A guildie asked me to help him out with some macros for his holy pally today. A beacon of light macro that would target his set focus. I don't have a pally to test this on however and he said my macro does not work. would it look something like this?
/cast [target=focus] beacon of light
or am I missing something?

I'd use
/target focus
/cast beacon of light
/targetlasttarget

Your Macro looks like it should work, honestly. He probably just misspelled something or put in an extraneous space or something, it happens all the time.
My rogue has a macro for Tricks of the Trade.
#showtooltip Tricks of the Trade
/cast [target=focus, exists, nodead] Tricks of the Trade
It specifies that the target of my focus must exist and must be alive, i.e. that I have to have a valid target set as my focus (the first line is to display the cooldown and cost of the skill). It works flawlessly, and one could conceivably plug any spell into it and have that spell wrk equally well.
