Phat Loot Phriday: Vile's Uglystick

I couldn't remember the last time we did a big two-handed mace (or as I like to call them, "facebasher"), so here's something to quest for this weekend, if you're into that sort of thing.
Name: Vile's Uglystick (Wowhead, Thottbot, Magelo)
Type: Uncommon Two-handed Mace
Damage/Speed: 350-525 / 3.30 (132.6 DPS)
Abilities:
Name: Vile's Uglystick (Wowhead, Thottbot, Magelo)
Type: Uncommon Two-handed Mace
Damage/Speed: 350-525 / 3.30 (132.6 DPS)
Abilities:
- +53 Strength, +80 Stamina
- Equip: Increases your parry rating by 53.
- Not a bad starter tanking weapon, especially for Death Knights, though really the only reason you'd take this one is if you really wanted a mace and were working through the late solo game. There are better maces later on, of course, but for this mace, the journey is really worth more than the destination -- see below.
- And the note on this one says "Once beaten, twice shy," which is of course a reference to the classic Great White tune (wow, what a row of hair metal classics in the beginning of that clip, right?), as well as a pun on "beaten" and "bitten," since "got beaten by the uglystick" is a euphemism for saying someone is hideously ugly. Get all that? Sure, we explained the joke, and probably ruined it, but at least I got a Great White video linked in there.
- It would be fun if you could actually see mobs getting uglier every time you hit them with this, but you'll just have to imagine it. It might make PvP more fun, though.
Like we said, the quests are probably more fun than getting the actual item on this one, but the questline will also open up some Knights of the Ebon Blade dailies to do. And even if you're 80 already, there's lots of gold to be gotten from questing, so if you haven't done this stuff yet, look it up this weekend.
Getting Rid of It: Vendors will give you 13g 64s 13c for it, or it'll disenchant into a Greater Cosmic Essence (with a chance of a Small Dream Shard).

Huh, a two-hander that looks suspiciously like it was designed to be a DK tanking weapon... That's at least 5 kinds of crazy right there.
oh and people who say "first" are lame

LOL, I did a double take at the San Francisco comment. I had almost forgotten we had a baseball team! >.

"Not a bad starter tanking weapon, especially for Death Knights"
Who the hell other then a DK is going to use a 2H to tank with? Not a Prot Pally or a Prot Warrior, and the increase to parry matters little to a Bear tank.
This is a DK tank piece plain and simple.

Breaking news: Fury warriors specced for Titan's Grip can use two-handed weapons AND a shield.
Phaelan Dec 20th 2008 12:01AM
hate to say it, but this mace sucks, the De-Raged Waraxe is a ton better http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41816 and you get it sooner (75 Zul'Drak)

Why would tank take crit over parry rating? Sure its better for "2 button DPS" but for tanks?
Wyldshank Dec 20th 2008 12:22AM
@ toddcore
Breaking news: A Fury warrior specced for Titan's Grip using two-handed weapons AND a shield ISN'T a TANK. Its a Fury warrior with a 51 pt dps talent carrying a shield. Can you pretend your a tank? sure. Should you? Not if you don't want the party/raid to laugh at you as you fail. So again, this weapon is meant for DK's to use not a lawl tank Fury warrior.

A good player can "pretend" to fury tank through the level 80 instances. They're not that hard. I don't know how well you'd perform in heroics with a spec like that, but it'll get you through all the normal mode content if you're having a hard time finding tanks and don't want to respec.

I have now tanked every heroic except for Utgarde Pinnacle as a 18/53/0 fury warrior using a 2h and a shield. Pinnacle asks a little too much of a healer: I'd spec prot for that just to treat them nicely. But everything else, I can tank just fine as full fury.
Annerajb Dec 20th 2008 12:22PM
i seen fury warriors tanked 4h on heroic mode it requires a lot of healing but the way our guild does it it dosnt matter anyway since they die way too fast so healer's dont have to be spamming hl for a long time.
BWarner Dec 20th 2008 12:51PM
Yeah, I'm going to have to go with "I can tank fine while specced Fury, at least through the normal instances". Am I specced specifically for tanking? Not really. I mean, no, I'm not. Can I tank perfectly well in this setup? You bet. Only caveat, you're going to have to go "old school" - DPS has to follow markings, and go a bit slow on the AoE, at least for the first 15 seconds or so of the fight. Maybe throw in some CC, if really necessary (shouldn't be, but can't hurt to utilize that option). Works more than fine.

I'm not going to argue about fury tanks or parry rating vs crit. I just want to comment on "And the note on this one says "Once beaten, twice shy," which is of course a reference to the classic Great White tune (wow, what a row of hair metal classics in the beginning of that clip, right?)"
Okay, maybe it's stupid and I'm splitting hairs, but people are starting to reach a little far when looking for pop-culture homages in WoW. The phrase "once bitten, twice shy" goes back to Aesop, from around 500 BC. If the quest had you burning down a night club, then yes, it would be a reference to Great White. This was just a play on a very well-known idiom.
Maerius Dec 20th 2008 2:13PM
The phrase "once bitten, twice shy" was around way before Great White put it into one of their songs. It's usage dates back to at least the 18th century (by the English author, Surtees) and was used in music lyrics by at least one other band before Great White (the opening lyrics from the Yes song, "City of Love").
I'd hate to think that the first thing that comes to most people's minds when seeing that phrase is the awful 80's hair band, Great White.... :)

Sorry, didn't realize Tyrean already addressed my point right before my post - guess I should've read all the comments before I chimed in myself.
