Wrath 101: Resilience at Level 80

One common question I've been asked and often seen thrown in the general and trade channels is "what is the new Resilience cap?" The answer isn't a straightforward one. It's important to first understand what Resilience means and why it's so important for PvP. Resilience is the character attribute that reduces the chance a player will get hit by a critical strike, reduces the damage done by critical strikes and damage over time effects, and reduces the amount drained by mana draining effects. It's an awesome mechanic and is probably my favorite item stat. More Resilience means higher survivability in PvP, but conversely -- because it takes up valuable stat points -- means players generally deal less damage than players dressed up in PvE gear.
1% of Resilience will reduce the chance to be critically hit by 1%, reduce the damage taken from crits by 2.2% (improved from 2% in Patch 3.0.3), reduce the damage done by DoTs by 1%, and reduce the amount drained by mana draining effects by 1%. While there is no limit to the reduction in critical hit chance, the damage taken from critical strikes can only be reduced by a maximum of 33% (up from 25% in The Burning Crusade). This means that 15% of Resilience is the optimum number and any more points invested in Resilience rating past that point will be inefficient.
Here's the kicker, though. While it only took a mere 39.4 Resilience rating per 1% at Level 70, and because the damage reduction was capped at 25%, players only needed 12.5% Resilience or 492.5 Resilience rating to hit the so-called Resilience cap. At Level 80, however, the rating required per 1% of Resilience is 82. With the new damage reduction capped at 33% and each point of Resilience reducing critical strike damage by 2.2%, this means the new Resilience cap is at a staggering 1,230.
There isn't even enough Resilience in the game to reach that, even if you were equipped with full Deadly Gladiator items and fully enchant and gem for it even with three Jewelcrafter-only Mystic Dragon's Eyes. Even if you apply head and shoulder enchants with Resilience or ignore socket bonuses to put Mystic Autumn's Glows, you would still only barely break 900 Resilience rating. And that would be gimping your damage or healing considerably.
This means that we have a lot to look forward to in terms of gear improvement as the Arena or PvP seasons progress. Blizzard is leaving itself a lot of wiggle room to create more Resilience-laden gear and that means it will take a while before we see the full Resilience on Resilience PvP that Blizzard expects. The dominance of burst damage will be around for a while, as players slowly accumulate the Resilience needed to survive more than a couple of hits. Eventually, that magic number of 1,230 will be attainable and PvP matches will take their proper sweet time.
Arthas awaits and so do your questions. Find the answers you've been looking for that will help you with your journey into Northrend and to level 80 with Wrath 101.

I agree completely. Resilience is also my favorite stat. My survivability in BG, WG, and Arena as a result is VERY noticable from my pre-s5 heroic blue gear. Man, did I love having 18k mana on my Holy pally, but what good is it when just about any spec mage can 2-shot me?
Every piece that I buy now is in direct order to "How much will my resilience go up?" The biggest jump = next purchase. It was very painful making the decision to replace my Girdle Of The Warrior Magi (VH - revered) which had 42 crit rating and a yellow socket with the Hateful Girdle Of Salvation with 14 mp5 (ugh) and a BLUE socket.
Why.....why did Blizzard put blue sockets in PvP gear? (grumble...)
Why? Why did I replace it? 44 resilience. In one piece, that is HUGE. It had to be done.
I've done 5s now with shammys & priests. They can out-heal me in every sense. But they drop like a stone. No resilience. I'm usually one of the last men standing.
My resilience is now at 531, and expect it to be well over 600 by the time I'm done. I'm probably the only pally on my server in full savage (I know, the blues suck) but I am a HUGE fan of matching sets. It still draws ooohs and awws from peeps walking by. And Horde always give me a second look before they decide to try to gank me.
Anyway, enough babbling. Love your work, Zach. Hope to see a lvl 80 PvP spec from you in The Light And How To Swing It sometime soon.

531 resilience is ballpark what, 6% chance 12% reduction? So that mage that could hit you for 9k crit is now hitting you for ~7920?
Pardon me if I'm less than impressed.
Here is the issue:
People assume that everyone will even BOTHER being in full resilience gear. DPS never wore full resilience, never will.
Yet healing needs resilience - badly - and the spellpower is destroyed with interrupts, silences, stuns and other CCs.
I'm sorry but even if I was in full resilience gear, I would still be getting chain CCed, unable to cast most of the time and when I can cast there are healing debuffs. This is against dps who do *NOT* have full resilience and do *NOT* need it.
In fact, the DPS will continue to go up. Even if you are resilience capped you will still find people in the top PVE damage gear going for burst to make the match 2v1, 3v2, 5v4 as fast as possible.
The people playing on these DPS teams skyrocket up, get high ratings while those who actually need resilience act as the punching bags for ADHD kids and their obviously advantaged setups.
And so, Mr. Paladin, I wouldn't claim that resilience is why you live and lesser armored folks die. With where melee DPS is right now priests are flattened rather easily, due to lack of armor, lack of being able to cast and *more* not less CC.
Where blizzard can pretend that the games were ever drawn out BESIDES compared to where they are now is beyond me. I think people got a little emotionally scarred by the few drain teams that were out there to counter burst teams.
I think it's laughable that they think there are "so many ways to get out of CC" when there really are no more than before, yet more CC was added.
It is simply a joke right now for anyone in a non-burst setup, and I don't know how I'm supposed to get enough resilience to matter when most matches end with me getting insta-gibbed immediately.

well, I'm around 700 resi warlock and I can sometimes survive against ret/dk with a holy pally watchin my back, but I'm completly defenseless against rogues + any dps or bm hunters. They just take me down i 2-3 GCDs. This is the wrath pvp for locks, go reroll or struggle. even 900 resi wont help, cuz u cant get a bloody s5 weap/offhand without ~2k rating which u wont get to obviously so u're stuck in about 800 resi if you don't have brutal gear.

I've read the logic of, "Eventually, the pvp resilience gear will cause some folks to survive past the initial 15 seconds, at which point the burst team will then be worried about their survivability, and the result will be that they acquire more pvp gear for themselves."
Blizzard seems to believe this, and I can see the reasoning behind it, but I have to agree resilience's comment; if you're dps is so OP that you have a greater than 50% chance of making the game a 2v1, 3v2, 5v4, then what is the incentive to penalize yourself with pvp gear?
My guess, especially with the t8 gear outbound shortly, is that dps is simply going to become so ridiculously high, that all you're going to see is dps teams spamming damage. Unless the resilience effect is DRASTICALLY increase whereby the damage reduction is substantial, I'm can't see folks getting more than three or four pvp pieces for the stamina buffs, and running the rest as PvE gear.
I only run one character, a Druid, and I normally run it as Resto or a Resto/Feral hybrid for cc options. I have to say, however, that I'm inclined currently to respec full balance, get all my +crit gear on, and obliterate our opposition with my insanely hurtfull rogue counterpart in 2v2. Even using my two instant heals, swiftmend (+glyph) and nature's swiftness, I cannot keep my partner alive again pally/dk mage/dk and other high dps output teams.
Here's my prediction: Blizzard is going to have to 1) alter the damage reducitions on all pvp gear or 2) increase the stats on pvp gear so that dps output isn't reduced as much for the resilience gear.
Thoughts?

Listen to me.
1. Resilience isn't helping enough, you WILL die.
2. Reduce burst damage.
3. Nerf dk/rogue/paladin/hunter/mage/druid.
4. Buff warlock and shaman for survivability.
5. PvE gear is only your chance to defeat your enemy target.
6. If Blizzard don't care about it = Exit wow forever.
Very simple.

Your use of nerf makes me want to vomit. Instead of nerfing classes you don't like, come up with some more useful like the other posters here have done. I'm not going to listen to you, pretentious git.

Excuse me, but I'm telling truth. If a class is overpowered, that's death knight, EVERYONE will reroll to death knight.
As you can see, there is only death knights and paladins:
http://www.arenajunkies.com/rankings/2v2/
Can you see two warlocks? NO! Warlocks are dead and has rerolled. Look at death knights, tons of them!
Resilience isn't enough to survive because of burst damage, and Blizzard has acknowlegde about this.
Sorry for my english, I could much as I can :)

Join a nax raid gear and tell them you will only raid in full pvp gear. See how far that gets you. See the point? By the same token if im wearing full pvp gear with resilience on all of it a player in full pve gear should have a rediculously hard time killing me.
If you dont agree then wtf is the point of resilience gear? To all you healers saying well its so easy for DPS to kill me. ITS SUPPOSED TO BE. If you spec for support and healer you are a FREE HK. Thats the ROLE YOU CHOSE. Of course you should have your partner in pvp be able to help with that but still.
Im sooooooo sick and tired of healer classes gettin mad when they go down like a cheap whore and expect to win with shadow word pain etc.
As for the point of resilience. Well frankly it pisses me off to watch a noobknight or a retnoobadin in full pve just run over people. Hell I cant take many hits from them because resilience is broken.
The solution? Make resilience effect what it does now and ALSO regular damage. The purpose of pvp is to SURVIVE longer not 30 second zerg matches where skilless noobs press that do big damage in pve gear mash a few buttons and someone dies.
A guy once said "Cause 30 minute matches are fun amirite?"
To which i say
"Cause queing for 5 mins a match and then dyin in 30 seconds is fun amirite?"
Sure it is...until it happens to YOUR ass.

IMO,
resilience is the worst stat ever introduced into WOW!
base stats alone with a valid armor rating and a good balanced setup would suffice to make for even gameplay.
having to rely on gear that favors one stat, cripples the game entirely for all.
nuff said.
