WoW, Casually: Loot

Ah the holidays. It's a time for families and friends getting together, children laughing, peace on Azeroth... and loot. Lots and lots of loot. Buying loot. Giving loot. Getting loot. Whether in the real world or in-game, when this time of year comes around, loot is all around us. So it seems as good a time as any to talk about casual players and loot.
I've actually wanted to tackle this topic ever since a comment in the leveling before Wrath column. Commenter Rob said that for speedy leveling, you should never loot unless you need to -- implying only for collection quests. So I want to spend a little time explaining my position on looting.
Loot. Or, to be more clear... Loot!
Loot all the time. Loot everything. Loot, loot, loot.
The argument against looting is that it takes up too much time and you can always get everything you need from your high level main or the AH.
Now, this is a column by a casual player for casual players. This is often lost on some readers, even though the word Casually is in the title and I often throw in an extra casual in there, just to emphasize the subject matter (see the Winter Veil guide and the Patch 3.0.8 guide for examples). Casual players don't necessarily have a stable of level 80s from whom to take cash and twink items. We often have a lot of alts, each with their own professions. And we tend to solo a lot because getting into groups takes time that we often don't have -- which means our instance gear is sorely lacking. So getting bankrolled by a main and shopping heavily at the Auction House are not assumptions that can be made about the casual player.
The Spousal Unit is a hardcore raider. He plays every free moment and many moments that are arguably not free. As I write this, he is tanking 10 man Naxx. And he completely agrees with me. Loot, loot, loot. How else are you going to save up for a cool ride? (Oh no, now I have this song running through my head).
Here are some tips for maximizing your loot and minimizing the time it takes to do it:
- Autoloot: Go to Game Menu, Interface, Controls and check the Autoloot box. It not only saves a lot of time, but it makes it much easier and more efficient to Herb, Mine, Skin and Fish.
- Get the biggest bags you can afford: Netherweave bags are 16 slots and tend to be cheaper than Traveler's Backpacks and Mooncloth Bags because they are BoE. You can usually get them for 10 to 15 gold. Running back to sell is time consuming and destroying things is inefficient when you are short on cash.
- Make a Bank Alt: Bank alts are good for two things: holding things you don't have room for in your bank and selling things on the AH. Any time you head back to town, mail anything you want to save or sell to your bank alt to free up bank space.
- Use Auctioneer: But only put it on your Bank Alt. Auctioneer is very heavy on the memory usage. The data in Auctioneer is only as good as how often you scan, so do it once a day. Also, you need to use it intelligently. Auctioneer doesn't know that Inscription requires low end herbs for research and that Peacebloom should be sold for 5g a stack, not 20s like back in the old days.
- Vendor Grays: You've probably seen this on the loading screen tips as well. Grays aren't used for quests or crafting so you can safely sell them to a vendor. If you are short on bagspace, then destroy grays except for weapons. Starting from around level 40, gray weapons will vendor for gold.
- AH Whites: If you don't need it for crafting or questing, then someone else probably does. Some things are faction specific or far too common, so make sure you're not selling them for less on the AH than what a vendor will give you. I find that the market for Wicked Claws, for example, is not too strong on my server, so I just vendor those.
- Disenchant and/or AH Greens/Blues/Purples you can't use: Sometimes the disenchanted value of an item is greater than what someone is willing to buy it for. Anything of the Boar, for example, is not going to sell -- who needs the combination of Strength and Spirit? And while getting a world drop of an BoE Epic Item can get your heart pumping, when you find out it's just another Icemail Jerkin, you may be disappointed.
- Keep AH spending to a minimum: Some classes are very gear dependent and you need to fill in the gaps by keeping an eye out for bargains on the AH, but any gear you get after level 50 will be replaced with something uber within a couple levels after reaching Outland. Unless you think AH shopping is a whole lot of fun, your time will be better spent questing and gathering more loot.
And on a more serious note, I wish you all happy holidays that are completely drama free.

yes... loot! who knows when a krol blade could drop when killing random things in wpl. it happened to me once after being there for my first time within the first 20 or so kills. nobody ever knows when the rng will strike gold.

I got me a lil Macaw companion..
My own Pirates bird to follow me around came as loot...

I totally agree with this article. I have a level 80, but my low level alts all loot everything they find. This makes them pretty much self-supporting once their rich uncle has bought them some 16-slot bags :-).
A couple of extra tips for banker alts ...
1. Think about what you're storing in your bank slots. After the first couple of bags, you're paying 25g per bag slot + the bag cost. How much is it costing you in bank space to keep stocked up on Murloc Eyes?
2. If you've filled all your bank bag slots with 16-slotters, then the cheapest way to get extra bank space is to create a guild just for your banker alt and buy guild bank tabs. (The cost per bag slot of moving to 18 or 20 slot bags is much more than the cost per slot of a guild bank).

ADdin my 2 cent to this post:
Looting= Mats, greens, epics, blues, cloth etc looting from 1-80 is on average 8050g by selling trash to vendor and auctioning white+ www.stats4wow.com/1-80
So u are missing on gold if u dont loot.
Also looting takes like what? 2-3 sec adding that to say 1000mobs =33minutes. In those 33 mins lets say you looted:
30stacks of chilled meat.
1 sword of jin (the epic levle 80)
15-25 greens
2-3 blues
10stacks of cloth
i wont go into details but u just made 3000g. (Ofc all this is theory)
Now lets sayyou got to 80 w/o looting. You need to farm gold for you fyer. SO you are going to farm say 4-5 hours + the looting time.
Get your facts right Mr.BOB

The AH is good when you need to patch a hole that drops don't give you of course, but some items are rare enough you will either 1) Never see them or 2) Pay through the nose for them.
I am assuming most casual players don't have multiple toons at 70 (let alone 80) to buy them what they need or powerlevel the crafting professions for them of course so often loot will be the only way to get the better items.
Greys are your friends of course as are large slot bags. I would recommend an automatic "sell grey" macro or add on, so in case you forget to sell your greys, they aren't taking up space.
Hmm, maybe that can be your next topic for casuals... what addons you can use that are not difficult (that is heavily requiring configuration) and make the game easier.
JDKenada Dec 27th 2008 12:30PM
Auctioneer? Pre-Wrath maybe.
Sorry, but it isn't nearly as good as it was.
Snowy Dec 27th 2008 12:49PM
Actually, Auctioneer is back to what it used to be. If you get the latest release version, there is a SCAN button once more, after a full scan a mouse over of any stack of items will tell you how much they are worth, and well.. it just seems to work the way that it used to at least for me and those in my guild.

AutoProfit is a great addon for vendoring grays, just talk to any vendor, and click the gold button in the corner and all your grays are sold at once
Kvr Dec 27th 2008 2:13PM
Thats really what I needed. Thanks :)
Amaxe Dec 27th 2008 4:40PM
I use Minimalist. I just configure it to sell vendor trash and it does it whenever I talk to a vendor without my needing to do anything
Zane Dec 28th 2008 9:59AM
The sweet Feature (I use AutoProfitX) is when you turn on AutoSell, that way you can coast past a vendor, click to chat with them and let your inventory get a little cleared, making a little gold (sometimes decent amounts) and I also use an AutoRepair on some FuBar addon, so I auto repair/autosell with one click. Super handy handy :)

In the past week I have been leveling my Mage to 80 (Which I just hit moments ago thank you very much) a bit more seriously than I had been. I started out at level 75 this week and within that short amount of time I have gotten enough to pay for ALL of my training up till 80, to pay for all my profession training up to their respective levels, buy Cold Weather Training, and buy a whole load of Snowballs to save for the non Winters Veil Months. For the times I have gone into Instances I have bought potions, elixirs and made my own foods. I have probably spent a good 2-3k just on everything there.
Now, as I have finished hitting 80, and looting all the way there, I have about 2k worth of mats for the AH from DEing my greens and blues that either were replaced or I didn't need. I also have a good thousand golds worth of Cooking Materials and other odds and ends that I am about to put on the AH.
As for the gold that I have looted and gained from Questing, I am up to a little over 2k in Gold on my person.
LOOTING is IMPORTANT!
Cyanea Dec 28th 2008 7:57AM
I agree with you.
A guildmate and I just leaves the loot on FFA when we're questing around and lets me loot everything because "it's a waste of time". I'm a "hardcore" player with two eighties that bankroll my alts, and I still loot every kill. Looting and selling greys (easily done with an addon like AutoProfit) adds up to a LOT of money. I spent three hours questing on my Paladin in Nagrand and made over 50g from just selling greys. That MORE than covers the cost of repairs, food, drink, etc. I don't have any professions on that character, and went from having 49g when I stepped through the Dark Portal to almost 500g when I shipped off to Northrend. I'd wager a guess and say that most of that comes from looting.
Plus, it's awfully nice to do for skinners, which is something two of my alts do. :D

"A guildmate and I just leaves the loot on FFA when we're questing around and lets me loot everything because "it's a waste of time"."
That sentence is so supposed to read "A guildmate just leaves..." Yay for replying to Wowinsider posts at 7AM >.

Definitely agree with getting the biggest bags you can. Less stuff destroyed and fewer trips to a vendor/mailbox means more time actually questing and things, as well as more money.

Cool ride? Every time I remember the Hog, I think this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UWRypqz5-o (or, if you're a bike doco fan, this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7zot_7mJKI )

In addition to auctioneer, there are several addons that will tell you the vendor price of an item. I believe one of these is included in Auctioneer's advanced version (now known as auctioneer complete).
Informant.
If you turn off auctioneer on your non-bank alts, at least leave that part on. It really helps when you're trying to decide which grey to destroy. Sometimes you'll even have a grey that is worth more than a green (and if you've been scanning enough with auctioneer, you'll be able to be roughly accurate in that). Informat can really help your earning power.
I keep a couple of alts around dedicated to managing auctions and excess inventory - all of them with large bags and all their bank bag slots bought. I send mats, items to auction, and items to disenchant between them.
Unlike the blogger, I do keep auctioneer active on all my toons. That added memory doesn't slow down play - it just slows down loading into the game. I keep it active so I can have access to the data on item values at any time.
Even on a tank, you can level and tank all the way up on quest-gear. Everything else can be auctioned or disenchanted for the twink community.
Some people I know vendor greens and even blues. That's a big waste of potential income. Even for junk items, disenchanting is a better choice. If you don't have an alt with high enchanting, make one - I have an alt who's only purpose is to stand next to the mail box in Thunder bluff (lowest lag horde city - and short walk between key points) and d/e things, then auction the mats. If you don't have the time for that, make friends with someone who does and come to an arrangement.
As for instancing... while leveling you're not going there for the gear. You're going there to...:
1. Have fun. If you're like me, Maraudon and BRD are fun -because- they're long.
2. Learn to play your role in groups.
3. Gain faster XP (sometimes instances are faster, sometimes slower - depends on which instance and at what level).
4. Complete high XP quests.
5. Earn achievements.
Don't sweat the gear drops until you're in the high 70s. Just write down the names of the ninja looters so you know who to avoid when you -do- hit the high levels.
Wintersdark Dec 27th 2008 7:28PM
There's an addon called Karnicrap that allows you to define autoloot lists.
You can have it sort out greys whose stack sell value is below a certain point (good for differentiating between unstacking quasi-valuable items and stacking items that are worth more per bag slot space). Also, you can set thresholds for food/water/potion looting, etc.
I love it. I can loot, but I don't fill my bags with random crap.
Not looting at all? That's just silly. BoE's sell well - even lower level ones - thanks to those who DON'T loot and shop at ah's. The very hardcore may level faster w/o looting, but are you someone who's going to grind that hardcore? I mean, I know I don't work nearly that hard at levelling personally. The fraction of time lost looting, just mere seconds, just doesn't matter.
Clevins Dec 27th 2008 5:04PM
You can set Auctioneer to only load when you enter the AH. IN fact, th at's its default. So keep that setting, leave INformant on all the time.
And it' said above, but bears repeating... with autoloot looting takes so little time that it's silly not to loot. You're not going to level appreciably faster by not looting.
Lilene Dec 27th 2008 5:56PM
Also, by looting everything from corpses you'll make your friendly neighborhood skinner (or herbalist/miner, once you're in Outland and beyond) much happier. Sure this doesn't benefit you directly, but it doesn't actually *hurt* or anything to be nice to people. I promise.
