An avowed non-PvPer can't get enough of Lake Wintergrasp

I admit that what first drew me there was greed. I heard that it was the richest source of mining nodes for the faction that controls it (as well as Eternal drops.) I was only level 73 when I first zoned in and knew I was going to get pwned by all the level 80s running amok, but to my surprise there turns out to be a feature that levels the playing field: siege vehicles.
Hoping into a catapult or manning a tower cannon eliminates the level difference between you and your opponent. In no time, I was laying waste to the enemy and racking up the Honor Points. I was suddenly having so much fun that I forgot to look for mining nodes (which is good, since the roaming mobs in the zone are level 80.)
Now, when I log on, the first thing I do is check how long until the next Wintergrasp battle starts (two and a half hours after the last one ends). For those who haven't tried any kind of WoW PvP I recommend trying your hand at piloting a Demolisher in Wintergrasp at least once. You may find yourself enjoying the game in a whole new way.

Wintergrasp is the world PvP to end all world PvP's. I enjoy it a lot, and I'm sure I"ll enjoy it more once I get time to scour the area for resources.
Which eternals are floating around in there? Are they all available?
vazhkatsi Dec 28th 2008 9:52PM
all the eternals are there, on the map there are 6 different areas, when you control wintergrasp, you can see revenants who have a 100-300% drop rate of crystals, except for life.

I feel exactly like you about pvp.. perhaps I will give it a try
Prot Dec 28th 2008 12:45PM
As a Prot Paly I find PvP very tough. I don't have the patience to get new gear, respec and then relearn how to play. But Wintersgrasp has saved me. I was able to get the honorable kills achievements with ease in there. All I need to do is hop into a cannon and start blowing away at the alliance. And, when that is done I just run into the middle of the fray, Bubble myself and start dispelling and stunning people left and right. In one session I was able to rack up 160+ honorable kills and close to 4k honor.
I may suck at PvP but wintersgrasp gives me the chance to have fun with it at least.

Before you can build a vehicle it's a bit rough on lower level toons, and after the relic is exposed it's very hard to contribute to the defense or capture unless you're a tough level 80. (Even then, I suggest thinking otherwise before charging into an area-effect mess which reminds me of the old days of AV.)
If you're a little low, stand back in a demolisher and fire into the mouth of the relic room. There will be a huge throng of people on foot and if they run out of targets, they'll come get you, but you'll certainly do more damage and live longer.

am i the only one?
Kazden-SWC Dec 28th 2008 12:54PM
Also, the popular theory for attackers is that once the relic is exposed you should build catapults and charge in, basically using their flamethrower as AE damage and getting 30k bonus health to get you through the quagmire and into the relic room.
It's a fine idea. I just don't suggest it if you're in the lower 70s, because you don't actually want to get that close. Thus, the demolisher.

AM i the only one who can't login to WoW?

Stop spamming and use the tech support forum on the WoW website

I love PvP and I really don't enjoy Wintergrasp. It's a clusterfuck of 2-button PvP that is just boring and lacks skill. It barely counts as a PvP encounter.

Short of visiting Dalaran and talking to the Wintergrasp NPC, is there an easy way to determine when the next battle will take place? I find I've been often missing them while I'm out questing.
Leto Dec 28th 2008 1:21PM
In Dalaran there's a Wintergrasp Battlemaster right next to the Wintergrasp portal who can tell you what time is remaining until the next battle.

There are a few addons that synchronize a timer by talking to the Wintergrasp NPC. I haven't tried any of them, though.

Watch your map. It'll update with the state of the battle, even if you're in like vanilla Azeroth or something.

This has half-inspired me to check Wintergrasp out.
I'm a non-mouse using, keyboard-turning, absolute PvP nubcake. Lifetime kills around the 300 mark, and that was purely to get marks for the Private's Tabard, and then a later run through Thunder Bluff for an assault on the boss (40 of us all using Nogginfogger, most fun!).
Can't say I'm a great fan of the multitude of vehicle/mount quests in Wrath, I'm sure they're totally awesome but my laptop just fails haha. I'll upgrade eventually. But anyway... I've kinda hit a boredom wall; heroics run, gear bought, badges spent, lore mastered.
Between grinding Netherwing rep next week, sounds like I'll be sat in an Alliance Battle Tank (or whatever).
Happy killing, everyone!

The music made me stop and go, "This is pretty good. Now why and the hell is it playing in the game's only pure PVP zone?"
This was when the Horde controlled it and I wasn't in a fight. That is the entire reason I gave Wintergrasp a try.
Jason Dec 28th 2008 1:57PM
I love the Wintergrasp music as well. It's so cool how it changes depending on if fighting is occurring.

I used to do PVP, but since Wrath has come out I have totally given up on it. As a prot paladin there really is no reason to. There are no rewards worth getting with honor for me. I have tried Wintergrasp and found it okay, but would rather spend my time doing herioc dungeons or raids. For me PVP is dead right now. Maybe when dual specs come out I might find a use for it, but until then no thanks.
