Blizzard adds advertising to the official forums

As for the design argument, everything is a matter of taste in that way -- if Blizzard doesn't feel the ads break their forums, then we probably won't see a change. They didn't, for example, put ads in between the forum posts, and there are no ads on the official front page (save for Blizzard's usual advertising of World of Warcraft itself). As for the second issue, that's a stickier one. The ads are served by a company called Atlas Solutions, which appears to be a division of Microsoft, which, you'll remember, is the same company that Blizzard recently made a deal with for ads on their Battle.net service. Right now, the ads are mostly for extended universe items from Blizzard partners like Upper Deck, but players are worried that an unsavory advertiser could get in there with a keylogger, and then suddenly half the forums are hacked.
That seems unlikely -- Blizzard will definitely have a strong say over what does and doesn't go up in those ads (no gold advertisers, for example), so as much as the Flash-based ads are a security risk, Blizzard certainly must think they're well protected against any issue like that. And finally, the question of whether it's right to show a paying audience ads is up to you -- Blizzard seems more than happy to charge for optional experiences in their game, and going on the forums certainly isn't a part of the game proper. They likely believe that while advertising ingame would be wrong, advertising in an "optional" place like the forums is consistent with their moneymaking policies so far. But the fans seem very against it -- we'll see what choices Blizzard decides to make from here.

I think you mean http://www.darkfallonline.com/ as darkfall.com is just an advertisement parking site. I'm sure they appreciate the links you're giving them though!

If you are using Firefox, download no script mod.

How to solve it ? Get Firefox and then get adblock; It makes all the adds going off. Simple enough ? :D

Last I checked the forums were publicly viewable, meaning the ads are hitting more than just people paying for the game. If people really want to get pissy about them Blizz can just make them hidden to people who login to their accounts. Honestly though it isn't a big deal... If the adds really bugged me I'd filter them out before they even hit my browser and think nothing more of it.

What ads? I don't see any ads? Unless you mean adds, and I didn't pull them.

Welcome to the new Blizzard and it's new corporate master Activision. Guarantee this is where it came down from, milking customers for every last dime has always been Activision's policy.

Did you ever stop to think that they may serve ads for a product or experience enhancement that could make your gameplay more enjoyable? Possibly some that many of the player base hadn't found on their own? WoW has a very diverse community in many ways, including tech savvy. Ad's don't always have to be a "bad" thing. If done right they can provide a value ad to the existing customer base.

its going right in activisions pocket you bitch.
Lorem Dec 19th 2008 3:23PM
Cry more. Just because you pay for a leased service doesn't give you the right to bitch and moan about the company who OWNS the site. Advertising is a way of life and get the fuck over it.
Heela Dec 19th 2008 4:08PM
Only a matter of time before we see in-game advertising.
Seannis Dec 19th 2008 5:45PM
There are ads...? o.O
Well... gotta love the AdBlock Plus, saves me from more ad nuisances than I care to count
PimpyMicPimp Dec 19th 2008 7:00PM
I actually appreciate this. I've been trying to spend less time there, this makes it that much easier!

Adblock Plus has just (20/12/08) been updated to remove the grey rectangle, so there's no need to install RIP anymore. If you installed ABP earlier than this, just go to Adblock Plus Preferences > Filters > Update All Subscriptions.
Dipole Moment Dec 20th 2008 10:27AM
Oops, spoke to soon.
Anyway, paste this filter into ABP preferences:
forums.worldofwarcraft.com#DIV(class=advertise-horz)
to get rid of the grey box.

The WoW forums are like barrens chat, best to be avoided. I've yet to see anything on the forums that is actually worthwhile.
As for the ads themselves. Blizzard is a business, not a non profit agency. No one is forcing you to click on the ads or buy what they're hawking. Either grow up or go play somewhere else.

The whole security issue would have been solved a long time ago if the 'optional forums' didn't require your actual log in to use them. It has always been a bad idea that blizzard never fixed.
