If you're doing it with rolls, you really have to. Otherwise you have (for casters) Paladins rolling on plate, Paladins/Shamans rolling on mail, Paladins/Shaman/Druids rolling on leather, and Paladins/Shaman/Druids/Priests/Mages/Warlocks rolling on cloth.
Some classess get put at a severe disadvantage compared to others there.
In general, common sense is required. Someone tried to tell me I couldn't roll on a clear upgrade because it had crit. As a Holy Priest, crit is an awesome stat for us now. I told him quite clearly that I was rolling, and if he didn't like it, he could find another healer.
The healer shortage works in our favor, do not piss us off. ;)
