Remember the rules scott gives here are not absolute. There can be items that fall to certain classes even when the rules here say otherwise.
The problem is that most guilds need a ruletype regarding loot in order to prevent "purple fever" syndrome.
And even then all systems have flaws that can be exploited or abused.
Both the badge-system as the set drops for different classes is a way blizzard tries to lower the importance of pure item drops.
In the end you as a player should just follow one simple rule:" DONT BE GREEDY REGARDING LOOT" and all will be fine
