Shifting Perspectives: The Druid of 2008, part II

Feral has been my usual spec since May 2007 in the interests of never suffering a bad PuG tank who wasn't me. "Hey!" I said. "I can suck at least as well as some of these people!" Subsequently I tanked all the way to Kil'jaeden wondering when any raid pull was going to be as tough as tanking Shattered Halls without CC.
Well, no. Tab-target Lacerate, tab-target Mangle, tab-target Lacerate, Swipe Swipe, tab-target Swipe, Demo Roar, tab-target Mangle -- zomg rage -- Maul Maul -- tab-target Lacerate -- oh f%#*, that f#^#*$ warlock isn't f^%##*@ watching the f#$^&*% threat meter again, Feral Charge, Bash, Growl, /p PLEASE WATCH YOUR THREAT, Mangle, tab-target Lacerate, Swipe, Maul. Ah yes. Those were the good old days. Not really.
After an early 2007 nerf to out-of-control bear damage (which would later resurface as jaw-dropping bear damage in Wrath, where apparently it was fine and dandy), ferals settled into what was typically a 0/47/14 PvE spec, capable of tanking anything in the game and then doing amazing DPS as soon as they switched to cat. At least, that was the story peddled by the other tanking classes, although I assume that they did not dps as Ret or Fury while equipping Slikk's Cloak of Placation and Violet Signet of the Great Protector in order to more closely approximate the feral offtanking experience.Fury of the Sunwell (also known as patch 2.4.0) hit in March 2008 and exposed Tier 6 bear tanks to an amusing new mob buff called Sunwell Radiance, which effectively reduced our dodge by a flat 25%. "Hey, wait a minute," said the bears. "We don't have any other form of avoidance. Isn't that kind of unfair?" "No," said Blizzard. "Yes," said Blizzard (5 months later). "Balancing bears is very tough, especially when they're dressed in those cute little circus clothes and riding a motorcycle on a highwire." Maybe they didn't actually say that; we were all too busy getting pasted by Brutallus to tell. Stack dodge or stam? Ask 5 bears and you'd get 12 different answers.
As for the other half of the feral tree, Cat damage in Tier 4 was pretty damn good, even chart-topping on occasion. Cat damage in Tier 5 was OK. Cat damage in Tier 6 was...ha ha. Little joke there. Cats weren't actually doing any damage in Tier 6 because they were too busy battle-rezzing the idiots who killed themselves overnuking on phase 2 Reliquary of Souls. More seriously, cat damage in Tier 6 was abysmal, and was -- did you see this coming? -- designed to be abysmal. I remember seeing an application to my T6 guild from a T4 feral confidently stating that he was an excellent cat ("but I tank when I have to") and used to "pissing off the rogues with my dps." Come here, small one. We must have a talk, you and I. Do you see that rogue over there? Yes. The elf with the implausibly giant legendary weapons on his back? That one. He's hard to miss.

Never?
Never.
Then again, "never" is such a fluid concept. Blizzard approached Wrath with a few goals for feral in mind:
- Bear AoE threat needed to not suck.
- Cat damage needed to not suck.
- Bear AoE threat sucks less.
- Cat damage sucks much less, to the point of actually qualifying as "great," which would be really happy news for all those of us who are not --
- Competing with Death Knights for melee and tanking drops while occupying the same Vanquisher token. 40% drop rate my ass.
Bear damage has returned to its former "outrageous and unacceptable!" early 2007 levels, but bears doing actual damage is apparently OK now that said damage is necessary to maintain threat over the loldps. Mostly, anyway. Swipe's threat got buffed by 50%, we'll see how that goes on the Skadi event, because right now it's -- Hey, where'd that Frost Vrykul go? Hey! HEY! Get back here! Oh, for the love of Mary, I hate this boss. I'm among the people who thought that Swipe's threat was more or less OK as it was, but mob pathing mechanics and the lack of LOS nooks in Wrath dungeons are a headache. Bears are pretty damn good raid tanks in Wrath from my experience, and -- hallelujah! -- we are no longer required to track down virtually nonexistent +defense in order to tank, but gauntlet-style events in 5-mans are definitely not our strong point. Oh well. Berserk is pretty cool. And now, with our traditionally overpowered soloing capability (a cherished bear right), we can solo heroic Sethekk Halls in the hopes that Anzu can be coaxed into dropping....uh, himself. Good luck with that.
Tauren cat form is still in the game, though. You can't have everything.
Barkeep! More cough syrup. This column's not gonna write itself, you know.

Well said. I am on your side as far as swipe threat. I still cringe being asked to tank H UP and even H HoS due to the events, while my guildies tell me that the problem is my skill "Just spam swipe!" I have to tell them "It's not that easy..." and our AoE taunt CD is 2.5mins with the glyph so it can usually only be used once per encounter. The growl range has helped to some extent though. The mob pathing problems are the biggest problem though IMO, and I don't really see them changing it. I'm still not entirely sure how to use Savage Roar to maximum effectiveness. Do I pop it with 2 combo points so I can get a full 5 faster or wait till 5 and not have to worry about re-popping it for a while. I must say Cat form has been buffed extremely for PvP, I'm having TONS of fun in BGs so far, even with my crafted PvP gear. I'm planning on starting 2s with a rogue even though I previously despised Arena. All and all I'm liking feral in Wrath, and am hesitant to the new changes coming up with armor and FAP. The biggest problem I see is, with dual-specs, we effectively have to choose between 4 specs while all the other classes only have to choose between 3. But I guess that's what we get for picking the original "jack-of-all-trades" class.

Ravage+Mangle should get you 3-4 CPs, pop SR (don't Rake before having SR up, if the openers didn't crit, rather mangle again, it's cheaper, esp. since you'd want to re-apply Rake after having SR anyway), then try to get into a good Rip/SR rotation, with 4-5 CPs for each finisher, losing some seconds to SR rebuff is ok, but of course you can wait for your energy to go up again. Make haste though if both Rake and Rip are running out.
While zerking, forget Rip and use FB to finish, of course while still keeping Mangle (where no Arms Warrior present), Rake and SR up.

Oh and of course Shred is the skill to spam while everything else is up, unless you didn't spec for it (most tank specs won't) then spam Mangle instead.
Fight like Thaddius make this "rotation" even worse, since in addition to the position problems (you can't be behind the mob all the time) you also have to note the bonus damage from the charges, since DoT damage is evaluated when applied, it's not affected by charge stacks gained or lost afterwards.
So, don't Rake/Rip immediately after a charge change, even if yours didn't change, the extra damage won't kick in until after some seconds, watch your debuffs. Rather re-apply shortly before the charge change, if there are only some seconds left from the previous application. Perfect time to Mangle and put SR back up again though.

Thanks for the help! I'm slowly getting it. I don't dps much in instances. When I'm PvPing I usually don't pop SR so I often forget I even have the skill when I rarely DPS :P

I agree with everything you've said - good post.
Besides the armour nerf and the looming prospect of losing 'feral staves', there is only one thing that absolutely and totally drives me nuts with being a feral at the moment - no intellect on any of the feral tier pieces. Blizzards QA department clearly haven't tried fighting a faceroll frost mage where you rely on chain shifting to try and even get close to him. In short, feral tier pieces should have some intellect. =/

Blizz did say there will be a talent change deep in the feral tree to reduce shifting cost by like 80% which should fix powershifting issues

This is probably not the place to put in a request to get people to assess your gear - it's derailing an excellent post/thread.
Having said that you've logged out in tanking and winter feast gear, and where's your Feral Staff with all its glorious FAP? Those weapon changes haven't happened yet, so Thorim's Crusher isn't helping you at all right now.

Thanks DFV I forgot that I logged out on that. Yes it is a great thread no doubt, just trying to get some help thats all.

Can someone link to the "0/47/14 PvE spec capable of tanking anything in the game and then doing amazing DPS as soon as they switched to cat"??
Thanks!

I'm a PvE druid leveling up from 30 and would like some guidance on what talents/spec to use to make a good hybrid feral.
Thanks in advance!

I have been tanking 25 man nax and the ever so easy 25 vaults but can not tank heroics to save my life. I give everyoen the speech about rage and threat. But, I always end up chasing targets around. People die and then tell me to get some gear. I cant help but question my own tanking abilities as my gear is glorious. I would like to see a serrious diminish on my aoe taunt timer. On the pvp side of things- in BC i had a full pvp set and did good. But, things were shady in BGs now with the unholy DK, I kept telling myself "your not geared yet" but...there not geared ether! What is going to happen when i run into a full arena geared DK? I will die and thats it! I must tell you this though, because I stopped pvp and focused on raiding, I am now doing BGs with pve gear and I swear the only thing I notice is the mana drains. It is not uncommon for me to fight 4 to 5 horde at once and live for a long time. If I have a pali healer...forget about it. Like someone said in this thread, we need more mana. like he said, you have to shift to kill a blinking mage that can constantly CC you.

i use a 0/52/19 feral spec http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/druid/talents.html?tal=00000000000000000000000000005032321303220103531203003130100550331200000000000000000
this gives me great threat and great dps in raids and 5 mans. I use a mangle rake mangle till 5 point sr then tigers fury rake mangle till 5 points rip rake mangle till 5 fb, if the rip is still up. Now if u spec into a spread dps spec rip is really not needed cause u are more likey going to put 5 points in rend and tear this gives ur fb a 50% crit chance on a bleeding target (and i know with 25 man gear i have over 50% crit anyways) so just rake then fb should crit for around 10k but always use sr first.
Tanking wise i have no trouble with tanking 5 mans and events are something i did really have trouble with. People are always happy to have a tank push dps (when it is higher that 2 of the 3 dps they better) and with 40+ dodge % unbuffed i have no trouble with even ungeared healers. i hope others read this and hopfully use it to push better dps while still being able to tank well. And please dont think that the tanking gear and dps gear are the same cause u are going to have to use 2 different sets and there is really no way around it if u want both sides of the feral tree.
