Phat Loot Phriday: The Fleshshaper

Name: The Fleshshaper (Wowhead, Thottbot, Wowdigger)
Type: Epic One-hand Dagger
Damage/Speed: 206-310 / 1.80 (143.3 DPS)
Abilities:
- +22 Agility, +58 Stamina
- Improves hit rating by 27, and attack power by 76
- Very nice dagger no matter what you're doing. The speed is a little slow (most daggers at this level are at 1.40), so some Rogues may complain that they lose a little bit of DPS with this one (in general, a faster weapon is better when you're aiming for poison procs, since a weapon that hits more often has more chances to apply poison), but especially if you're hunting for an upgrade in the Heroics, odds are that this will help, either in the MH or OH slots. There's an upgrade in Naxx, but for five mans, this is an excellent melee dagger to have.
- Plus, it looks weird. It's like you're cutting someone up with a horn!
Getting Rid of It: Vendors will give you 19g 82s 85c for it, or, being epic, it'll disenchant into a Abyss Crystal.

Feedback: Bring back cool weapon features to Phat Loot Phriday. These last several have been excruciatingly boring - just plain weapons/armor. What happened to the ones with sweet procs or other special effects/purposes? It takes more than just stats/purple to make it Phat.

I agree. What happened to all the fun items?
I vote for the Super Simian Sphere as a Phat Loot (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37254)

This dagger is seriously outclassed by Librarian's Paper Cutter (faster speed means more poison/focused attacks procs). Unfortunately, some of the Naxx ones suffer from the same slowness. Save them for PvP, I guess.

For most rogues this weapon is completely pointless, it's much easier to pick up a Lightblade Rivener from Kirin Tor rep or the insanely fast Librarian's Paper Cutter which I see no less than three of on the AH any time a check. To top it all off the paper cutter sells for 150g on my server which is ridiculously cheap at 80 for such a good weapon.

Not much of a PvE dagger, but it's a really good PvP Mutilate Dagger (where slower speeds are still favored). Great place to start if you can't raid for some good weapons

@Nintai - It sells for 150g on your server?
Heh, I just looked on our auction house and there's one on there for 2500g...

As was said before and I will say again, slow speeds are wonderful for mutilate specs, be they PvP or PvE. Seeing this dagger made my rogue drool.

Slow speeds *used* to be wonderful for Mutilate. Nowadays the idea is to have fast/fast daggers and get as many poison applications and Focused Attacks procs as possible to get energy back. Your mutilate hits for less, but you get more mutilates with all of the return in energy. A pair of Librarian's Paper Cutters would probably put out more DPS than this and an LPC offhand. The top DPS mut dagger right now is only 1.4 speed (Webbed Death).
(clarification, I'm talkin' PVE here. PVP seems to favor the bursty slow/fast pairing of weapons)

Does anyone run any backstab-based dagger spec anymore, e.g. combat daggers?
Or are they just dead in the water.

Me!
Yeah I know i's not "cool", I don't care :D
Circ Dec 27th 2008 9:33AM
Yeah, as far as this 'phat loot' column goes, this was a bad choice as the Fleshshaper is entirely obsolete.
#12, you are (currently) wrong. Try googling 'rogue pocket guide'.

This is a great Mutilate PVP weapon for rogues. The slow speed and corresponding high damage range will make for some nice mutilate crits.
It's not ideal for PVE raiding in general, as the author stated, since you want a faster speed for increased poison procs. However, if you are currently using a much weaker dagger, this can suffice until you get something more suited to raiding(Librarian's Paper Cutter is usually cheap on the AH and great for raiding.)
It is a nice dagger for Solo PVE, however, since mobs will likely die within one CS-Mutilate-Eviscerate combo, so the bigger mutilate damage will help.
