions, which appears to be a division of Microsoft, which, you'll remember, is the same company that Blizzard recently made a deal with for ads on their Battle.net service. Right now, the ads are mostly for extended universe items from Blizzard partners like Upper Deck, but players are worried that an unsavory advertiser could get in there with a keylogger, and then suddenly half the forums are hacked.
That seems unlikely -- Blizzard will definitely have a strong say over what does and doesn't go up in those ads (no gold advertisers, for example), so as much as the Flash-based ads are a security risk, Blizzard certainly must think they're well protected against any issue like that. And finally, the question of whether it's right to show a paying audience ads is up to you -- Blizzard seems more than happy to charge for optional experiences in their game, and going on the forums certainly isn't a part of the game proper. They likely believe that while advertising ingame would be wrong, advertising in an "optional" place like the forums is consistent with their moneymaking policies so far. But the fans seem very against it -- we'll see what choices Blizzard decides to make from here.

The ads look fugly.
Davidious Dec 19th 2008 11:50AM
Your talking about their ads?
Danta Dec 19th 2008 11:08AM
Well as long as you have a customer base, might as well bleed them for all they've got, I suppose. Sheesh.
Blackthorn Dec 19th 2008 11:09AM
Slap in the face I say.
Alan Dec 19th 2008 12:46PM
The general quality of the forums is more of a slap in the face than anything else.
These ads don't bother me at all. Maybe if there was a quality forum and/or forum communuty over there I would feel differently. It's just a bunch of drooling trolls quoting the post above them and writing things like "THIS" and "QFT."
I like it to ads on a subway: the place already looks like hell, so who cares if there's advertising all over it?
ShadowMagus Dec 19th 2008 1:18PM
I generally avoid the official forums like the plague. I've found that the Wowhead forums tend to be a lot more helpful and not full of idiots and trolls.
Also, Firefox+Adblock ftw. I haven't seen a banner ad in ages.

The official forums offer little informational value to me as of late, so I will continue to avoid them.
The official forums are a wretched hive of scum, and villainy.

"advertising is how you pay for things without paying for them" - Morgan Webb (among many others, I'm sure..but Morgan is prettier)
I'm fine with the ads, I'd be even more fine with them if the extra revenue translates into cheaper expansions and reduced subscription fees.
I read the forums only occasionally, so the ads aren't that big a deal to me and Blizzard is a company I support, so I disabled ad block for the forums. Blizzard is a for-profit company and advertising is a major source of revenue. I'm kind of surprised they didn't do this sooner
Azhariel Dec 19th 2008 11:22AM
I'd be happy with them if there was the slightest hint that the subscription price would drop, but on contrary, Blizz recently said that they're "more than happy" with their price and don't plan to change anytime soon..
On the other hand, an ad or two in websites is something I'm already used to anyway. Specially (sp) if they're fugly.

"I'm fine with the ads, I'd be even more fine with them if the extra revenue translates into cheaper expansions and reduced subscription fees."
I agree with that.
And I don't visit the forums that often either, so it doesn't bother me that much, but it does have me worrying what's in store for the future.

Cheaper subs and expansions?
Jesus. This is already the cheapest gaming-hour-per-dollar entertainment channel in my life. Seriously.
Ads? seriously, the solution is simple. Block'em or don't and then forget about it. This isn't an issue to even fuss about. ESPECIALLY since its the official, utterly useless forums.

Who is Morgan Man-jaw prettier than again? :P
I kid. I guess.

Another Activision influence detracting from a great gaming company.
togaman5000 Dec 19th 2008 8:36PM
Doubt it's Activisions fault, as I can imagine the cost of maintaining those servers isn't something to sneeze at. And plus, most of the forum goers know a way to block the ads. FF + AdBlock + whatever the addon that disables flash = no ads, yet Blizzard is still getting paid. We see nothing, they profit, win win.
terminatorer Dec 19th 2008 12:14PM
I was assuming this was .... EA inspired? Or whoever owns that ad company they just inked a deal with since it was very recently they signed that deal.
Murgrum Dec 19th 2008 12:50PM
/agree
VSUReaper Dec 19th 2008 1:48PM
I totally agree with Kryptich - this looks like Activision horning in on what they said they would leave alone.
In fact, its my opinion (based off some of the developer comments that I have seen on the beta and live forums) that Blizzard was not 100% ready to release Wrath, but was forced to release it this quarter by Activision.
Personally, if they want to throw some adds in, fine: but put them on the bottom of the page. When I am at work, I have wowinsider, tankspot, worldofmatticus, and the official forums on my browser. I hate the way the flashing adds on these pages can sometimes cause my old laptop to freeze up for a second or two when I switch between the different tabs.

Wow yet anther reason not to use the official forums. I love blizzard as a company, but they are really trying to nickel & dime their customers for every copper.
Having said that, I have loved every blizzard game I have ever played and will continue to play wow and their other games irregardless of advertising in battle.net or on the forums.
Michael Dec 19th 2008 11:17AM
I am now curious as to how Bliz having ads on the forums is translated into "nickel & dime their customers for every copper"
These are not costing us anything. If you don't like them, then block them. I seriously doubt you people bitch about the ads when you are surfing your porn sites.
My opinion, STFU. We pay for the access to their servers, they have the right to put those ads up if they want. If you disagree then FO and quit playing, that will show them.
Thander Dec 19th 2008 12:02PM
"irregardless" ? ...wow
