Blizzard adds advertising to the official forums

As for the design argument, everything is a matter of taste in that way -- if Blizzard doesn't feel the ads break their forums, then we probably won't see a change. They didn't, for example, put ads in between the forum posts, and there are no ads on the official front page (save for Blizzard's usual advertising of World of Warcraft itself). As for the second issue, that's a stickier one. The ads are served by a company called Atlas Solutions, which appears to be a division of Microsoft, which, you'll remember, is the same company that Blizzard recently made a deal with for ads on their Battle.net service. Right now, the ads are mostly for extended universe items from Blizzard partners like Upper Deck, but players are worried that an unsavory advertiser could get in there with a keylogger, and then suddenly half the forums are hacked.
That seems unlikely -- Blizzard will definitely have a strong say over what does and doesn't go up in those ads (no gold advertisers, for example), so as much as the Flash-based ads are a security risk, Blizzard certainly must think they're well protected against any issue like that. And finally, the question of whether it's right to show a paying audience ads is up to you -- Blizzard seems more than happy to charge for optional experiences in their game, and going on the forums certainly isn't a part of the game proper. They likely believe that while advertising ingame would be wrong, advertising in an "optional" place like the forums is consistent with their moneymaking policies so far. But the fans seem very against it -- we'll see what choices Blizzard decides to make from here.

Hahaha, just great!
(hope it not announces the future!)

I would like to see in-game billboards posted all around Orgrimmar for the card game. Then I'd like to be able to play the card game while hanging out.
No I wouldn't, but it'd be funny.

Firefox has a great plug in that I've been using for awhile now, especially for sites like Myspace. AdBlockPlus. Drop IE, grab Firefox and install the add on and forget about it. And if you have firefox its like a 50kb addon, and worth every bit of the free you pay for it.
Ads are used everywhere and with the global economy in the crapper getting extra revenue is a good move especially with 11 million people that could potentially view the ads. Can't blame Blizz for being safe, or greedy, whichever.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Dec 19th 2008 12:23PM
Yeah, but we can blame them if and when someone takes it into their head to add some malicious code to one of the adverts since it was their fault for allowing an outside ad company into their forums.
I’m of the opinion that if you pay for something you should be exempt from advertisements.
Eric Dec 19th 2008 12:42PM
Thats a decent point if it happens. But as it sits so far its just an annoyance that can be avoided. And I'm fairly certain that the ads get some sort of looking over, otherwise there is a serious flaw in planning.
But avoiding it is likely the best alternative unless Blizz takes them down which isn't very likely, they are fond of doing things their way. The ad blocker I mentioned blocks the site that the ads are from so it should remove them permanently once you right click and select ad block, if you can figure it out you can even block out all the ad modules that they stream to it in one shot.
It gets rid of myspace ads and thats saying something.
In the end I guess we'll all just have to see how it plays out...

Why is anyone reading the official forums anyway?
Kia Dec 19th 2008 11:56AM
I don't make a habit of going to their forums to begin with, but this surely won't make me want to go back anytime soon. Blizz's forums are already absolutely godawful. Making you fill in your birthday randomly, logging you out even -in the middle of posting-, no way to change how long you stay logged in for, etc. Ugh.
Koenig Dec 19th 2008 12:07PM
This is bad. I don't pay for WoW Insider, so I expect to see ads and even click on them occasionally. I pay for 2 WoW accounts and shouldn't have to see ads there.
Ferarro Dec 19th 2008 12:07PM
The ads don't break anything. They're simply annoying, just like any other ad in any other medium. *shrug*
Evi Dec 19th 2008 12:23PM
My problem is that the space where the actual posts go was already small enough. With ads, it's even smaller. I have to scroll the window to read posts consisting of only a few paragraphs!
Unfortunately, I could say the same thing for WoW Insider. No offense, but I really hate your new tiny center column. I understand you have a lot of content you want to show off, but the meat of the site shouldn't be completely overshadowed by all those links. The hierarchy of information is all out of whack.
Kadathwack Dec 19th 2008 12:30PM
One more reason not to go there, I guess.
I'm just confused why this is showing up now. New expansion, player numbers on the upswing, cash pouring in... they don't really need them.
Kyane Dec 19th 2008 12:42PM
What better time to do it? More players going to the forums more possible clicks more possible purchases.
It's not a big deal for me. AdBlock them if you really hate them that bad, and my carpal tunnel is bad enough as it is, having to scroll another 300px to get beyond that first banner ad isn't going to make my hand stop working when I'm sitting at a computer 10 hrs a day for work.
I'd like to be surprised at the outcry this has caused, but then again, changing the color of some armor has been deemed a "slap in the face" before, so now I've come to expect most of the WoW community to QQ first and think later.
Matt Jan 14th 2009 5:02PM
it's not like they're pop-ups. most people dont even notice banner ads as long as they dont talk to you or any of that annoying crap. if it takes some financial burden off of blizzard i'm fine with it. all the better to use that money for something cool.
Hoggersbud Dec 19th 2008 12:43PM
Well, color me baffled. People are bitching about this? Advertising on a web-based forum? Completely acceptable in principle, and as long as they moderate the advertisements, it's acceptable in practice.
If it wasn't, then Blizzard, getting to the party so late, well, it's kinda pointless.
At least they're not asking me about my embarrassing health problems.
Sheesh, if it really bothers you, then install some sort of advertisement blocker yourself. Don't expect me to feel anything but scorn about your irate overreaction though.
Jaxal Dec 22nd 2008 12:35PM
wtf is this.
seriously.
i just can't understand how the millions they make MONTHLY from subscription fees alone just isn't enough anymore.
not cool blizz.
Barnister Dec 19th 2008 12:50PM
No ads for me, thanks to adblock and noscript.
popeguilty Dec 19th 2008 12:54PM
Your argument against this being a security risk is facile. Blizzard has been unable to keep keylogger links off their forums; their opinion about whether or not their advertising company is safe is not enough. The WoW forums are one of the biggest targets for black-hat hackers and the like; giving them an easy, offsite target that can deliver content to users of Blizzard websites is just plain insanity.
Hoggersbud Dec 19th 2008 1:22PM
While certainly keyloggers still find ways to post on the forums, the website and the forums themselves have not been hacked, nor to my knowledge has the provider of the service.
Wicked Dec 19th 2008 12:59PM
It's really not that hard to block the ads, including in Internet Explorer, via Privoxy.
http://deathmite.blogspot.com for a screenshot and link, or just go to www.privoxy.org.
FF, IE, whatever. No ads.
Rankin Dec 19th 2008 12:56PM
One thing to remember is that anybody can view the WoW forums. The only thing our subscription does is allow us to post there.
