Forum post of the day: I don't see any ads

After loading the first addon, you must subscribe to a list appropriate to your region. The second addon gets rid of the grey frame left where the ad was. The original poster gave us handy dandy instructions on how to use it:
- Load a random thread on the WoW forums, any will do. See that annoying grey frame?
- Right click on the frame.
- Go to RIP Advanced.
- First choose "Remove from this Domain"
- Go to RIP Advanced again, Next click "Remove all similar parent items."
The entire process took less than three minutes and my forums look just like they did before. For the most part we should be used to online advertising. You can just ignore them, but if you're really that annoyed by it do something about it. I also won't hear the objection that you don't use Firefox. You should. I'd check into how to remove ads for IE, but I'm not willing to load Exploder on either of my computers.
Thanks to Lure and everyone else who offered similar simple solutions. If only there were an addon to block the trolls, we'd be all set.

FYI - RIP does not work with Firefox 3.1 (it's in beta, so no big surprise there). Adblock, NoScript and FlashBlock work fine though
Chronnick Dec 19th 2008 3:05PM
Oh you are going to hear it about the IE remark. The whiners are online today in a BIG way.
Firefox is the greatest though.
Chronnick Dec 19th 2008 3:06PM
I had wrapped my second comment in opinion tags but the comment system erased.
I DON'T WANT TO GET INTO THE BROWSER WAR CRAP, THAT WAS OPINION AND I KNOW IT!
Eisengel Dec 19th 2008 8:18PM
I'm of the same opinion, although I like to use Icecat.
WoWInsider: Say, is there any way you could implement an 'ignore' function for certain commenter names (i.e. jerk-blocker)? I've found often that the same commenters will chew up a page or so with utter drek.

I got a three day ban for even mentioning it. cancelled the account of my three lvl 80 raiding toons and am putting them up for sale after jan 5th.
we pay for this.
warcraft is over.
JR Dec 19th 2008 3:33PM
So you're going to continue playing until the 5th, and then sell the account to someone who will continue paying the monthly subscription? Way to make a stand.
Reinard Dec 19th 2008 3:38PM
Okay. Rather, they'll support the thread and get FIRED! How about that? I'm SURE you'd do the same.
This game could do with less people like you anyway. Bye.
Basic Dec 19th 2008 3:41PM
That's BS, I agree. We pay monthly for the game, and the forums are Blizzard's portal to communicate with players and improve customer relations.
Their forums make them money. I feel no moral obligation to un-block their ads.
Midmainah Dec 19th 2008 3:49PM
MMO players are the biggest group of whiners I've ever seen in my life.
Ryan Dec 19th 2008 6:49PM
You pay for cable too and they still play commercials. Paying for a service doesn't mean you somehow have some right to no ads.
Andrew R. Dec 19th 2008 3:07PM
They deleted the thread. Way to go Blizzard. Just act like nothing ever happened.

Gogo D-roc forums!
Kermittheorc Dec 19th 2008 3:08PM
i don't the top banner, but the side banner ads crunch up the threads. that's not good.
on the bright side, since I've found Wowinsider, I don't bother as much with the forums; I get all the important updates here and without annoying trolls or meaningless QQ threads.
Rugger Dec 19th 2008 3:13PM
For FF users... get Adblock, and download install Filterset.G for the ad definitions list. I have been using this for a while now, and it is as about as clean as a website can come.
Basic Dec 19th 2008 3:43PM
Filterset.G seems to be getting old. If it works for you that's great, but I think EasyList + EasyElement are the current recommended filters.
Michael Dec 19th 2008 4:01PM
That would be too much work, you know why? "We pay for this" so give me what I want or I will QQ and cancel my account.
About the same as turn on the content filter if you dont want to see the cussing. But no, people would rather bitch about it then just filter it.
Riley Dec 19th 2008 8:23PM
filterset.g is completely outdated, when you get the newest adblock plus, it specifically tells you to uninstall it, because the functionality of it is now built into adblock
Rugger Dec 20th 2008 9:47AM
Thanks for the heads up on Filterset.G. Removed this morning and added EasyList and EasyElement.
