I totally agree with Kryptich - this looks like Activision horning in on what they said they would leave alone.
In fact, its my opinion (based off some of the developer comments that I have seen on the beta and live forums) that Blizzard was not 100% ready to release Wrath, but was forced to release it this quarter by Activision.
Personally, if they want to throw some adds in, fine: but put them on the bottom of the page. When I am at work, I have wowinsider, tankspot, worldofmatticus, and the official forums on my browser. I hate the way the flashing adds on these pages can sometimes cause my old laptop to freeze up for a second or two when I switch between the different tabs.
